To anyone listening closely to what Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been saying over the past couple of years, this week felt like the clearest sign yet that AI is about to fundamentally change the size of Microsoft’s workforce. Microsoft is now offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India. Microsoft now employs around 223,000 people as of June 30th, 5,000 fewer than the 228,000 people it employed in 2025. Xbox hardware and content and services were also down, but a whole third of Microsoft’s revenue came from Azure ($33.17 billion of the $92.3 billion).
Following Fortnite developer and publisher Epic Games' public announcement that it would be undergoing a "huge pivot" for "maximum AI acceleration," one former producer shares his take on the controversial technology and its role in the development process. Aakash Gupta, who worked at Epic as a producer on Fortnite, explains that Tim Sweeney's push for a new "AI first" approach to game dev and how quickly it's moved – just see the now-delayed Disney extraction shooter – isn't surprising. "Fortnite Battle Royale was built in two months," he writes on X. But, "None of that touches the layer Epic controls, because Epic makes the tool everyone builds with." He recalls how Epic "wired" AI models like Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini into its Unreal Engine, with more underway.
"Quite often it's given me more to do" – Why AI might be creating more work for games companies, rather than saving time At the GamesIndustry.biz HR Summit, attendees explained how any efficiency gains from generative AI are countered by employee anxiety, potential data leaks, and legal headaches The GamesIndustry.biz HR Summit took place on October 1, and one topic that came up again and again at sessions throughout the day was generative AI and the impact it's having on the workplace. Attitudes towards the technology were mixed. Some pointed to how AI has been able to speed up some aspects of the game creation process, such as coding, or automate drudge work. But the general view was that generative AI falls far short of the miracle cure that some AI enthusiasts pitch it as, and that in addition it has been causing all sorts of workplace problems as firms figure out how best to use and account for it – including worries about the privacy of sensitive company data, an increase in employee anxiety, and a higher workload for HR professionals as a result of lengthy AI-written grievance letters.
