An 86-year-old Austrian mountaineer has been reunited with his backpack and climbing equipment, 63 years after he abandoned them during a near-fatal fall into a glacier crevasse. The vintage gear had recently resurfaced on a melting glacier in Austria’s Tyrol region. A fall in 1963 that nearly cost him his life On August 4, 1963, the then-23-year-old was hiking with friends near the Sulztalferner glacier when he plunged into a deep ice crevasse. More than six decades later, in July 2026, another hiker spotted the equipment poking out of the melting ice at an altitude of 2,955 meters, roughly 9,700 feet.
