Today we’re diving into Star Wars Zero Company, the turn-based tactics game from Bit Reactor that drops you into the twilight of the Clone Wars. Zero Company gives you lots of ways to customize your team, including a variety of specializations (aka character classes), different weapon types, weapon mods, and equippable items that can define each character’s playstyle. EA's Saudi Arabian owners are reportedly considering forming an ubermegacorp by merging them with Savvy Games No decision's been made as of yet, report claims Just over a month on from a consortium led by the Saudi Arabian government's Public Investment Fund taking over EA, in a buyout worth $55 billion, said new owners are reportedly considering merging the publishers with their existing gaming firm Savvy Games Group. The result would be an ubermegacorp to serve as a vehicle for all of the Saudi wealth fund's future video game-related biz. The report notes that no decision has been made either way yet, with the fact that Savvy are currently in the process of buying Chinese mobile game developers and publishers Moonton for $6 billion meaning any EA/Savvy merger's not likely to happen right away. "We probably need a few more Expedition 33s to just prove them wrong" – the maker of Valor Mortis on why publishers should have faith in AA Polish studio One More Level struggled on after losing its funding, but found a saviour in the form of a film company spin-off Over the past 12 years, Polish studio One More Level has carved out a niche in the world of AA games with projects whose production values often approach those of AAA titles. Its eye-catching 2020 cyberpunk action platformer Ghostrunner launched to critical acclaim and commercial success, selling 5.6 million units according to Video Game Insights estimates, and it was followed by a sequel in 2023. Over the past few years, investment has dried up at the same time as competition has increased, so smaller publishers have tended to prefer betting on games with smaller budgets of $1 million or less, while the big players have gone all in on evergreen titles. But for Valor Mortis, One More Level initially signed up with the indie label Private Division, only for parent Take-Two to begin scaling back the publisher in 2024, with Take-Two head Strauss Zelnick saying that the firm wanted to focus on AAA: "We're in the business of making great big hits." (Private Division's catalogue was sold and the company reemerged as Fictions in 2025; the publisher is behind the recently released Beast of Reincarnation from Pokémon studio Game Freak.) Ratusznik says One More Level was considering self-publishing Valor Mortis after the Private Division deal fell through.

This time the studio in question is PowerWash Simulator developer FuturLab, who have laid off seven staff members with little fanfare after cancelling a project that has been in development for several years. This comes from This Week In Videogames, whose sources told them that FutureLab CEO Kirsty Rigden announced this unrevealed project had been cancelled back in June, 2026, with work having started on it two to three years ago. "20 players is the sweet spot": Guild Wars 3's action game combat is a first for MMOs, but it doesn't work at traditional raid scale A more intimate MMO Arenanet are keeping a lot of Guild Wars 3 hidden away. Throughout the short presentation of their new fantasy MMO, the refrain is 'We're not talking about that yet'. "We've been talking about it for ages and we started this project with that in mind: we wanted to make something that's more like a visceral action game." Johanson adds that he and Stocker started talking about implementing this combination of free movement and combat in an MMO back in 2015, when the team were making Guild Wars 2's Heart of Thorns expansion – "This has been a very long journey to that point." Stocker jumps into a different part of Orr, leaving behind the bright greenery for a gloomy, fog-filled valley. Steam Week in Review: 54 idle games released on Steam last week, and many look eerily similar All the interesting Steam facts for the week ending September 6. When Cookie Clicker and Candy Box both released in quick succession in 2013, I remember them being received mostly as a joke, or else as an amusing parody of "watch numbers go up" RPG gameplay. None of those listed above are likely to rival genre heavyweights like Bongo Cat (currently being played by 135,803 people), Task Bar Hero (66,292 people) and Banana (3,628). In 2020 there were 100, in 2024 there were 647, last year there were 1033 and this year—so far!—there are 1811.
