It's been another rough year for video games, with countless studio closures, staff layoffs, and projects that barely managed to even get off the ground before they were unceremoniously cut short . This was especially painful for Mass Effect players, who were looking forward to the upcoming Mass Effect 5, which we now know was tentatively titled Mass Effect: Universe. Sims 4 players don't want Project Rene, but they do want either The Sims 5 or a complete, playable version of The Sims 4--ideally one that doesn't require the purchase of $1,600 in DLC packs to feel "finished." Hitting pause on its weird, experimental Sims projects in favor of attempting to preserve The Sims 4 in a stable, playable, "evergreen" state is arguably the best decision EA could make, given the current state of both EA and The Sims franchise. The Sims 4, however, introduced an era of seemingly endless DLC: expansion packs, game packs, stuff packs, kits--there are over 100 of them, ranging in cost from $40 to $5, and totaling around $1,600 if purchased individually outside of sales and bundles.
To anyone listening closely to what Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been saying over the past couple of years, this week felt like the clearest sign yet that AI is about to fundamentally change the size of Microsoft’s workforce. Microsoft is now offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India. Microsoft now employs around 223,000 people as of June 30th, 5,000 fewer than the 228,000 people it employed in 2025. Xbox hardware and content and services were also down, but a whole third of Microsoft’s revenue came from Azure ($33.17 billion of the $92.3 billion).
"We are very eager to learn from the real veterans" – How Tencent's TiMi Studio Group collaborated with Capcom on Monster Hunter Outlanders The development director for the new mobile title, which launches today, explains TiMi's working relationship with Capcom and what's changed in the transition to mobile devices Today marks the release of Monster Hunter Outlanders, a mobile version of Capcom's long-running franchise that has been created by Tencent's TiMi Studio Group. Previously, Niantic brought Monster Hunter to mobile with Monster Hunter Now, but whereas that title was an AR game along similar lines to Niantic's Pokémon Go, TiMi's Monster Hunter Outlanders aims to distil the "full-fat" Monster Hunter experience onto a mobile device. (Interestingly, TiMi has competition from Capcom itself on this front, following the recent surprise announcement that the console game Monster Hunter Rise has now been brought to mobile via Netflix.) GamesIndustry.biz spoke with Bryan Li, the development director for Monster Hunter Outlanders, about the changes needed to make Capcom's game sing on mobile devices, as well as TiMi's working relationship with Capcom. What problems did you have trying to translate the game to mobile?

