Crimson Desert is one of 2026's most successful releases. The game managed to sell over 6 million copies in just three months , and ended up being so profitable that its publisher ended up giving each employee at development studio Pearl Abyss a $3,400 bonus . Since launch, the dev has been committed to improving the game and correcting some of the more egregious issues that were present at launch.
Celeste and TowerFall have been removed from the Xbox store in a move to "support the BDS boycott" against Microsoft This follows fellow indie dev House House announcing Big Walk will not be coming to Xbox It's a good day to love Celeste! Earlier today it was discovered that Celeste had been removed from the Xbox Store while it remained on the PlayStation and Nintendo digital storefronts. Now, as shared by the game's co-creator Maddy Thorson, it's been confirmed that both Celeste and TowerFall were removed from store expressly in support of the BDS called boycott against Xbox over Microsoft providing support to the Israeli military as it enacts its genocide of the Palestinian people. We did this to support the BDS boycott — Maddy Thorson (@maddymakesgames.com) October 29, 2026 at 2:40 PM For those not in the know, BDS called for the boycott of Microsoft and Xbox games and hardware last year over the tech company providing AI software to the Israeli military which was used specifically to target Palestinian civilians; Microsoft have even confirmed that they were providing this software.
With a cracking new tactical feature and dedicated UI "strike team", Football Manager 27 is a huge step back towards FM's best form Arteta tête. Welcome back, Football Manager. Football Manager 27 is a big, much-appreciated step in the right direction. He put Bruno Fernandes back in the number 10 role, reverted to a familiar 4-2-3-1 formation, gave a relatively large amount of creative freedom to more creative players, and set them up in more of a fluid counterattacking mid-block as opposed to Amorim's structured, finely-tuned high press.

In the wake of Dragon Age and Mass Effect studio BioWare getting shut down and Mass Effect 5 being canceled, co-founder and former general manager Greg Zeschuk says that most executives behind decisions like this have never actually made games before or "know how it works." BioWare's closure was shocking news, but sadly, layoffs and disruption at EA weren't unexpected after it was announced that the publisher was going private in a $55 billion acquisition deal from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners, and Silver Lake. In my spare time, you're sure to find me on my Nintendo Switch or PS5 playing through story-driven RPGs like Xenoblade Chronicles and Persona 5 Royal, nuzlocking old Pokemon games, or going for a Victory Royale in Fortnite.

"AAA publishers are abusing Early Access," RPG dev says, and Steam games like Subnautica 2 and Path of Exile have warped "the landscape and players' expectations" Denis Dyack – founder of Silicon Knights and current CEO of Apocalypse Studios – says that AAA publishers' use of Early Access is shifting player expectations and making it harder for independent teams. Specifically, he cites developers releasing a "polished product" and using the Early Access standing as "a marketing beat," the problem being that the quality of these titles, in turn, will lead gamers "expecting a near-perfect game," which Dyack asserts "defeats the purpose of Early Access, which is a collaborative development process based on player feedback." "AAA publishers are abusing Early Access, skewing player expectations in such a way that it heavily disadvantages smaller independent developers," Dyack continues, citing Subnautica 2 and Path of Exile as examples of titles that used the program "drastically changing the landscape and players' expectations." With Apocalypse Studios' Deadhaus Sonata, he says the team hit "significant barriers to entry" which in turn "significantly reduced" their market impact.
"This company has been driven into a wall for years" - Life is Strange studio Don't Nod faces unrest while teetering on insolvency "For two years, employees have been living on the edge." There's deep unrest at French studio Don't Nod - creator of Life is Strange, Remember Me, Vampyr, Banishers: New Eden, and most recently Aphelion - as it scrambles to restructure itself and guard against insolvency. Indeed, an impassioned account of proceedings on French union Le Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo's website (via Rock, Paper, Shotgun) reveals Don't Nod has entered safeguard proceedings - a kind of last-ditch restructuring effort to stave off insolvency. It also reports that even though redundancies are being made,Don't Nod intends to finish making the in-development game codenamed P14, albeit relying more on outsourced development rather than its cut-down in-house team. Behind the scenes, though, things with the next Mass Effect were on shaky ground for some time, reportedly, as the massive $55 billion EA buyout by Saudi Arabia's private investment fund, Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners, and private equity fund Silver Lake fell into place.

