Nintendo is celebrating a legal win against Switch mod devices. A Dutch court has ruled in the company's favor against an online retailer of Mig Switch Cards in the Netherlands, ordering the seller to stop offering the devices. "The Defendant operated what is often known as a 'dropshipping' delivery system," Nintendo says in a press release, "where products ordered by consumers on websites targeting European consumers, including those in the Netherlands, are delivered directly from Asia, primarily China. The Court ruled that, by offering and selling circumvention devices marketed as 'MIG Switch Cards' and 'MIG Switch Dumpers' for Nintendo Switch on several websites (r4switch.nl, ther4card.com, and r4switch.co.uk), the Defendant acted unlawfully [and] respectively infringed Nintendo’s copyrights." Mig products are often listed as a way for players to back up the Switch games they already own.

There are many, many downsides to Sony ending physical disc production in 2028. However, one small silver lining, according to a former higher-up at Square Enix, is that games will get cheaper. On Twitter, Jacob Navok, director of business development at Square Enix from 2010 to 2015, commented on the nature of video game pricing. "This is because publishers set pricing on digital stores." The likes of Epic Games Store and Steam having to compete makes life better for developers, because their cuts improve - hypothetically, at least - and on digital storefronts, the basement continually lowers for many releases.
UK Employment Rights Act 2025: Harassment law is getting tougher – and games companies need to be ready New rules mean employers are liable for harassment committed by third parties, and confidentiality clauses that prevent workers from speaking out are being prohibited This is the second article in our series analysing the potential impact of the new Employment Rights Act (ERA) 2025 on games businesses operating within the UK. In the first article, we explored how ERA 2025 bolsters trade union powers and what that could mean for the industry, particularly given recent pushes for unionisation. This time, we turn to another area where employers are facing a significant increase in their legal obligations: harassment. The Equality Act 2010 originally contained provisions making employers liable where employees were harassed by third parties, but these were repealed by the Coalition Government in 2013.

As monumental as Sony’s decision to abandon PlayStation discs by 2028 is, it isn’t surprising one bit . The move feels like the culmination of industry trends dating back over a decade, and it recalls one egregious business practice--one that took aim at the used-game market, whether companies would admit it or not--that caused a brief uproar before fading away into the depths of our collective memory. There was a period at the end of the 2000s and start of the 2010s when big publishers including EA, Ubisoft, and, yes, PlayStation implemented an “online pass” for games that included a multiplayer component. When attempting to justify the presence of an online pass for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 in 2010, then-EA Sports senior vice president (and current EA CEO) Andrew Wilson said that the company “made a significant investment” in its online services and that it wants to reserve those features for “people who pay EA to access them.” Sony used similar reasoning when explaining its PSN Pass, with Uncharted 3 director Justin Richmond explaining in 2011 the need for server maintenance, adding that “at some point, you know, games have to make money.” It was a similar sentiment from a Battlefield 3 producer, who was a bit more explicit when stating: “We would rather have you buy a new game than a used game because buying a used game is only a cost to us; we don't get a single dime from a used game, but we still need to create server space and everything for you.” Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception But consumer backlash was quick and brutal, and the practice was phased out by 2013.