"AAA publishers are abusing Early Access," RPG dev says, and Steam games like Subnautica 2 and Path of Exile have warped "the landscape and players' expectations" Denis Dyack – founder of Silicon Knights and current CEO of Apocalypse Studios – says that AAA publishers' use of Early Access is shifting player expectations and making it harder for independent teams. Specifically, he cites developers releasing a "polished product" and using the Early Access standing as "a marketing beat," the problem being that the quality of these titles, in turn, will lead gamers "expecting a near-perfect game," which Dyack asserts "defeats the purpose of Early Access, which is a collaborative development process based on player feedback." "AAA publishers are abusing Early Access, skewing player expectations in such a way that it heavily disadvantages smaller independent developers," Dyack continues, citing Subnautica 2 and Path of Exile as examples of titles that used the program "drastically changing the landscape and players' expectations." With Apocalypse Studios' Deadhaus Sonata, he says the team hit "significant barriers to entry" which in turn "significantly reduced" their market impact.
Dawn of War 4 may be the most generous RTS I've played Da boyz are back in DoW. Maybe the best way to understand the kind of game Dawn of War 4 wants to be is through a single button. If you're playing a campaign mission in DoW 4 and you're not really feeling it, or you made a silly mistake right at the end and got summarily wiped by the AI, or maybe you're in a hurry and just really curious about what happens next in the story, you have a quietly revolutionary option to hand: you can just hit the 'skip mission' button, and move on. The mass effect of mass affects. Last week, legendary RPG studio BioWare announced that it was shutting up shop as part of EA's latest round of layoffs . It was one of many studios hit by cuts from the company on the same day, which supposedly wiped out around 400 jobs. One week on, and several current and former EA employees have anonymously spoken to Vertical Slice about their time at the publisher.
Paweł Sasko, who is now working as Cyberpunk 2 associate director, reveals as much in an entry on the studio's official blog, explaining that the developers wanted the connection between all of Cyberpunk's media to feel "consistent" – which, yes, means Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077, as it "has always worked best when you can feel it's one consistent universe, a nexus of stories told from different perspectives." He continues, referencing characters from both the RPG and its animated Netflix series: "V, Johnny, David, Lucy, the characters from our comics and now the new crew from Edgerunners 2 all experience the same world, but they see something different in it. I wanted the game to acknowledge that connection directly." So great, in fact, that it (in the form of update 2.5, of course) would outshine the patch that accompanied the first season of Edgerunners four years back. In Sasko's own words, "I wanted to create an update for the game that will be much more meaningful than the one we created for Edgerunners in 2022." That "one," as he says, was 1.6 – a patch aptly dubbed the Edgerunners Update, adding transmogs, cross-progression, and more. This time around, update 2.5 has brought a new quest to the RPG that acts as a prequel to Edgerunners 2.
Our Verdict Modern Warfare 4 is the bar that this series should regularly aspire to, and a reminder that Call of Duty benefits when it actually tries to change. PC Gamer's got your back There is a new game titled "Call of Duty" every year, but it's not every year that Call of Duty is really back. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is wrapping things up with one last big update that adds in new game plus and a throwback to the original game Plus more besides Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is setting sail for quieter pastures. That's because the game's last big update arrived today, with Ubisoft explaining that there are only plans for quality-of-life updates for the game going forward. "Developers need to treat Early Access like a real launch, because players do" – Early Access games are on the rise, but so are player expectations The studios behind Valheim, Subnautica, Hades, Phasmophobia, Paralives, and Deadhaus Sonata discuss the highs and lows of Early Access The number of games released through Steam's Early Access program has risen significantly in recent years. According to SteamDB, 2,924 Early Access games launched on Valve's platform in 2026 (as of mid-October), an 18% increase from 2025 and a 60% increase from 2020. As a percentage of the overall number of Steam games released each year, Early Access titles are on the rise, going from a 10.4% share in 2024 to 11.3% in 2025 and 13.7% in 2026. Daniel Knight, CEO and game director at Phasmophobia maker Kinetic Games, says that whether Early Access or 1.0, new releases need to be at "a much higher quality." Paralives developer Alex Massé says he ended up delaying the game's Early Access launch from December 2025 to May 2026 after pre-release tests revealed the tutorials and some other features weren't up to scratch.

Kingdom Come, Lord of the Rings studio Warhorse 'hit by a cyberattack' "This is a serious incident for Warhorse Studios and for everyone affected." Warhorse Studios, the developer behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance and an upcoming RPG set in JRR Tolkien's Middle-earth, has announced it's been targeted in a cyberattack, the results and details of which are yet to come out. In a post on X, the studio told followers that "We're sorry to share that Warhorse Studios has been hit by a cyberattack. Thank you for standing with us." In a statement to Czech media, studio CEO Martin Frývaldský said (the following is machine-translated) "This is a serious incident for Warhorse Studios and for everyone affected. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together One of Josh's first memories is of playing Quake 2 on the family computer when he was much too young to be doing that, and he's been irreparably game-brained ever since.
Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive has responded after confirming Chucky would be removed from stores last week, explaining that horror icons will "continue to have an open invitation to join (or rejoin)." There was a bit of confusion amongst fans when the studio behind the hit asymmetrical horror game announced Chucky as the latest icon to leave its roster. Following the removal of Pinhead last year and Michael Myers just months ago, fans were sad to see another Killer exit stores so soon. However, it's ultimately not up to Behaviour when it comes to the date some franchises may depart. In a statement sent to IGN, Behaviour said that, while its "goal is always to keep licenses" in Dead by Daylight forever, that can't always be the case.

Halloween is almost upon us, and if you're looking for some suitably spooky videogame fun then allow me to direct your attention to Playable Archive, a free "micro psychological horror experience" from Darkstone Digital, the solo studio behind The Mortuary Assistant. As you might expect, given the title, Playable Archive bears a number of similarities to PT, the 2014 "playable teaser" for a cancelled game in the Silent Hill series. Immortalizing the project's memory with Playable Archive is my way of doing that while offering something new from me for horror fans this Halloween as I get to work on new projects."
