The morning of September 10, our Marvel's Wolverine review arrived alongside everyone else's to utter a collective, "Eh." Marvel's Wolverine is not awful, my coworkers tell me (and Metacritic agrees), but it is the worst-reviewed Insomniac game in a decade, and it is not the smash-hit that the PS5 needed. Saros was good and Ghost of Yotei was great, but in Sony's self-imposed game famine, Marvel's Wolverine was left to carry the weight of Atlas as fans pray that God of War Laufey and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet eventually stick the landing.
The Marvel's Wolverine Metacritic scores are in and they're… OK. Insomniac's latest superhero adventure has solid combat foundations and good performances from its lead characters, but its story never ultimately coheres, the fighting peaks way too early, and it's extremely limited in scope compared to modern first-party PlayStation games. At least, that's my feeling after finishing a pre-release version of the game. In our full Marvel's Wolverine review, Leon writes that "Marvel's Wolverine is never a bad experience, just an underwhelming one full of odd choices.
A few hours into Wolverine I found myself asking, “Why did Insomniac Games make this?” There are obvious answers, of course: It has three excellent Spider-Man games under its belt; it's an opportunity to expand its Marvel Universe; and Wolverine presents ample opportunities for a brutal and bloody action game. But none of that explains why Insomniac Games , specifically, made Wolverine. Spider-Man is an ideal fit for the studio: an energetic and dynamic hero in the hands of a team known for open-worlds that are sprawling jungle gyms, where it can let players loose with thrilling traversal mechanics and varied combat systems for crime fighting fun. Insomniac also excels at crafting narratives that are as earnest as they are dramatic--perfect for the tumultuous lives of Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
Last October, I wrote an op-ed for this very website presenting my case for a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Super Smash Bros. At the time, I thought it was a slam dunk; of the top 10 best-selling games on the original Nintendo Switch, Smash Bros.--which is currently still the third best-selling Switch 1 game ever as of June 30--was the only one to not see any Switch 2-related update, let alone a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52Fei-sLLQc&pp=ygUIcGlrbWluIDQ%3D New Nintendo Switch 2 Editions Six games are now getting the Switch 2 bump after today's Direct: three first-party titles and three third-party games. On the third-party side, The Witcher 3's upcoming Remastered Edition will hit Switch 2 in September, while cozy sim Palia will add seasonal updates, community events and new Echo Expeditions with its Switch 2 Edition in December.

Worried about Onimusha's difficulty after the demo? I have the death count to prove the full game's got teeth Plenty of challenge awaits in Onimusha: Way of the Sword once you get past the game's opening hours. When Capcom released a demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword a few months ago, a vocal portion of action game fans landed somewhere between concerned and crestfallen—enemies just weren't aggressive enough, leaving them worried the final game would be unchallenging to the point of boredom. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Wes has been covering games and hardware for more than 10 years, first at tech sites like The Wirecutter and Tested before joining the PC Gamer team in 2014.
"The things that we based our assumptions on have changed fundamentally": Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani on the games industry's rapid transformation The executive says that long development times, the rise of Asian developers, and the advent of new tech like AI make predicting the future hard, but indies are well positioned for success The CEO of Helldivers 2 maker Arrowhead Game Studios, Shams Jorjani, has said that the games industry is in a "transitional phase at the moment". Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at Gamescom, the executive said the strategies that worked for developers and publishers through the 2010s are not "working anymore". [Steam Replay 2025 showed that 44% of user playtime was on titles between one and seven years old] People scream for new games and IPs, but they don't actually buy them. That will allow us to know that we're able to hit that specific group, and we should do this now, early into development rather than waiting two years after getting broad user tests." He concludes: "But it requires you to let go of that old playbook of playing your cards close to the chest for years, and then dazzle and razzle." Fallout co-creator Timothy Cain, whose most recent portfolio entries include the likes of The Outer Worlds 2 and its predecessor over at Obsidian Entertainment, thinks developers have a lot to learn from bad games – not just successful titles. It's a tale as old as time, as Cain describes in his latest YouTube video (below). A game becomes a smash hit – think anything from indie to AAA, Meccha Chameleon to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – and the industry goes wild with copies or clones, attempting to recapture that same success. This might even lead to other folks copying the bad aspects of "good" games.
How Vampire Survivors became Vampire Crawlers: Six lessons from building a game based on another developer's IP Nosebleed Interactive's Andreas Firnigl on crafting a spin-off of Poncle's smash hit: pub prototypes, shared rules, last-minute changes and more Andreas Firnigl started his career as a tester on Big Mutha Truckers, way back on Gamecube. He founded Nosebleed Interactive almost 15 years ago as CEO and creative director. In 2023, an old contact I had worked with 15 years ago – and who is now at Poncle – came to us with the amazing opportunity to collaborate on a Vampire Survivors spin-off. Luca Galante, the creator of Vampire Survivors, had come up with the idea for a card game spin-off and had already developed an early prototype, but Poncle wanted an external studio to help turn it into a complete game.

When you start a new game in Game Freak’s Beast of Reincarnation, a prompt asks if you’d like to play in cinematic mode. This locks the cutscene frame rate to 24 frames per second, but, understandably, leaves the gameplay as is. When I first saw this during my 90-minute preview session last month, it felt like a bold statement from Game Freak. https://youtu.be/erQ4lIW4Yo8?si=tohRNx3gTrRzvey2 This, in part, is due to the art direction.
'I would die': Obsession star Inde Navarrette would love a role in Resident Evil "I love that world," Navarrette said. Another week, another fun tidbit learned about our new favorite gamer turned movie star, Inde Navarrette, who creeped us all the hell out in the smash-hit horror film Obsession earlier this year. We already marveled at Navarrette cooly streaming her Call of Duty killstreaks on Twitch while wearing a Toad hat, and we were charmed to hear she (in part) learned to build PCs by watching Henry Cavill do it on YouTube. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Chris started playing PC games in the 1980s, started writing about them in the early 2000s, and (finally) started getting paid to write about them in the late 2000s.

PETA wants to give an abandoned KFC a second life by turning it into the world’s first “Chicken Empathy Museum.” The animal rights organization has set its sights on a vacant former KFC in Fleetwood, Lancashire, with plans to replace fried chicken meals with exhibits dedicated to the birds. In a letter to Landwood Property Auctions, PETA asked whether the building’s owner would consider lending or donating the property for educational use. However, the plan has already hit a snag. Landwood reportedly sold the building last summer and advised PETA to track down its current owner through the UK Land Registry.
