Authorities have arrested a man accused of being the original uploader of pirated content on Nyaa, one of the world’s largest torrent indexes for anime, manga, games, and other Japanese media. The suspect, a resident of Sagamihara City in Kanagawa Prefecture, was arrested on July 28 by Kyoto Prefectural Police on suspicion of uploading NHK drama Midnight Taxi to Nyaa without permission. According to the Japanese anti-piracy group CODA, the man acted as the “first uploader” by publishing the torrent file, which then allowed other users to begin downloading and sharing the drama. The latest wave of anti-piracy crackdowns comes after the Japanese government said it aims to expand the country’s anime and games market by 20 trillion yen by 2033 (around $130 billion USD).
