BioWare's incredible legacy will continue as long as there are RPGs EA is shutting down the venerable studio, but its impact will persevere. For my column this week I was going to write about climbing all over monsters in Dragon Dogma 2's chilly Dark Arisen expansion, but then EA decided to finally murder BioWare after years of slowly poisoning it. So sadly I am pivoting to this eulogy. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Fraser is the UK online editor and has actually met The Internet in person.
Fuse Games understood the assignment with Star Wars: Galactic Racer. It’s not a sequel to LucasArts’ beloved Episode I: Racer in any official capacity, but in essence, that’s exactly what this return to space racing in a galaxy far, far away serves up. More than 25 years later, Galactic Racer sends podracing into modern gaming at blistering speed, joined by a trio of speeders for would-be galactic grease monkeys to tweak and customize through its Galactic Tour campaign mode. For example, it might harness tiny OLED displays that look absolutely breathtaking, but the flipside is an equally breathtaking price tag of $2,000 / £1,542 for the headset on its own. If you want the privilege of controllers bundled in and inside-out tracking, it'll set you back $2,299 / £1,774. That's the one that will set you back $2,000 / £1,542. I think when it works, the Pimax Dream Air is VR at its very best, but I'm not sure the leap is good enough to warrant the massive price jump over the other headsets that manage to do things really well for under $500, under $700, or even $1,000.
Saber Interactive's Tim Willits on generative AI, moving development out of North America, and embracing recognisable IP "Sometimes I play these games and I can just see the wasted money" Saber Interactive has achieved a lot in the past few years, but the most noticeable recent news to come out of the the company was CEO Matthew Karch's unfiltered response to accusations that a writer had been replaced with ChatGPT. When we sit down at Gamescom for the second of two conversations with Saber Interactive's chief creative officer Tim Willits, it's the first thing we ask about. It remains a huge company, numbering 3,500 employees spread across 15 studios in places like Serbia, Armenia, Georgia, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Argentina, and Australia. If it takes [a big studio] five years to make a game, that's 60 months, that's $120 million just in salaries." Adding on things like marketing and publishing costs can easily push that up to $150 million, he says, while each game sold might only return around $25 after various deductions.

Peak studio Aggro Crab is publishing a sick-looking platformer about a blue collar guy doing dirty work on an alien world That's what's up. At the Game Developers Conference earlier this year, Aggro Crab developer Nick Kaman told me that he thinks there's a lot of meat left on the bone when it comes to co-op "friendslop" games, and that he wants to keep working in the space. Aggro Crab is still down to zig and not zag, though, and will be publishing and supporting a very different sort of game, the upcoming platformer Rebounder. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Ted has been thinking about PC games and bothering anyone who would listen with his thoughts on them ever since he booted up his sister's copy of Neverwinter Nights on the family computer.

Double Fine's famous game jam returns with 26 new ideas and a promise to make Brutal Legend 2, if its Kickstarter stretch goal is met The Amnesia Fortnight Kickstarter blew past its goal in just two days, but getting a new Brutal Legend is going to be a whole different pile of money One happy upside to Double Fine's newly-regained independence is the return of Amnesia Fortnight, the semi-regular in-house game jam in which everyone stops what they're doing and spends two weeks pitching and developing prototypes for new games. The 2026 edition of the event—seemingly the first since Microsoft acquired Double Fine in 2019—launched a Kickstarter campaign on August 31, and its $400,000 goal has already been surpassed. At the $15 tier, for instance, your vote only counts for half, but at $30 you get a full vote—and if you go up to $60, your vote is doubled—a single vote cast counts for two! No, not really: Never say never and all that, but Shenmue 3 was (and as far as I know still is) the most-funded videogame project in Kickstarter history, and it finished with $6.3 million.

The Epic Games Launcher will be available on Linux 'soon' says dev, after it's had a bit of work Another year of Linux PC gaming, perhaps? Linux gaming has been rumbling along in the background for some time. However, this seems to be the year it reaches a wider audience, as proper Linux support has become a much-requested feature for many platforms. Next up is the Epic Games Store/Launcher, it seems, as an Epic dev has responded to a user query about Linux support with an emoji saying "soon." The conversation was spotted (and indeed, screenshotted) by Mr_Madafaka on Reddit.

Our main character is called Hawks, explicitly as an homage to Howard Hawks, who's the director of movies like His Girl Friday or Only Angels Have Wings." The latter, about a group of pilots in the 1930s, is a major touchstone for Zero Company, which focuses on a mercenary strike force during the Clone Wars who put aside their ideological differences to shoot people for money. "We hope that's recognized by the audience and see that we're trying to honor this great legacy of the genre of strategy games while picking our battles about where we must step up." Star Wars Zero Company is out on PS5, Xbox Series X and PC on August 27, 2026.

Here in the UK, the figures launched exclusively as a £49.99 (Nintendo) triple pack, which was a bummer as it meant my Splatoon Raiders expenses for July almost reached the £100 mark as I grabbed the new game too. At least in the US, you can grab each of them separately for $24.99 (Nintendo) so you can space out your Splatoon budget more than I could.
There's a reason Nintendo keeps remaking Star Fox 64. The N64 iteration of the rail shooter--at the time, the second Star Fox release--remains the apex of the franchise: a genuinely fantastic game that still holds up and stands the test of time. Subsequent sequels that have attempted to recapture the magic have floundered by comparison. This latest iteration, simply titled "Star Fox" for what I can only assume is meant to be a soft reboot, plays just as great as you remember and looks even better.
