AI fan wikis riddled with errors are muddying the waters of an already contested part of games culture "These tools have made it very easy for bad actors to crowd out good information..." Recently, I was writing a piece about Nighthawks and wanted to remind myself of some basic information about the companion characters. As I have a thousand times before, I put the question into Google and clicked the first result: the Nighthawks Wiki. Of course, wikis aren't necessarily reliable, especially fan-run projects that might not have enough engaged individuals to immediately spot and fix errors. "Many people chipping in a small bit, and feeling a sense of shared ownership." Riot resurrected 3 of its biggest League of Legends pop groups, but only one emerged victorious I think I could guess where the budget went, but I'm not complaining. Welcome to Critical Hit, where I (or someone else on the PC Gamer team) celebrate and lament all things videogame music, audio design, and the ways our favourite games make our ears tingle. Despite my experience with League of Legends (the videogame) being incredibly minimal, I've spent years in admiration and awe at League of Legends (the music). Some might argue (it's me, I'm some) that Riot Music found the height of its success towards the end of the 2010s with the likes of K-pop girl group K/DA's Pop/Stars and hip-hop group True Damage and their song Giants.
Demystifying unions: What games leaders need to know We collect insights shared by union representatives at this month's GamesIndustry.biz HR Summit If you run a video games company, working with unions is rapidly becoming an inevitability rather than a possibility. This is especially true in the UK, where October 30 will see the first waves of changes to the Employment Rights Act implemented – including a mandatory requirement to allow unions access to your workplace in some form. For some leaders, this may seem somewhat daunting, but a panel discussion on unions at the GamesIndustry.biz HR Summit earlier this month shed some light on the realities of working with such organisations. But while union representatives emphasise that employers need to make sure they understand changes to the UK's Employment Rights Act – both those planned for October 30 and then others for January 2027 – these changes are nothing to fear.
A free Pokemon fan game called PokeBonk brings Megabonk-style horde survival to Kanto, letting players battle wild Pokemon, collect upgrades, and evolve their partners directly in a browser. Megabonk’s survival formula revolves around fighting waves of enemies, collecting experience, and choosing upgrades that make your character increasingly powerful. PokeBonk adapts that approach into a 3D Pokemon game built around the original region’s creatures. Creator Charcher introduced the project on October 14, explaining in Spanish that it draws heavily from Megabonk’s world mechanics, particularly its use of vertical space, while incorporating familiar Pokemon systems.

How former Burnout devs came full circle for Star Wars: Galactic Racer to bring the edge back into racing games: "'Arcade' is not the absence of depth" From the moment developer Fuse Games was founded in January 2023, the intent for the studio was to make a Star Wars racing game. As a studio founded by former Criterion Games developers (Criterion Games previously helmed the Burnout series and later worked on EA's 2015 Star Wars Battlefront and its sequel), fusing the team's arcade racing pedigree and previous experience working on Star Wars titles, as Fuse's creative director Kieran Crimmins says, was "a no-brainer").
The happiest man in gaming hates generative AI Dwarf Fortress creator Tarn Adams on bloated AI code, vampire computers, and surviving on Steam It's impossible to not be swept up in Tarn Adams' enthusiasm. To speak to him is to feel like you're talking to the happiest man in gaming. Along with his brother Zach, he's been working on the wonderfully chaotic procedurally generated world of Dwarf Fortress since 2002, and he is far from tired of it. "We're priced at US$30 and that means less and less now," says Adams.

Post-Xbox, Double Fine boss Tim Schafer is baffled by the terrible state of the game industry: "People are making money, so I don't know why there's a big loss of jobs" Following years of games industry woes and multiple waves of layoffs out of Microsoft, Tim Schafer – founder of the formerly Xbox-owned studio Double Fine – says he doesn't understand the economics of the industry anymore.
"They've watched so many people lose their jobs, that has an impact" – Managing morale in the wake of layoffs HR experts discuss how to care for staff, and for themselves, as widespread layoffs and closures continue in the games industry With tens of thousands of jobs lost across industry in the past few years, to say this is a demoralising time to be working in video games would be something of an understatement. It's impossible to truly calculate how many lives have been affected by the studio closures and waves of layoffs we've seen, which have an impact not only on those who have lost their livelihood, but also on those who remain employed. Much of the burden for handling both redundancies and staff morale during such situations falls to HR departments – something we will be discussing at the GamesIndustry.biz HR Summit on Thursday, October 1. Emma Smith, who spent 15 years handling HR at Creative Assembly before forming her own consultancy Hestia Talent Partners, suggests that not enough attention is being paid to those whose jobs have (for now) remained safe.