Inside Tencent's long-term strategy: live service, AI tools, and evergreen titles "I think people should just not be afraid of AI" Many column inches have been spent questioning the wisdom of focusing on live-service. Sony gambled and lost, as did many other companies chasing the dream of steady recurring revenues, while firms like Capcom that stuck to the traditional path have emerged relatively unscathed. That includes Miniclip, Sumo Digital, Funcom, Fat Shark, Sharkmob, 10 Chambers, and Stunlock Studios in Europe, as well as Digital Extremes in North America and Grinding Gear Games in New Zealand. The more people love your game, the more they're going to play your game." With wall-running and surprisingly weighty combat, Guild Wars 3 is aiming high: "If we hadn't been making MMOs for 26 years I don't think we could have built this" If not for the grass I've spent hours gazing at in Guild Wars 2, I might not have recognized Guild Wars 3. So there's a lot more contextual ways to trigger skills, where we end up with as many options – in some cases even more – that end up feeling better." When I ask if there are plans to bring Guild Wars 3 to more consoles including the Nintendo Switch 2, pointing to Final Fantasy 14's recent port, Johanson says ArenaNet's "focus for launch" is PS5.
Nothing screams Fortnite like the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, am I right? Focus Features announced Wednesday that the new movie The Uprising, starring Andrew Garfield, is now available to play as a custom experience on Fortnite ahead of the Paul Greengrass-directed film’s theatrical release on September 10. Even for Fortnite – which has a long history of pop cultural collaborations including Star Wars, Marvel, DC, LEGO, The Witcher, Godzilla and Kong, Stranger Things, John Wick, and Back to the Future – The Uprising is a curious film to see on this platform. The period drama – which may or may not (still) be a Robin Hood origin movie – chronicles the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, which was led by historical figures Wat Tyler (played by Shogun’s Cosmo Jarvis) and John Ball (played by Jamie Bell).
The Big Picture: What you need to know about the ongoing games industry reset Amir Satvat's talk at Gamescom Dev laid bare the reasons behind the catastrophic layoffs – and what needs to be done The games industry is undergoing a reset. Back in December, Satvat told GamesIndustry.biz that he expected around 7,500 redundancies across the industry in 2026, down from the roughly 9,200 in 2025. "And now because more and more people in China are going to college, each year we can comfortably expect 10 million plus people who are going to have computers." On the one hand, he said, the Chinese market offers a market opportunity for developers outside China, because the "taste for games in China [is] not that different from the taste [in] other places." But on the other hand, Chinese developers will provide more competition globally, "because God, when you go over there and you see the volume and the number of studios… And I think in most cases, we have all underestimated how transformative and impactful that's going to be over the next few years." Growth and contraction In terms of where growth opportunities lay, Satvat pointed towards large user-generated content (UGC) platforms like Roblox and UEFN, but also sounded a note of caution that the "revenue opportunities on those platforms [are] concentrated in the hands of a very small number of people." Competition is getting ever tougher: the number of new Steam releases reached around 12,000 in H1 2026, up 19% year on year. Satvat pointed to the collapse in global games start-up funding from $9.9 billion in 2021 to just $2 billion in 2023, and a similar drop in private equity and venture capital funding from $12.1 billion to $2.7 billion.

The XCOM series has been effectively on hiatus for many years now, and AAA turn-based-tactics games have been pretty hard to come by recently. That's changing, however, starting with this week's launch of Star Wars Zero Company . It's effectively a marriage of classic XCOM gameplay and Clone Wars-era Star Wars storytelling, and within a few minutes of starting it, I got that same rush of excitement I got the first time I played an XCOM game. And just like Zero Company, Rainbow 6 Tactics will be available on Xbox and PS5 in addition to PC, giving it a wide audience when it arrives in 2027.
"Somebody will make the Half-Life 2 of AI" - after the Rideshare controversy, Saber CCO says something will come along and "change people's minds" about gen-AI "Consumers don't really know what they want or they don't want." Saber Interactive made headlines recently when its boss had an ugly spat with a former employee about the company's use of gen-AI in taxi game Rideshare Stimulator. Matthew Karch, Saber's co-founder and CEO, since apologised, and made sure Rideshare got proper AI disclosure labels on Steam. Saber is a large video game developer and publisher with 15 studios around the world, responsible for games like the acclaimed Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. Its roster of upcoming games includes a new big-budget John Wick action game, a new Stuntman driving game, a new Turok game, a Hellraiser game, a Jurassic Park survival game, and the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake.
