"A cold dead place that's slowly decaying" - EA employees reveal a culture of secrecy and terrible morale following layoffs
"You're just numbers on a list."
Last week, EA announced it's laying off 400 workers across multiple studios, cancelling projects and refocusing on its biggest money-makers. As part of that, EA closed down the iconic BioWare studio, letting go of most of its remaining staff of around 50 people. The mood inside EA is, unsurprisingly, low. As a result of EA's $55bn acquisition by a consortium of investors - chiefly Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund - EA is saddled with $20bn of debt it has to find ways to recoup.

In the wake of Dragon Age and Mass Effect studio BioWare getting shut down and Mass Effect 5 being canceled, co-founder and former general manager Greg Zeschuk says that most executives behind decisions like this have never actually made games before or "know how it works."
BioWare's closure was shocking news, but sadly, layoffs and disruption at EA weren't unexpected after it was announced that the publisher was going private in a $55 billion acquisition deal from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners, and Silver Lake. In my spare time, you're sure to find me on my Nintendo Switch or PS5 playing through story-driven RPGs like Xenoblade Chronicles and Persona 5 Royal, nuzlocking old Pokemon games, or going for a Victory Royale in Fortnite.
BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has spoken out about the closure of BioWare last week, which saw 50 jobs lost as part of 400 cuts across the company, along with the cancellation of Mass Effect 5, which we've now come to learn (via a leaked internal trailer) was called Mass Effect: Universe. Speaking to 80 Level, Zeschuk lamented the end of the studio but said he went through his own emotional goodbye to the studio after he and fellow co-founder Ray Muzyka departed it on their own terms back in 2012, several months after the launch of Mass Effect 3. We showed you could do something really special in a place that was not known for doing things like that.”
Regarding the Saudi Public Investment Fund's $55 private buyout of EA, Zeschuk said he wasn't surprised that BioWare was ultimately shut down. Meanwhile, composer Austin Wintory revealed he'd been in discussions with EA and BioWare about composing the soundtrack for Mass Effect 5 and was such a fan of the series that he even went so far as to release 22 minutes of Mass Effect music he'd created to help convince the publisher to hire him.

"This company has been driven into a wall for years" - Life is Strange studio Don't Nod faces unrest while teetering on insolvency
"For two years, employees have been living on the edge."
There's deep unrest at French studio Don't Nod - creator of Life is Strange, Remember Me, Vampyr, Banishers: New Eden, and most recently Aphelion - as it scrambles to restructure itself and guard against insolvency. Indeed, an impassioned account of proceedings on French union Le Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo's website (via Rock, Paper, Shotgun) reveals Don't Nod has entered safeguard proceedings - a kind of last-ditch restructuring effort to stave off insolvency. It also reports that even though redundancies are being made,Don't Nod intends to finish making the in-development game codenamed P14, albeit relying more on outsourced development rather than its cut-down in-house team. Over the past couple of weeks, I've been conscious of an eerie background humming and hissing. For a while I thought it was just tinnitus, brought on by one too many listens of Control's Ashtray Maze OST, but then I realised that it was actually RPS regular quasiotter whispering in my ear about Hot Wax, which launches on Steam this week after a spell of Itch.io exclusivity. It's the new arcade puzzler from PUNKCAKE Délicieux, otherwise known for inflicting shotguns on chess and forcing the alphabet to wear trousers in the name of archaeology, somehow. Hot Wax is actually quite straightforward by PUNKCAKE standards.
The mass effect of mass affects. Last week, legendary RPG studio BioWare announced that it was shutting up shop as part of EA's latest round of layoffs . It was one of many studios hit by cuts from the company on the same day, which supposedly wiped out around 400 jobs. One week on, and several current and former EA employees have anonymously spoken to Vertical Slice about their time at the publisher.
First Xbox COO Helen Chiang leaves company after three months in the role
Chiang allegedly "terminated for policy violations," Xbox says it does not "discuss individual personal matters"
Xbox's first COO Helen Chiang has left the company after only three months in the role. In an internal memo circulated on October 23 and obtained by The Verge, Xbox head Asha Sharma stated: "I'm grateful for her years of service and wish her well."
Chiang's role will be split between other Xbox execs until a successor is appointed. According to our sister site Eurogamer, a source alleged that Chiang was "terminated for policy violations." Eurogamer stated it has "not been able to independently verify this claim."
In response, Xbox vice president of communications Kari Perez said: "We don't discuss individual personal matters. We're grateful for Helen's years of service and wish her well."
Chiang was appointed COO in July, coinciding with Xbox's announcement to lay off 3,200 employees and divest five studios as part of a company restructuring.
An October 27 statement from employees of Don't Nod, the developer best known for making the original Life is Strange games, warn that the company is in danger of insolvency and layoffs, and accused its management of "illegal" practices that have caused staff "uncertainty and anxiety."
The damning statement comes from employees who are members of the French game industry union Le Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo, which revealed that Don’t Nod is currently under a safeguard to help protect itself from insolvency (meaning that the company wouldn’t be able to pay its debts). The statement claims employees were approached by management and given “several financial scenarios” that could happen in the near future, both of which “included redundancies," with the worst case forecasting the “liquidation of the company through 2026.”
The message states that “nearly all of the non-managerial jobs” were cut at Don’t Nod, which reportedly included all animators, character artists, concept artists, associate producers, and most environmental artists, sound designers, level designers, programmers, QA testers, HR and developers. Half of its game designers were also laid off, according to the statement. The statement goes on to claim that management is betting on outsourcing to take on the workload of these fired team members — a decision that the union feels is “out-of-touch.”
The letter then says Don't Nod employees have been “living on the edge, in uncertainty and anxiety” for the last two years, to the point where six workplace accidents occurred this year and an inquiry was recently launched into a “serious and immediate danger.” It also alleges that management “refused to let those who would be willing to leave earlier go through a voluntary leave plan,” saying they “do not care about the damage it deals to employees’ health.”
The statement ends on a striking note; a government agency that represents employees is set to make its ruling on November 3.
