New Super Mario Bros.
Wii Sports holds an important place in Nintendo’s history. It’s the best-selling piece of software the company has ever made, one that permeated culture in surprising ways, and its success helped rejuvenate Nintendo after a period of steady decline. While subsequent sports titles from Nintendo never sold quite as well as the original Wii Sports, they’ve become a fixture for each new console, much like a new Mario Kart or Pokémon. The game is coming out during a particularly hectic time for new video game releases, and it’s sandwiched between two flashier Switch 2 titles in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and the upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Though it may not be a sales juggernaut on the scale of Mario or The Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem is one of Nintendo's preeminent franchises. Like so many of its vaunted stablemates, the series is almost as old as Nintendo's gaming ambitions, debuting on the Famicom and appearing on nearly every home and handheld console since. Given this prominence, it's almost difficult to believe that Fire Emblem's future was ever in jeopardy, but such was indeed once the case; there was a point in time when the series was very much on the verge of cancellation, and it took a dramatic shakeup to reverse its fortunes. The series' second worldwide release (and final GBA installment), The Sacred Stones , arrived in 2005 and moved more than 700,000 copies over its lifetime, while GameCube's Path of Radiance followed later that same year and sold more than half a million copies–well enough to satisfy Nintendo's expectations, considering the system's age and comparatively small user base.

Zelda fans have had no shortage of new games to play in recent years, but it appears that one game--starring the franchise's iconic villain--was also in the works at one point. Rather than having Nintendo internally develop the game, however, the project was in the works at Ubisoft. In a September 24 report, Insider Gaming says that Ubisoft Milan was working on a Zelda spin-off with the internal name "Goliath," which was set to star a new protagonist. However, the report says that Nintendo "rejected the prototype" back in late 2023, and the team--including Davide Soliani, who directed the Mario + Rabbids games--opted to leave Ubisoft and form their own studio, Day 4 Night, which is currently developing Bradley the Badger .

There’s never really been a game like Grand Theft Auto VI before, one that has completely altered the lineup of games around it. Everyone, it seems, is scared of going up against Grand Theft Auto VI. Everyone, that is, except for Nintendo. September just began, and already we’ve had launches like Star Wars Zero Company, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, with heavy hitters like Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, and a remastered Witcher 3 coming later in the month.

Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that the Star Fox 64 Remake and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book happened because of the characters' appearances in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Star Fox has had a bit of a whirlwind year. Fox McCloud played by Glenn Powell was announced for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie right before it was released, less than a month later a new (well, old) game was announced, and the following month it was released as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. Speaking to Famitsu (via Nintendo Everything), Miyamoto explains, "I don’t decide everything about the lineup, but we did discuss that ‘we have an idea to include Fox in the script for the [Super Mario Galaxy] Movie, so we definitely want a new Star Fox game.'" But Fox wasn't the only character to benefit from their starring role in the film, as Miyamoto explains, "It was decided early on that Yoshi would appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, so we decided to make a Yoshi game, and that’s how development of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book began." Latest Videos FromGamesRadar+ Synergy between the games and the movies goes both ways too, as he explains that while working on The Super Mario Bros.
