GTA 3's iconic box art was changed at the last minute because of 9/11, ex-Rockstar lead Dan Houser reveals: "He did that in about two evenings" "He did that in about two evenings." Dan Houser, one of Rockstar's co-founders that left the GTA 6 studio in 2020, has given a wide-ranging new interview with IGN, covering topics including the tortured production of Bully, changes made to Grand Theft Auto 3's artwork post-9/11, the reaction to Red Dead Redemption's ending, and why he thinks Max Payne 3 was a failure. The most interesting to me is how the iconic boxart for GTA 3 - a template that has been used for every game since, by the way, most recently being co-opted for GTA 6's cover - was actually put together very last minute. "What's funny is the cover art that became the iconic GTA cover art; Stephen Bliss did that in about two evenings because the old cover art was probably being too offensive to release after 9/11 because there were burning buildings in it," Houser revealed to IGN. So that look of the shards, the squares that became very iconic, only appeared because of 9/11." GTA 3 takes place in Liberty City - a thinly-veiled parody of the real-world New York City, where the 9/11 disaster, of course, took place.
A developer has transformed the classic Windows game Minesweeper into a free browser game that pokes fun at modern gaming’s trend of hand-holding players. Created by Mike Lacher, Triple-A Minesweeper takes the iconic puzzle game and fills it with unnecessary features, including chatty characters, objective markers, and a health system that makes losing considerably harder, if not impossible. Triple-A Minesweeper makes fun of modern gaming Rather than simply clicking squares and avoiding mines, players are treated to a dramatic introduction and a constant stream of instructions explaining what they should be doing. Yellow markers highlight where to click, while characters interrupt the action with dialogue and commentary.

The world is a complicated place, but, regardless of political leanings, I think we can all agree that in 2016 I was much younger than I am in 2026. The younger me was a much more patient person, especially when it came to playing video games. I relished the opportunity to go on whatever ride designers and developers had spent years meticulously crafting. These days, however, I find myself frantically looking for the shortest and quickest path to satisfaction.

Power Lines in Control Resonant is a quest wherein Dylan has to solve exactly that: rerouting three sets of Power Lines in the Perimeter Station, the Factory Station, and the East Park Station in order to supply the FBC with enough energy for a project that they're working on. How to solve the Power Lines puzzles in Control Resonant The general solution for every one of the Power Lines puzzles in Control Resonant is to place "Calibration Units" at specific locations, then activate the large machine referred to as the "Tuning Device", as explained by the "Calibration Instructions" document that appears at all three locations.
The Industrial Revolution is the reason RPGs have area-of-effect spells: A PC Gamer Causality Chain™ Spl-ASH damage. Causality Chain is a series at PC Gamer exploring the unlikely links between history, culture, and videogames. Every time you cast a meteor spell in Diablo 2 or a cloud of daggers in Baldur's Gate 3, you are taking part in a chain of history—a causality chain, if you will—that dates back to the 18th century, when nobody had thought about taking a "warlock dip" since the Salem witch trials. Reforj developer 4J Studios unveils Rixels: modified pixels that reduce texture memory requirements by 98% The studio has applied for a patent on the technology, which uses vector shapes instead of normal texturing Reforj developer 4J Studios has debuted a technology called Rixels that offer an alternative way to provide textures using a fraction of the memory requirements. The Dundee-based studio has applied to patent the technology. "We were using 512x512 normal textures, so a pixel grid with square pixels in it, but as [the game] got bigger and bigger and bigger, we realised that we were going to run ourselves into a wall with space." Van der Kuyl challenged CTO Richard Reavy to come up with a solution, and Reavy designed Rixels, which each contain one of 23 vector shapes. But with Rixels, the same sized grid can be made from 20x20 squares, using only 72KB of memory – a reduction of over 98%.
Club Soko is cartoonishly dark and splattered with beer - and it's a wonderful puzzler, too All eyes on us. Sokoban games are those puzzlers that are all about pushing blocks around. They're spatial challenges at their most fiendish. I gather that the original Sokoban took place in a warehouse, and you were shifting crates back and forth.
With its wild and loopy gameplay and serious sense of humor, Blood Bowl remains one of Warhammer’s most enduring sub-lines. Set in the Old World, Blood Bowl takes your favorite Warhammer characters and sets them against each other… in a match of American Football? Though the game’s wild fun, it can sometimes run long… but Games Workshop is out to fix that with Blood Bowl Sevens, a new faster, more compact version of the game. Normally, you can build a team using 1,000,000 gold pieces, but with Sevens you only have 600,000 gold pieces to work with.
