A new report has revealed that EA closed BioWare because it was forced to choose between investing in one of two sci-fi projects: a new Mass Effect game or a new Star Wars Battlefront game.
EA's sale to Saudi-led consortium was "final nail in the coffin" for BioWare, says studio co-founder "I'm not saying it doesn't hurt and doesn't suck." One of BioWare's famous doctor-founders, Greg Zeschuk, has finally spoken about the studio's closure last week, saying it's "kind of sad" and that EA's leveraged buyout by a Saudi-involved consortium "was the final nail in the coffin". Speaking to 80 Level, Zeschuk - who founded BioWare in 1995 with fellow medical students Ray Muzyka and Augustine Yip - said he was fishing when news of the studio's closure broke. "I got like 10 texts," Zeschuk said. Earlier this year, I embarked on a pivotal journey, one that I'm sure upon finishing will change me for good: I started watching Haikyu!! It's my first sports anime (when you're a chubby little muffin like I was, you take more interest in Not Moving over Sports), an abscess in the lexicon of genres I've dipped my toes into, one I'm rectifying after all these years. I even, incredibly briefly, floated the idea of taking up volleyball. Yet now I don't have to, and it's all thanks to a delightful, incredibly Wii Sports coded game called just volleyball.
Ever since the Wii was bundled with Wii Sports, we’ve seen Nintendo offer some sort of sports minigame collection alongside the launch of a new console to ensure folks have access to motion control minigames like bowling, boxing, and tennis. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is the logical next step, jumping to 12 minigames from the original five from Wii Sports, and does the usual admirable job of offering an array of activities. (Not to mention guaranteeing we’ll likely see an array of plastic peripherals to clip onto Joy-Con 2 controllers over the next few months and years.) Nintendo Switch Sports Resort builds on Nintendo Switch Sports by taking us to the Spocco Resort, following the original’s Spocco Square sports facility. That, combined with it being one of the “budget” first-party releases at $49.99, makes it feel like it will fill the same hole left by games like Wii Sports and Nintendo Switch Sports.
Wii Sports holds an important place in Nintendo’s history. It’s the best-selling piece of software the company has ever made, one that permeated culture in surprising ways, and its success helped rejuvenate Nintendo after a period of steady decline. While subsequent sports titles from Nintendo never sold quite as well as the original Wii Sports, they’ve become a fixture for each new console, much like a new Mario Kart or Pokémon. The game is coming out during a particularly hectic time for new video game releases, and it’s sandwiched between two flashier Switch 2 titles in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and the upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
I awake, fist contorted into the shape of a Joy-Con 2, with a sharp pain in my right shoulder from a night of strenuous Table Tennis. There must be a new Nintendo Sports game out. Like everyone else in the world, I poured days into Wii Sports back in 2006, and spent an ungodly amount of time taking to the skies of Wuhu Island in its successor, Wii Sports Resort . Perhaps slightly less like everyone else, I also took things far too seriously in the forgotten Wii Sports Club on Wii U, and Nintendo Switch Sports stands as one of my most-played games on the titular hardware.
Howdy folks, and welcome back to another edition of Box Art Brawl ! Before we get cracking this this week's brawl, let's see how things went down last week. We checked out Wii Sports Resort for the, uh, Wii. Europe and Japan comfortably won the vote with a staggering 84% turnout.
Following a wave of projects that have seen developers use AI to rebuild and combine games in unusual ways, Xbox has created a new team to explore the technology. A new trend has emerged where modders find ways to combine completely different games and make older titles run on platforms they were never designed for. Rather than simply adding new maps or characters, these projects involve rebuilding or modifying the code of existing games. Call of Duty, in particular, has been focused on as fans managed to bring Minecraft and Skate 2 into Modern Warfare 2.
Welcome to this week's edition of Box Art Brawl ! Last time, we matched up a trio of covers for the GBA's Zone Of The Enders: The Fist Of Mars , though it wasn't a particularly close-fought contest. The Japanese variant walked away with 54% of the vote and the win, leaving the European and North American designs with 29% and 17% respectively. Read the full article on nintendolife.com

In an new episode of their podcast, former PR leads Krysta Yang and Kit Ellis discuss as much, with the latter saying "Nintendo should be even more focused on remakes." He cites Star Fox and Ocarina of Time's 2026 returns as "really proving that there is a significant audience" and "significant interest when these games are handled in a premium way." Ellis also notes "if you're Nintendo, nobody has a library that's as deep as you" while stating that the original Switch lineup was bolstered by a plethora of Wii U ports throughout its life. We can supplement that with these remakes." The Nintendo Takes We Refuse to Back Down On - EP244 Kit & Krysta Podcast - YouTube Granted, Ellis does say "you need to be careful" when it comes to what the percent of remakes vs original titles is in a given year, as to not be seen as relying on remakes and remasters.

A Call of Duty fan has managed to get the source code for World at War Zombies and has been posting bizarre creations online, including crossovers with NHL and Halo. Cooper’ revealed that he “had opus 5.5 and astra pull the source code for call of duty world at war and port the classic og zombies map over to web.” This allowed them to run the classic mode from their own browser. Clearly, it also opened the door for them to get creative, as they soon started posting clips of increasingly strange additions to Zombies. Nintendo announced two new post-price hike Switch 2 bundles last month, and while the Mario Kart version is still but a promise (even though it's technically supposed to hit shelves earlier), the Sports Resort package is now available for pre-order. The $529.99 (Nintendo) bundle sits about $30 higher than we've typically seen from Ninty's package deals. Before September 1's price hike you'd be paying $499 for a game and handheld in one box. These days, though, $529.99 actually represents one of the better discounts on the web.

Both of Nintendo's Switch consoles have been cursed with deafening silence in their menus and eShops. But the latest version 23.0.0 update for the Switch 2 at least injects a little bit of personality and nostalgia into one of the platform's menus, bringing back music for the Mii Maker. When you create a Mii in the Switch 2's system settings, the familiar Mii Channel music from the Wii now plays in the background. A music settings button on the top left also lets you change the track to the 3DS or Wii U Mii Maker music (the tracks are generically named "Track 1," Track 2," and "Track 3").
Nintendo Direct has officially announced the release date of a brand new Nintendo Sports, and this time it’s going to be fully open-world, with exciting activities. Nothing says Nintendo like a good sports game, whether you grew up playing Wii Sports on the older console or tried your hand at a good bit of basketball on Nintendo Switch Sports that released back in 2022. No, it's the children who are wrong: The Wii and PS3 are 'retro' now, according to iconic Japanese gaming show 80% of nearly 17,000 viewers agree: Wii Sports is even more of a grandpa game in 2026 than it was two decades prior. Retro gaming is just regular gaming to a sick, twisted mind like mine (and that of everyone I know, since we spend all our time playing old crap). The poll reportedly got over 14,000 responses with 71% voting in favor, and when a second round followed, that percentage rose to 80% among nearly 17,000 voters. Well, we have a retro gaming scene too, and if we agree for the sake of argument that those consoles are retro on the basis that they're turning 20 this year, that would mean the following PC games are also retro: Medieval II: Total War, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Dawn of War - Dark Crusade, Neverwinter Nights 2, the first season of Telltale's Sam & Max reboot, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and perhaps most upsettingly, Company of Heroes.
Duskfade is a new indie love letter to some classic PS2 action platformers, Kingdom Hearts included. And, now, a Kingdom Hearts modder had made the Kingdom Hearts-like even more like Kingdom Hearts. The developers of Duskfade have been pretty open about their inspirations in the past. Duskfade itself is pretty great with or without the mods - on Steam, the game has an 89% 'Very Positive' rating.