The new military shooter hotness is here in the form of Wardogs, from developer Bulkhead. Playing similarly to a popular Arma 3 mod, it puts an intense spin on King of the Hill, and after several successful betas, it has just entered early access. I wouldn't advise jumping in right now, though, because there's a substantial queue. Joe Brammer, the CEO of Bulkhead, posted on Twitter yesterday that over 135,000 players had been let into the FPS thus far.
Marvel's Wolverine | Critical consensus Critics agree that the characters of Marvel's Wolverine are its "stronget asset," but that doesn't outweigh issues with repetitive combat and dated gameplay mechanics Insomniac Games' take on Wolverine has had an eventful route to market. Announced in 2021, Marvel's Wolverine was among several Insomniac titles affected by a 2023 data breach involving 1.67 TB of internal information. Three years later, it launches as a first-party Playstation exclusive following a run of controversial decisions by the company, including the discontinuation of physical disc production in 2018 and the company's separation from Hideo Kojima and the Physint project. Stuart compared it unfavourably to Insomniac's Spider-Man games, noting that "the character's grace, his web-throwing, the three-dimensional nature of his movement, all encourage you to fight beautifully; here I was reminded of 80s beat-'em-ups, or PS3 brawlers – a bludgeoning production line of identical fights against increasingly over-familiar enemy types." Eurogamer's Chris Tapsell, who also rated the game 3/5, said the overall gameplay had "little to no invention throughout," but it was most noticeable in the combat, "which really has to be the backbone of a linear action game like this, let alone a Wolverine one." "There's all the inherent satisfaction of a good parry-counter, of leaping around fully in character as this unleashed beast, of enacting righteous vengeance on your foes.
Cheating in video games has turned into a multi-billon dollar industry, one that has forced franchises like Call of Duty to build entire teams to combat this epidemic. One of the people leading the charge is a man named David Andrews, a former Department of Defense contractor and member of the Air Force who made the leap into the video game industry. He began this career change working at Rockstar Games, helping combat cheating in Grand Theft Auto Online. Former Call of Duty pro and legend FormaL got permanently banned in the Modern Warfare 4 beta live on stream 💀 The Oris is so good it’s got pros getting their accounts flagged 🤣 pic.twitter.com/8MlHBfbH3G David Andrews: So, the thing I'll say for that one is I think, obviously, we replied to that particular instance, but he certainly wasn't the only person that was caught up in that slight error there.
People have been inflicting the cruel colors and harsh lines of Nvidia's DLSS 5 on games that were normal before they were forced to look like AI-enhanced Love Island, and Hello Games' stylized space explorer No Man's Sky is the latest victim. A popular fanmade clip showing No Man's Sky looking more unnaturally crisp than a hangnail reveals plenty of people actually want DLSS 5 – but that developer Hello Games probably won't give it to them. The original post from Twitch streamer Oskar1up has over 6,000 likes and 1.8 million views on Twitter as comments commend the dramatic peach sunset and glassy ocean waves DLSS 5 gives the otherwise subtly beautiful game from 2016. Another Twitter user says of Oskar1up's DLSS 5 experiment, "No Man's Sky is like the perfect game for DLSS 5, no human faces so no weird uncanny valley, and tons of natural and space scenes can use the realism boost." But Griffiths doesn't seem convinced by this claim that DLSS 5 has no downsides when applied to environments.
Fear not, Control fans: Control Resonant will be packed with lore despite the combat-heavy trailers we've seen so far, according to developer Remedy. The lack of focus on story in promotional footage, says Remedy senior communications manager Miika Huttunen, is no reflection of the game's content, but instead a deliberate decision by the team to have the narrative side of the game on lockdown until release. In short: You'll get your fill, you just have to wait. The sneak peeks we've had of the game so far have been mainly combat-focused, a result of combat being something that doesn't need to be revealed gradually to the player.
Maria Redin of mobile giant MTG on rebranding, buying Raid: Shadow Legends, and plans to double the company's size The president and CEO on plans for growth – and why new games remain important even as evergreen mobile titles dominate In February last year, the Swedish mobile giant MTG (Modern Times Group) acquired Plarium, maker of the hugely successful hero collecting game Raid: Shadow Legends, for a cool $620 million. A fresh look MTG was already home to numerous mobile studios before the Plarium purchase, including InnoGames (maker of Forge of Empires), Snowprint (Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus), Hutch (F1 Clash), Ninja Kiwi (Bloons TD 6), and Futureplay (Merge Gardens). Supercell head Ilkka Paananen has warned that the western mobile industry is "coasting", with only two of the 22 new mobile titles that have made over $1 billion since 2020 coming from the west. And if you want to grow above and beyond that, you need to continue to invest in your strong evergreen IPs, but then you also need to be able to bring new games to the market." We also steer clear from games that have yet to drop below $30, hence why you won't see Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, or Fire Emblem: Three Houses on here, for example. -- Jessica Cogswell The Sims 4 Sure, it'll cost you around $1,200 to buy all of The Sims 4's numerous pieces of DLC, but you might be surprised to know that The Sims 4 itself is available for the low, low cost of… nothing! -- Jessica Cogswell The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition You've probably been told a million times that you should play The Witcher 3, but let's go ahead and make that a million and one, just for good measure: You should play The Witcher 3. More specifically, you should play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition, as it includes all of the game's existing DLC and regularly goes on sale for $10 .
