Anderson's Resident Evil hit theaters in 2002, video game movies were largely seen as a niche. Films like Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider had proven that big-screen game adaptations could be successful, but the commercial and critical failure of projects like the 1993 Super Mario Bros.
The Blood of Dawnwalker director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz has told me the game's divisive time mechanic - which gives you a limited amount of time to save your family, and attaches a time-cost to every quest and notable action you do in the game - won't necessarily feature in a sequel.
Unsupervised YouTube advertisements for the Roblox and Minecraft channel racked up enormous fees in just weeks
But, "there are people over there who are not me who take the best care ever of them."
Former Doom: The Dark Ages producer Andrew Willis has shared tuppence on the state of the blockbuster videogame trade, arguing that the biggest companies and most popular series are going through a familiar "cycle" whereby the moneyfolk finally displace the creatives, and start messing games up in the name of short-term returns. He reckons that the likes of Halo are well on their way to becoming "a dried husk of a product that everyone just now associates with like, slop".
Criterion's future is not like its past.
Nintendo has gotten quite good at making open-ended games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild upended the idea of what a Zelda game could be by giving the player free rein to tackle any part of the map, a philosophy iterated upon with Tears of the Kingdom.

Joe Brammer, the CEO of Wardogs developer Bulkhead, has stated that the studio avoids hiring people who aren't willing to crunch. In an interview with The Game Business, Brammer was asked about the studio's approach to crunch. He noted that he values balance, but not in the way people may think. Instead of traditional work weeks, the team will push harder for a handful of months, but then have the opportunity to take their foot off the gas without fear of retaliation.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma herself said in May that lowering the service's price to $23 was simply "a good first step" in improving it, and that Xbox staff would otherwise "have to outwork the problem in front of us in our path to restore durable growth." We know now that Microsoft's plan to "outwork the problem" includes a total of 3,200 layoffs at Xbox and, I guess, opportunistically deciding to publish another Hideo Kojima game. Still, Sharma said as recently as July that "our business today is not healthy," partly because, "To grow, we bet on Game Pass, multi-platform, and a broader portfolio of content." "While those businesses have created meaningful value," Sharma added at the time, "they did not grow at the pace we expected." #217 - Andrew Willis Speaks On ID Software Layoffs, DOOM TDA, Gamepass, Xbox, ID Tech Engine etc.. After The Dark Ages' 2025 launch, IP holder Bethesda was glad to tell fans, "Thank you for making DOOM: The Dark Ages the biggest launch in id's history - 7x faster to 3 million players than DOOM Eternal." But The Game Business reported at the time that a huge chunk of those 3 million players were on Xbox – over two million of them, actually – compared to just half a million fans on PS5.
Steam reverses porn game rating it mistakenly gave to an indie vampire RPG, and despite the stress it was a 'net positive' overall as wishlists on Steam 'basically doubled overnight' It's a happy ending, but Dave Gilbert of Wadjet Eyes Games says this was absolutely not a guerrilla marketing stunt: "I’m not that dumb and I'm not that smart!" It's a sad day for aficionados of undead porn games, but a good one for pretty much everybody else: Valve has rescinded the adults only rating it had applied to the upcoming narrative RPG Nighthawks, meaning it will appear in standard searches on the storefront and won't be blocked from sale in some regions. Katsuhiro Harada, former leader of the Tekken franchise, is finally revealing some details about his next game currently in the works at his independent development house, VS Studio. Harada famously exited Bandai Namco earlier this year, leaving his decades-long post at the company as Tekken’s guiding force to make his own studio. A subsidiary of SNK, VS Studio has been slowly building its ranks over the last few months, snagging several former members of Tekken’s key development staff. And while he’s been pretty quiet about what exactly VS Studio is cooking up, he shed some light on its current projects in a September 2026 interview with VideoGamesChronicle, and it’s tentatively looking like good news for fans of his previous games.
Kurt Kuhlmann became a central figure for The Elder Scrolls in the two decades and change he spent as lore expert and world builder at the studio, and, from where he's standing now, Bethesda owner Xbox's decision to cut veteran devs from the team working on The Elder Scrolls 6 doesn't make a lick of sense. Kuhlmann discusses his experience at Bethesda with FRVR, noting that layoffs didn't happen until after Microsoft acquired the company and Zenimax. He echoes criticism from the Bethesda union, arguing that the layoffs didn't hit the "14 layers of management" decried in Microsoft's plan to streamline Xbox. "They were laying off people that were creating the game." He describes the impacted devs as "very senior and longtime, like, the best people you can imagine." Latest Videos FromGamesRadar+ Devs impacted by layoffs at Bethesda include 27-year veteran Christiane Meister, a core artist for Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4; Ray Lederer, the last Skyrim concept artist still at the studio, and a Bethesda artist of 18 years; and Ben Carnow, whose weapon and creature designs are a fundamental part of Fallout and Elder Scrolls lore.
Sometimes, I simply enjoy reeling people into playing a delightful indie, and Dredge … well, Dredge is one of those times. It’s a fishing game, yes, but it’s one that hides a Lovecraftian selection of horrors beneath the surface of what, at first, seems fairly tame. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnn9BPDE5Zw&pp=ygUOZHJlZGdlIHRyYWlsZXI%3D The more you let your panic rise, the more likely you are to see deadly creatures, like a phantom shark or a giant crab disguised as a shipwreck. Right now, you can get a Steam key for Dredge for just $8.87 / £7.80 at Fanatical .