The good news is that the other system requirements are pretty tame – 16GB of RAM, an Intel i5-10600k or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, and an Nvidia 3060 or equivalent are recommended for 1440p – and Phantom Blade Zero is worth a significant portion of your drive. Our Phantom Blade Zero review calls this kung fu epic "a GOTY contender with combat that looks as good as it feels." We're in good company: Phantom Blade Zero's Metacritic score puts it ahead of Capcom's Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Koei Tecmo's Nioh 3, which are both fabulous new action games in their own right.
"EA never actually sells anything," former Mass Effect 5 dev says – so don't expect the RPG to be saved as "they just shut things down and sit on their licenses" Mass Effect fans got horrible news last week with the announcement of BioWare's closure as well as the cancellation of Mass Effect 5 – or, as it apparently would have been called, Mass Effect Universe. And just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, one former dev now suggests that EA isn't likely to sell the project to another studio to finish it off, either. Romain Toutain served as franchise technical director for Mass Effect at BioWare since early 2022, and in a recent Twitch stream reacting to this trailer – which he describes as an internal trailer rather than one we were ever meant to see – he responds to a fan asking if EA could have sold the studio and its project in order to save them (translated by Bluesky user loustica-lucia and verified using machine translation). In my spare time, you're sure to find me on my Nintendo Switch or PS5 playing through story-driven RPGs like Xenoblade Chronicles and Persona 5 Royal, nuzlocking old Pokemon games, or going for a Victory Royale in Fortnite.
Mass Effect 5 was named Universe partly because it let players generate alternate timelines based on their choices in previous entries, technical director says The system was part of BioWare's effort to give the player "absolute autonomy", according to Romain Toutain In case you missed it, an internal trailer for the new Mass Effect game which BioWare were working on prior to EA shutting them down hit the net late last week. It offered a peek at what the studio were cooking with this new entry, dubbed Mass Effect Universe. According to its technical director, one of the reasons the game was given that name was that it had a system aimed at letting players form alternate timelines based on their choices in previous Mass Effects. BioWare's incredible legacy will continue as long as there are RPGs EA is shutting down the venerable studio, but its impact will persevere. For my column this week I was going to write about climbing all over monsters in Dragon Dogma 2's chilly Dark Arisen expansion, but then EA decided to finally murder BioWare after years of slowly poisoning it. So sadly I am pivoting to this eulogy. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Fraser is the UK online editor and has actually met The Internet in person.

Open-world spy game from Grand Theft Auto devs never happened because Rockstar couldn't get it right: "Other people can try, but I personally think it's hard" In 2009, GTA 6 developer Rockstar Games revealed a totally new series to the public: Agent, an open-world stealth romp set during the 1970s' Cold War that was due to be exclusive to the PS3.
Cyberpunk 2 associate game director Pawel Sasko revealed that a good chunk of the game’s staff are actually former modders who CD Projekt Red picked up to work on the highly-anticipated sequel. Sasko made these comments during one of CDPR’s REDstreams on October 21, where the team discussed the bevy of exciting new updates coming to Cyberpunk 2077. As part of this discussion, they explained their decision to introduce cross-platform support for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S, saying this was done both to keep the game fresh and to actively support the creativity of its modders. In fact, the good folks at CDPR have actually partnered with modders in the game’s community as part of these updates, and even credited them with helping keep the title afloat.
A Valve developer casually dropped the HLX codename into a public Q&A, and Half-Life 3 hopefuls pounced on every letter. But on October 21, a veteran composer grabbed a live microphone and used Half Life 3’s codename in a Q&A session. According to this person “Valve knows how much the official announcement is going to shake the gaming world, they’re enjoying teasing us.” Morasky composed the music for Half-Life: Alyx, Portal 2 and Counter-Strike 2, and in a 2023 interview he referred to more than one Half-Life game before correcting himself to one. Related Until now, fans traced HLX through datamined strings in Dota 2, Counter-Strike 2 and Deadlock updates, while leakers like Gabe Follower and Tyler McVicker described a non-VR Half-Life built on Source 2.
