The top 10 scariest RPGs I've ever played—and one I'm too afraid to try
Cozy life-sim games where you get to retreat to a rustic village for a relaxing, self-sufficient life on a farmstead are hardly in short supply--and, with so many stellar entries in this genre out there, a game following this formula needs a really good hook to stand out. Village in the Shade , a new release from NIS America on Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC, certainly looks the part of a cheerful, cozy farming game. But, as the phrase goes, looks can be deceiving--and, in this case, that deception runs deep. You can tell something is off right from the tutorial, which sees you chasing after an escaped chicken, only to discover something rather distressing.
Pack a spare pair of underpants. It's that time of year again, and the perfect opportunity to REvisit and REfresh our horror list - now including Switch 2 games. Are you troubled by strange noises in the middle of the night? Do you experience feelings of dread in your basement or attic?

Modern Warfare 4 arrives at a strange time for the Call of Duty series. Despite being a solid multiplayer shooter, 2025’s Black Ops 7 became the franchise’s lowest-selling game since 2008’s World at War in the US. Activision itself recently admitted that following up 2024’s Black Ops 6 with another Black Ops, after doing the same with Modern Warfare 2 and 3, didn’t offer the variety that fans wanted. Verdict Modern Warfare 4 stands alongside Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare 2 (2009) as one of the most complete Call of Duty titles to date.

It gives me great nerdly joy that the Next Fest demo on Steam's 100 most-played games list is a shopkeeping sim (Don't worry, you don't need to be a sim geek to dig it.) As the sicko cartoon goes: "YES… HA HA HA… YES!" That's how I feel while peering at Steam's 100 most-played games list and spotting the Next Fest demo for shopkeeping sim Probably Stolen. A singleplayer game about sitting behind a desk and managing inventory doing that well among the other 8,000+ demos that have arrived for Next Fest? So well it's actually charting with 34,230 concurrent players? I played the demo back in September and loved it because it made me feel like I was running a corner store in Dredd or Cyberpunk 2077.
When I first saw Welcome to Elderfield, I didn’t register that this farming sim is actually an RPG Maker MZ game. Instead, I got lured in by the promise of another unconventional take on the genre that injected some horror into the concept. Only after I saw the combat did it click. While some of the limitations and grinding elements do come up almost immediately, I appreciated Chris Cote’s commitment to a “dark” farming sim and RPG.
What we've been playing - "I simply didn't know if a first-person shooter could work as a Soulslike" A few of the things that have us hooked this week. 17th October Hello and welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little about the games we've been playing. This week, Connor plays a classic, and ticks it off his bucket list; Sherif isn't sure about a first-person shooter foray into Soulslikes; Matt visits a South Pacific island volcano and Jim Henson's Labyrinth, all in one game; and Bertie discovers that playing D&D with kids is enormously entertaining. There's a little bit of everything across its main courses and dirt-cheap DLC: holes situated around 1950s-style Hollywood movie lots; courses inspired by Atlantis, Jules Verne, and Mount Olympus and its incumbent Greek Gods; matches winding precariously up and down red rock mesas, and even jaunts though Jim Henson's Labyrinth.
My 2012 belonged to Slender Man. I was easily terrified by creepy, early 2010s computer games like Slender: The Eight Pages, but I couldn't resist their special blend of unicorn blood and twee. Recently, I've been missing the pink bittersweetness of the Tim Burton-style horror games made in those years, like Fran Bow and Alice: Madness Returns , so the inaugural Cozy After Dark Showcase has arrived with a new trailer for Hell Is Other People at just the right time. The teaser from indie developer Miss Self Destruct describes Hell Is Other People--named for the famous Jean-Paul Sartre quote about being trapped in other people's perceptions of you--as "a psychological horror about social anxiety." Its little girl protagonist has onyx eyes and hair that goes nearly down to her fingertips, so she looks a bit overgrown, like she might have washed up on some riverbank.
Wizards of the Coast just announced Magic: The Gathering Darkhold Destiny, its latest Marvel set in a New York Comic Con panel. This is the third Marvel collaboration for the card game, but where the first two were about presenting super heroes as they already exist in Marvel canon, Wizards of the Coast was able to cook up its own storyline for Darkhold Destiny. The set revolves around the likes of Doctor Strange, Thor and Ghost Rider, all trying to work against Hela and Dormammu invading the multiverse. 8:19 pm: For the product suite, we have Booster Packs, Collector Boosters, Prerelease Pack and Draft Night (which also has a Collector Booster).

After trading space babies and running people over with a truck, Strange Scaffold want you to organise a haunted library in Something is Wrong with the Library Its gentrification, the something is gentrification "At the time, I didn't immediately think my boss was filling the walls of our place of business with corpses," so opens the reveal trailer for Something is Wrong with the Library, the latest game from the studio that is most hard to pin down genre-wise, Strange Scaffold. Though, considering they've made games about isekaing people, trading space babies on the stock market, and cuck-, I mean, Clickolding, perhaps the way you pin them down is "games for freaks and weirdos." In Something is Wrong with the Library, the thing that is wrong with the library is gentrification. Here's the set up for the game: a billionaire came in and "revitalized your small mountain town," by introducing fiber internet, landscaping, by making it a tech-hub, the usual kind of thing. 📚 Organize the Alex Dieter Public Library and Center for Reflection 💀 Dead people are stuffed in the walls 😨 It is extremely haunted 🌊 The Drowning Room Wishlist now.

Roman Sands RE:Build review: A unique and obliterating blend of resort sim, engineering horror and alchemic ritual Check out anytime you like I completed Roman Sands RE:Build late last night, and haven't had nearly enough time to digest it, but I'm keen to help get the word out and energise whatever algorithmic chicanery might contribute to this gorgeous, ugly thing making money. Roman Sands RE:Build is two exquisitely grim games locked in a collapsing binary orbit. You should play it, preferably before reading the rest of this review, which is only going to spoil and dilute its squalid magic. Each of those component games is a short masterpiece, executed with huge prowess at every level of the art, sound, design and writing.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is overhauling the Wanted and police response systems in an interesting way. If you've played Grand Theft Auto games before, you'll know that if you do something illegal, the police will show up. You'll get a wanted level represented by stars--the more stars you have, the more aggressive the police, or even the military, will be. In order to get out of the situation, you evade the police.
