BioWare's incredible legacy will continue as long as there are RPGs EA is shutting down the venerable studio, but its impact will persevere. For my column this week I was going to write about climbing all over monsters in Dragon Dogma 2's chilly Dark Arisen expansion, but then EA decided to finally murder BioWare after years of slowly poisoning it. So sadly I am pivoting to this eulogy. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Fraser is the UK online editor and has actually met The Internet in person.

Control Resonant is delightfully weird: a sequel that isn't afraid to fly its freak flag as it pits you against all manner of supernatural phenomena wreaking havoc on Manhattan. But between bosses that resemble Francis Bacon-inspired nightmare fuel and other spooky occurrences, The Board is undoubtedly the scene-stealer of Control Resonant--and that's without you even seeing them! The Board is louder than ever as it accompanies Dylan Faden in Remedy's new game, seemingly trapped in the powerful shape-shifting artifact that he uses to smash his way through The Hiss and The Patterning. The Board is right here, and you get to experience the full council." A symbolic version of anger The Board was the first audio concept made for Control Resonant, with work on the entity dating back to September 2021, Pierrot said.
Mass Effect 5 was "something special", dev says – it was BioWare's response to what Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 devs "were bringing to the table" Mass Effect 5 is no more following the closure of BioWare after the EA buyout – but former developers believe it would've been an incredible RPG, had it come to fruition. Tony de Waal, who acted as cinematic supervisor at BioWare and boasted some 29 years of experience at the studio, implies as much in a new LinkedIn post, explaining that he worked on everything from Mass Effect 2 to Dragon Age: The Veilguard – a game he says "was a herculean effort that tested the limits of even my workaholic mindset" – before Mass Effect 5. "I believe we were making something special," he describes. "A level of autonomy and choice that no other game has been able to match." The dev then references Baldur's Gate 3 team Larian Studios and CD Projekt Red, masterminds behind The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, recalling how BioWare looked to them: "We saw what Larian and CD Projekt were bringing to the table with their latest offerings, and started down a path to bring Mass Effect to the next level while remaining true to the Trilogy." The cinematic mastermind closes by admitting "I'm sad you won't ever get to see what we were cooking" and paying tribute to his fellow devs, "some of the most talented people I've had the pleasure of working with throughout my career." Interestingly, though, de Waal isn't the only BioWare veteran to reference Mass Effect 5 and how good it might've played had it been given the chance it deserved from EA to actually come to life.
After a few hours with Yakuza studio's soulful Stranger Than Heaven, I'm smitten, but I suspect it'll be a divisive game Opening act. Who doesn't love a big swing, a bold new direction, especially when so many video game publishers seem increasingly determined to walk the safest route? While Stranger Than Heaven might look familiar at first glance - particularly if you're a fan of Like a Dragon developer RGG's other third-person action games - it differs where it counts. Read this next - Sega and Netflix partner for a "cute yet cool" Sonic TV Show, a Crazy Taxi film, and a "badass action" Stranger Than Heaven adaptation - Yakuza and Like a Dragon developer RGG Studio finally gives Stranger Than Heaven a release window - Stranger Than Heaven's new combat system sounds pretty complicated, but looks absolutely amazing

Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft is less than a month away, and it already looks like it's going to be a massive expansion to the tabletop game. But there are still a lot of questions about whether this new expansion is going to lean more towards the combat-oriented approach of the MMO or just be a traditional D&D game on Azeroth. At New York Comic Con, I got a chance to sit down with Wizards of the Coast principal game designer James Wyatt to talk about the first Universes Beyond expansion for D&D. From how he was talking about the expansion, it really does sound more like a D&D game taking place on Azeroth than trying to shove WoW's complicated mechanics and combat focus on the TTRPG.

For the second year in a row, New York Comic Con served as a launching pad for a new Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond expansion. While 2025's reveal focused on four teenage turtles, this year's panel revealed Marvel Darkhold Destiny, a deep dive into the more mystical elements of the Marvel universe. To learn more about the mechanics, monsters, and magic of this new Marvel set, we sat down with lead designer Mark Rosewater, narrative designer Dillon Deveney, art director Merideth Mulroney, and Marvel director of product development Jesse Falcon. "The subtype was really resonant, and we know that a lot of people do like Arcane, they just don't love Splice Onto Arcane, so it's a way to turn something that maybe is seen as a bug into a feature." Penance Stare The legend problem One of the major critiques of the Marvel Super Heroes set was the number of legendary creatures included: Between the main set, the preconstructed Commander decks, and the other supplemental products, 375 legendary creatures debuted in June's superhero set.
Our Verdict Asus' 20th anniversary edition of the Xbox ROG Ally X is as bougie as the $300 price bump implies. For - OLED - No more stick drift - Great thermals Against - $300 more than an already pricey handheld - No performance uplift on the Xbox Ally X PC Gamer's got your back The Asus ROG 20th anniversary lineup has been interesting. The actual top dog, the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM and its Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor, ekes out better performance with anywhere between a 20-40% performance uplift in our game testing, but it's also just under 40% more expensive in the US. View Original View Original View Original View Original View Original View Original View Original The new OLED screen goes up to a peak brightness of 1,400 nits, which is bright enough to even bring this bad boy outdoors, and with the Lenovo Legion Go 2's 8.8-inch OLED panel going up to 1,000 nits and the OneXPlayer 3's 8.8-inch AMOLED display going up to 1,100 nits (though these two go up to 144 Hz), I'd pick the Asus model out of the three.
'There is no secret sauce' to a successful live service game according to Overwatch's associate game director, but knowing your audience is a good start "We occupy this really unique spot in the middle." Not many live service games have stood the test of time quite like Overwatch. 10 years in and it's still been able to retain its playerbase, maintain momentum, and even ramp it up. Well, besides having really cute skins and a very enticing game loop, Team 4 figured out exactly where Overwatch needed to stand years ago. I can't wait for players to see some of the archetypes that are coming next season, and especially Season 1 next year." 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Elie is a news writer with an unhealthy love of horror games—even though their greatest fear is being chased.
At this year's New York Comic Con, I met with Square Enix to check out two of its upcoming RPG projects. One was Final Fantasy VII Revelation , a game firmly planted in the modern era of video games with top-of-the-line visuals and all the trimmings of a AAA, big-budget game. The other was Romancing Saga 3: Destinies United, a remake of a classic turn-based RPG from the mid-1990s. We'll find out when Romancing Saga 3: Destinies United launches in February for PlayStation 5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Laura Fryer, one of the first developers to join Microsoft Game Studios back in 1995, says she "watched the birth" of Halo Studios – formerly 343 Industries – while working on Gears of War 2, dubbing it "a ghost town." According to Fryer, who now regularly uploads videos about the video game industry on her YouTube channel, the Halo team was "next door" to her own – and after witnessing how it supposedly came to be, she says she's "not surprised" by Halo Studios' recent layoffs. "343 Industries didn't start staffing up as a development studio until late 2009 (Gears 2, incidentally, shipped late 2008 in the west and mid 2009 elsewhere – the actual work executed in NC not WA)," Israel continues, already leaving some holes in Fryer's own tale.

The weird experience of liking a game before it's 'fixed' Has this ever happened to you? I was one of the weirdos who gave Battlefield 2042 a positive review at the same time as it was being called the worst Battlefield of all time. BF 2042's giant 128-player maps did have desolate stretches where you could wind up stranded, hoofing it without cover, but I liked that. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Tyler grew up in Silicon Valley during the '80s and '90s, playing games like Zork and Arkanoid on early PCs.