Mass Effect 5 was "something special", dev says – it was BioWare's response to what Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 devs "were bringing to the table" Mass Effect 5 is no more following the closure of BioWare after the EA buyout – but former developers believe it would've been an incredible RPG, had it come to fruition. Tony de Waal, who acted as cinematic supervisor at BioWare and boasted some 29 years of experience at the studio, implies as much in a new LinkedIn post, explaining that he worked on everything from Mass Effect 2 to Dragon Age: The Veilguard – a game he says "was a herculean effort that tested the limits of even my workaholic mindset" – before Mass Effect 5. "I believe we were making something special," he describes. "A level of autonomy and choice that no other game has been able to match." The dev then references Baldur's Gate 3 team Larian Studios and CD Projekt Red, masterminds behind The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, recalling how BioWare looked to them: "We saw what Larian and CD Projekt were bringing to the table with their latest offerings, and started down a path to bring Mass Effect to the next level while remaining true to the Trilogy." The cinematic mastermind closes by admitting "I'm sad you won't ever get to see what we were cooking" and paying tribute to his fellow devs, "some of the most talented people I've had the pleasure of working with throughout my career." Interestingly, though, de Waal isn't the only BioWare veteran to reference Mass Effect 5 and how good it might've played had it been given the chance it deserved from EA to actually come to life.
"We made a very difficult decision": Australian indie showcase Freeplay reject antisemitism claims after delisting a Jewish sponsor who was allegedly accused of being a "zionist" Unnamed speaker criticised Unpacking dev's inclusion The organisers of Australian independent games showcase Parallels have rejected accusations of "prejudice" and say they've received "violent threats", after a Jewish developer had her sponsorship of the event refunded. The developer in question is Wren Brier, creative director at Witch Beam. On 8th October, Brier announced that Parallels organisers Freeplay had refunded and delisted her sponsorship, following complaints about her involvement from the anonymous speaker. According to Brier, the speaker called her a "zionist", apparently based on the presence of Witch Beam's 2021 puzzler Unpacking in a round-up of Israeli and Jewish-made videogames from The Jewish Independent, published on 5th October to mark this year's Melbourne International Games Week.
Following EA's decision to shut down BioWare , the game that would've been the fifth entry in the Mass Effect series is being dumped out of an airlock, never to become a finished article that'll reach players hands as its creators envisioned. The larger tragedy is, of course, the job losses and the closure of a studio with a legacy befitting RPG royalty, but it's still sad that next Mass Effect will never come out, and some of the folks who worked on it have begun offering some insight into what the team were hoping to accomplish.
EA is shutting down RPG veteran Bioware "to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth" Gotta think of those quarterlies Venerable RPG studio Bioware announced on it is shutting down after more than 30 years of making RPGs. The studio is responsible for making the original Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem. In an open letter from EA's Chief Operating Officer David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber explained the closure, saying "we’re making deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth." They also cancelled a project in The Sims series code-named project Lotus, prioritising instead another called Project Evergreen. EA has closed BioWare, canceled the next Mass Effect, and, most importantly, upended the lives of even more game developers in a tumultuous time for the industry. In response, developers are paying tribute to the legendary RPG studio online, with many calling its games pivotal to their own creative paths. 17-year BioWare veteran and longtime director Michael Gamble shared the studio's news post. New Bungie head Josh Deane replied to Gamble's post, saying, "Thank you and to everyone at Bioware who has built worlds that have been such an important part of our lives." In a separate post, Deane adds, "This studio is magical and an existential part of my favorite gaming memories, I refuse to believe this..." CD Projekt Red veteran Paweł Sasko, a face of the studio to many fans of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher, says "Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 shaped my imagination and the desire to create games.
