"Players want to engage with brands, not just consume them" – Mattel on its new Game Studios arm, why it's releasing on Roblox, and what it learnt from NetEase The games industry has seen entertainment giants come and go, but Mattel's Marcus Liassides insists this new games-focused division is here for the long haul In August, Mattel announced it was forming Mattel Game Studios, a new global development organisation with a focus on making games based on its own IP. The venture sits under Mattel Digital Studios, and its creation follows the February announcement that Mattel had acquired 100% of Mattel163, a joint venture that was established by Mattel and Chinese games firm NetEase back in 2018. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Marcus Liassides, SVP and global head of Mattel Digital Studios, says the firm's new Games Studios arm "reflects the evolution" its digital games business has undergone. "Whether it's an existing game like Phase 10, the recently announced self-published titles like Uno Wild and an upcoming Hot Wheels experience, or partnerships on licensed games like Hot Wheels Infinite Rush and Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, we're building a broad portfolio that reflects how people engage with games today.
Consistently haunting me in Control Resonant is an enemy called the Hiss Transporter. Simply put, it’s a demonic-looking bus that hits hard and spawns waves of Hiss Passengers--enemies horrifically fused with bus seats. This recurring miniboss is not only a long slog to fight, but it’s also terrifying. It consists of the front end of a city bus, floating vertically and emanating a threatening red glow.
"It's less risky to be the masters of our own fate" – The AAA developers going indie Veterans from Warner Bros and 2K explain why the low pay and uncertainty of the indie space beats "doomscrolling on LinkedIn" Justin Fischer and Brock Feldman suddenly found themselves out of a job in 2025, when Warner Bros decided to shutter their studio, Player First Games, the developer of Multiversus. The free-to-play fighting game, which featured various Warner Bros characters, had launched in beta in 2022 before going offline around a year later, in preparation for the full launch in May 2024. Warner acquired Player First just after that 1.0 launch – then announced the studio's closure seven months later, after pulling the plug on Multiversus. I can't control what the investment environment looks like, we can't control what the publisher scene looks like, but we can control what we're making, and how we ship it, and how we communicate with an audience." That said, Airlock Games is happy to have conversations with "interesting partners who want to help us on this journey", and the firm raised over $25,000 in a Kickstarter campaign for What the Stars Forgot last year.
Developer Jagex has announced a fourth MMO in the long-running RuneScape franchise, as well as an animated adaptation. At RuneFest in Birmingham, England, Jagex offered a glimpse at this new MMO, which it said was built “for a new generation of players.” It’s still in early development (a release isn't expected for at least a few years), and it doesn’t have an official title (Jagex is going with RS4 as a working title for now), but it will “bring the world of Gielinor to life in Unreal Engine, combining the depth, freedom and community-led spirit that have defined RuneScape for 25 years with the technology and game design possibilities of today.” Jagex currently operates RuneScape itself, Old School RuneScape, and spinoff RuneScape: Dragonwilds. RuneScape has seen a number of major updates tied to sequel names, including a rename to RuneScape 2 in 2004 and RuneScape 3 in 2013. Here’s the official blurb: Additionally, Jagex unveiled plans to expand RuneScape beyond games, partnering with creator and internet phenomenon, Charlie White aka MoistCr1TiKaL as well as acclaimed LA Based production business Lyrical Media, to bring the world, characters and stories of Gielinor to life in a new exciting animated adaption.

After half a decade of job losses, there is no "business as usual" | Opinion Year after year of grinding redundancies represent an immense destruction of talent and experience, and a failure of existing business strategies. Is a different future possible? The past five years of writing about the games business has come with a helping of cognitive dissonance so severe that it often felt like whiplash. Redundancy numbers pull in the headlines, but statements like Asha Sharma's reference to culling 50% of Xbox "vendor spend" get lost in the noise, despite the likelihood that this represents thousands more jobs lost on top of those people being directly made redundant by Microsoft.

BioShock 2 could have had a "Big Sister scare" system that was way ahead of its time, says designer – but he's "finally" using the idea in his new deckbuilder about beating the Devil: "It has added so much life" Eek! BioShock 2's supercharged Big Sister enemies could have been a lot freakier if the shooter's developer 2K had gone with an abandoned concept from designer David Lindsey Pittman. "Way way back in the day on BioShock 2," Pittman writes on Bluesky, "me and [senior designer] Kent Hudson talked about doing a dynamic 'Big Sister scare' system, where we'd spawn the ostensible villain at the edge of your vision any time the game's tempo slowed down." Bioshock 2 released in 2010, the same year as Frictional Games' Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which introduced oppressive stalker monsters that pursue you on sight.
