'There is no secret sauce' to a successful live service game according to Overwatch's associate game director, but knowing your audience is a good start "We occupy this really unique spot in the middle." Not many live service games have stood the test of time quite like Overwatch. 10 years in and it's still been able to retain its playerbase, maintain momentum, and even ramp it up. Well, besides having really cute skins and a very enticing game loop, Team 4 figured out exactly where Overwatch needed to stand years ago. Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most highly anticipated game releases this year, or ever. The franchise is known for its massive scope and impressive attention to detail, but how is a game like GTA 6 actually made? In a new interview with Love magazine ( via Kotaku ), Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson said that part of the secret sauce with the GTA franchise is that many of its developers have been working together for a long time and have a "good sense of what they need to do." In terms of actually building the game, Nelson said the process begins by creating assets and systems, and then "roughing in content across all areas of development." More specifically, Nelson said GTA 6 was built through a series of eight-week milestones where select pieces of the game are compiled together. GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Microsoft file patent for a machine learning system that would "train" itself on your playtime to work out when you'll be least annoyed by in-game ads They want to avoid a "negative use experience" Uncle Microsoft's efforts to keep inventing the Torment Nexus proceed apace with a patent application for an in-game advertising system that might use machine learning to read your activities, and work out when you'll be least apoplectic about being suddenly served a giant MacDonalds pop-up. The patent in question, “Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access", was filed in April this year, and published on 3rd September by the United States Patent & Trademark Office. Briefly, it outlines methods for making in-game advertising more bearable by working out where it fits most naturally into the experience, and perhaps giving you some means of "gaming" it. All with a view to surgically isolating the exact frame in which it's least grating to have (e.g.) your Dragon Age: The Veilguard playtime interrupted so that Pharmbio Korea Co Ltd can tantalise you with a $40 discount on colonic irrigation.
Ashly Burch, voice of Horizon's Aloy and star of Mythic Quest, is currently obsessed with Slay the Spire 2 and thinks videogames have too many stoic characters: 'I want more sh*tty little b*tches' Welcome to Disk Cleanup, our regular weekend feature delving into the PCs of PC gaming luminaries. Come back every weekend to read a new interview, digging into the important questions, like "How tidy is your desktop?" and "What game will you never uninstall?" Ashly Burch's first encounter with PC gaming was playing a Donkey Kong knockoff on a PC her mother had bought to practice typing. "It was one of those things where, when you're younger, you find something that expands your concept of what a thing can be." Burch came to the world's attention through the online, gaming-themed sketch show Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin', before making her videogame acting debut as Tiny Tina in Borderlands 2. Since then, Burch's roles have included Chloe in Life is Strange, Parvati Holcomb in The Outer Worlds, and Aloy in Guerrilla Games' Horizon series.

"I'm a massive fan of Aliens, but it is a very different beast": Why Creative Assembly are still ignoring every movie but the original in Alien Isolation 2, despite heading planetside Or, why Alien: Isolation 2 isn't Aliens: Isolation Creative Assembly have themselves a particular constraint when making Alien: Isolation 2. The sequel to their 2014 horror title would only reference their first game and the original 1979 Ridley Scott Alien film. It ignores all the other films that came after. That includes James Cameron's Aliens, the immediate sequel to Scott's film, which, like Alien: Isolation 2, moves the action from a space station to an isolated planetside colony.
It’s been a huge week for trailers, specifically for games (though the entertainment front hardly took the week off). Of course, the big headline from this week is GTA 6. (Did your Netflix break when you tried to log on to watch the Extended Look right when it dropped?) But gamescom has also been busy shelling out one trailer after another since Tuesday’s Opening Night Live. #TheHistoryofConcrete pic.twitter.com/Qp2lDBm8d4 — Magnolia Pictures (@MagnoliaPics) August 27, 2026 Were you a fan of the HBO show How To With John Wilson a couple years back?
Warlock, the next big D&D game after 2023's Baldur's Gate 3, made a big splash at this week's Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, straight-up spoiling RPG nerds with a nearly ten-minute showcase including breathtaking cinematics as well as combat and exploration-focused gameplay. And while there's zero doubt Warlock is a D&D game through and through, featuring an original story pulled from established lore, developer Invoked Studios is very much designing the game as a standalone RPG bearing the developer's unique trademark. "We're working really closely with the TTRPG folks as well as Wizards of the Coast to try and see how we can bring our own secret sauce to the game," Warlock creative director Jeffrey Hattem tells GamesRadar+ during Gamescom 2026. It's not just what you're typically expecting." In the same interview, Hattem made a point to distance Warlock from Baldur's Gate 3 despite calling Larian's award-winning RPG "a great game" and expressing anticipation for Divinity.
"The things that we based our assumptions on have changed fundamentally": Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani on the games industry's rapid transformation The executive says that long development times, the rise of Asian developers, and the advent of new tech like AI make predicting the future hard, but indies are well positioned for success The CEO of Helldivers 2 maker Arrowhead Game Studios, Shams Jorjani, has said that the games industry is in a "transitional phase at the moment". Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at Gamescom, the executive said the strategies that worked for developers and publishers through the 2010s are not "working anymore". [Steam Replay 2025 showed that 44% of user playtime was on titles between one and seven years old] People scream for new games and IPs, but they don't actually buy them. That will allow us to know that we're able to hit that specific group, and we should do this now, early into development rather than waiting two years after getting broad user tests." He concludes: "But it requires you to let go of that old playbook of playing your cards close to the chest for years, and then dazzle and razzle." Slay the Spire 1 and 2 Even though Slay the Spire 2 has usurped its place as the go-to deckbuilding roguelike, there's still plenty of magic in the original Slay the Spire. With a surprise remaster of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North dropping earlier this month and Andy Serkis’ film, Hunt for Gollum, now in production, I’ve had a real desire to jump back into Middle-earth recently. It was a formative fictional world for millions, whether you read J. Tolkien’s classic novels or fell deeply in love with the fantasy universe through Peter Jackson’s masterful film trilogy. But as a lifelong fan of turn-based JRPGs who grew up with classics like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger, there is one LOTR video game in the avalanche of tie-ins that stood out above all others, and despite the hostile nature of this piece’s headline, I have plenty of nice things to say about it: The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age.
