Cheating in video games has turned into a multi-billon dollar industry, one that has forced franchises like Call of Duty to build entire teams to combat this epidemic. One of the people leading the charge is a man named David Andrews, a former Department of Defense contractor and member of the Air Force who made the leap into the video game industry. He began this career change working at Rockstar Games, helping combat cheating in Grand Theft Auto Online. I love lockpicking minigames, especially when representatively they're as far away from the act of lockpicking as possible. While I admire the elegance of Bethesda's bobby-pin/screwdriver system seen in Fallout 4, I'm much more interested in the weirder solutions like Splinter Cell's baffling pin-flicking system, or Gothic Remake's absurdly elaborate sliding puzzle system. I love how developers have tried so many ways to represent the act of lockpicking, and that despite this nobody has 'solved' the problem of virtual lockpicking yet (though Bethesda has arguably come closest). 14 years on, the creator of DayZ is still searching for a solution to survival gaming's biggest problem: 'I think I am going to die without having solved it' You might think making one of the most influential games of this century would be a source of unending happiness for its creator. But for Dean 'Rocket' Hall, founder of RocketWerkz, the relationship with his most famous creation isn't that simple. I'll be like 'Hey, a lot of our DLC, even on Icarus— which is really good—sometimes we'll only make $100,000 from it. It might have cost us $120,000 to make.
"The Switch 2 came along and all of those problems were solved."
Mortal Shell 2 review - a Soulslike with tempo and verve Ovaly impressed. In the increasingly crowded Soulslike genre, a game's opening minutes need to do a lot of work. The good news for Mortal Shell 2 is its opening is superb, starting as well as it continues, and condensing the magic of its next 30-odd hours into a few minutes with aplomb. There’s something just a little bit different about FromSoftware’s office in Tokyo. Like with any other successful video game studio, there’s extensive security to get in the door, a minimalist lobby with framed posters from the studio’s most recent releases, and a large glass display case filled with statues from ceremonies ranging from the BAFTAs to The Game Awards. But the hallways are painted black, a fitting theme for a developer known for crafting dark, gothic worlds and a hint at what new creations are lurking inside. Sandwiched in between the launches of Dark Souls 3 (2016) and Elden Ring (2022) were a pair of one-off games — a solemn VR story called Déraciné in 2018, and a ninja action game called Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice a year later — that showed the studio expanding its range.

The Witcher 3 developers were so focused on making a realistic environment for players that they accidentally created a morbidly hilarious side effect for the game’s female NPCs. In an interview with Edge Magazine, CD Projekt Red quest designer Philipp Weber opened up about the unintended consequences of this strategy, saying the team was so honed in on creating a believable world that they ended up causing chaos, instead. Weber explained that they wanted to give NPCs authentic behaviors to increase immersion and reward players for exploring the nooks and crannies of The Continent, particularly where small villages in the countryside were concerned. For the 50 sailors at Novigrad harbour, for example, we made 200 possible spots, so even if all 50 were active at the same time, they would have options." The next entry in the Witcher series is currently in development.

Three Epic veterans are building an AI-powered game engine to break the industry's doom cycle Amid mounting discontent with Unity and Unreal, Immens promises lower costs and faster development for small teams Unity and Unreal have dominated the development scene for a long time now, and were used to make roughly 70% of the games released on Steam in 2025. Godot has seen some significant growth in the past few years, and many big companies still favour proprietary engines – like Capcom with its RE Engine – but otherwise, Unity and Unreal have got the game engine market sewn up. Yet Arjan Brussee, Sjoerd De Jong, and Michal Valient, the founders of Immens, think there is room for a new engine on the scene – and room for improvement. The industry veterans' CVs cover an impressive range of big-name companies, including Unreal maker Epic Games, Guerrilla Games, Boss Key, and Apple, and the trio are ready to challenge the industry titans.
Deus Ex creator Warren Spector announces retirement – "it's time to ride off into the sunset" Spector's career spanned over forty years, working on franchises including Thief, Ultima, and Epic Mickey Deus Ex creator Warren Spector has announced his retirement after over forty years in game development. Spector announced his decision on LinkedIn, writing that while he'd been down this road before and then changed his mind, he's pretty certain this time. "The reasons to retire are simple: I'm a month away from my 44th year as a developer," he wrote. I've worked on more digital games than I can remember – 17 full games, I think, and nine or so add-on packs." Spector joined Origin Systems in 1989, where he co-produced Ultima 6 and Wing Commander.

Though, he's not completely closed the door on making a comeback down the line, alluding to three games in particular that he'd still like to make if the right circumstances popped up. Having joined Looking Glass co-founder Paul Neurath at OtherSide Entertainment, the dev consulted on 2018's disappointing Ultima spiritual successor Underworld Ascendant and worked on stealth game Thick As Thieves, the latter drawing mixed reviews when it released earlier this year. Bethesda finally "looking into" patching Oblivion Remastered on PC, PS5 and Xbox amid praise for Switch 2 release "We've heard your feedback asking for an additional patch for Oblivion Remastered". The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered arrived on Switch 2 earlier this week, immediately drawing praise for its well-optimised state. This is actually a bit of a problem - not because of how it runs on Switch 2, but rather because of how it continues to run on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. "The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game has a number of optimisations that we are looking into bringing to other platforms and we will share more when we are able." Indeed, this isn't the first time Bethesda has hinted it's going to return to those versions, telling YouTuber MrMattyPlays last month that some of those Switch 2 optimisations "we hope to bring to console/PC." Whatever Bethesda has in the works for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, hopefully it's significant enough to finally improve their technical state.
Someone hooked an RX 9070 XT up to their Steam Machine and it works surprisingly well, like fitting a V8 engine into your Honda Civic Big GPU, little machine. The RX 9070 XT is one of our favourite graphics cards of this generation, as it delivers a hefty whack of gaming performance that can sometimes edge it ahead of the RTX 5070 Ti. well, I reviewed it and I'd like it a lot more if it was cheaper, put it that way. One redditor may have solved the Steam Machine's performance drawbacks by putting the two bits of AMD-powered hardware together.
Acclaimed photography puzzler sequel Toem 2 gets a release date Say cheese. Toem 2 will release on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, PC, and PS5 on 29th September, 2026. Details about Something We Made's acclaimed photography puzzler sequel are limited, but it looks like players can expect more quirky characters and chill beats as Toem's photographer protagonist sets off on a brand-new adventure about "uncovering hidden details, helping friends along the way, and documenting the world's little wonders". You can check out the latest teaser in the (sadly very brief) video embedded below: The most obvious change this time is its art; the original's stylised blend of 2D elements and simple polygons has had a bit of a glow-up, retaining its black-and-white looks while embracing far more detailed 3D.
