New-ish Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has had a busy first six months on the job, including killing the divisive "This is Xbox" marketing campaign, slashing Xbox Game Pass Ultimate's subscription price, and unfortunately also overseeing mass layoffs and development studio spin-outs. But as Sharma has gotten settled in her job, she's also been spending time understanding Xbox's products and customers in another way: by fielding customer support tickets. In a new profile on her personal and business background in The Wall Street Journal (with a hat tip to TweakTown), the paper learned a lot about Xbox's new CEO – including how, "To better understand players, she spends a few hours each month responding to customer support tickets, during which she’s learned how complex it can be to fix a single player’s problem." So there's a nonzero chance that if you've filed a customer support ticket with Xbox over the past six months, the CEO herself has personally addressed it. Sharma recently told her studios to focus on Xbox's underserved core franchises, which has included one move most fans seem united in their delight about: Fallout New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment has begun work on a new Fallout RPG, to be directed by New Vegas creative boss and decorated RPG developer Josh Sawyer.
Those years of Valve’s benign neglect of VR make the imminent release of the $1,059 Steam Frame—which starts taking reservations today—more than a little surprising. The Frame even sports fancy extras like eye-tracking for effective foveated rendering in the center of your vision and an SD card slot for expanded storage (you can also splurge for a $1,299 Frame version that upgrades the internal storage from 256GB to 1TB). But the relatively weak Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor in the Frame means the games are limited to relatively undemanding 2D titles or older 3D titles (Portal 2, anyone?) Even a game like Returnal, which can hit a “Playable” 30 fps on the aging Steam Deck, managed a paltry 9 fps in benchmarks on the Frame at 720p “Low” graphics settings. Late to the party For most players, it’s hard to recommend the $1,049 Steam Frame over a $599 Meta Quest 3 (or even a $349 Quest 3S for the more budget-minded).

Gen-AI controversy aside, Crazy Taxi: World Tour feels like classic arcade Sega - and it's an absolute blast Cabby fever. Crazy Taxi was not my favourite Dreamcast game (please don't ask me to choose between the triumphant rhythm triptych of Rez, Space Channel 5, and Samba de Amigo, however), but there's a specific bit of it that's forever seared into my brain: the giddy thrill of cresting over that one San-Francisco-inspired hill and barreling down toward the ocean, all while The Offspring's All I Want 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah'ed me into a state of gaming nirvana. As a moment, it's the kind of perfect melding of style and blissful arcade purity that seemed to define so much of Sega's Dreamcast-era output. And my recent half-hour hands-on with the upcoming Crazy Taxi: World Tour at Gamescom suggests the original's 90s skate-punk spirit and taut arcade thrills are - if perhaps not equal - alive and well in this, Sega's long-awaited revival.
Nintendo is hosting two Directs in the coming days, and it’s pretty much all I’ve been thinking about since the announcement. On Tuesday, September 8, it’s The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, followed by a more general Nintendo Direct on Wednesday, September 9. Twilight Princess on Nintendo Switch Online Speaking of NSO, it bothers me more than it should that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is the only 3D Zelda game that’s not playable in some form on Switch 2. Ultimate noticeably hasn’t received a Switch 2 performance patch like Super Mario Odyssey, the open-world Zeldas, and plenty of other best-selling Switch 1 games, and combined with the fact that a new Smash game almost always hits within the first two years of a new Nintendo console, it feels like a prime candidate for a Switch 2 Edition.” And, after spending the last year declaring it to be too soon for 3D Mario in the wake of Donkey Kong Bananza – another 3D mascot platformer from much of the same team as 3D Mario – I now think we’re entering the window where we could see the plumber show up any time.

Inside Tencent's long-term strategy: live service, AI tools, and evergreen titles "I think people should just not be afraid of AI" Many column inches have been spent questioning the wisdom of focusing on live-service. Sony gambled and lost, as did many other companies chasing the dream of steady recurring revenues, while firms like Capcom that stuck to the traditional path have emerged relatively unscathed. That includes Miniclip, Sumo Digital, Funcom, Fat Shark, Sharkmob, 10 Chambers, and Stunlock Studios in Europe, as well as Digital Extremes in North America and Grinding Gear Games in New Zealand. But there's a reason that the trailer for this feature is filled with comments like "it’s like Xbox One all over again," "they've gone full Xbox One," and "hey Don Mattrick is that really you?" When the Xbox One was unveiled in 2013, it was presented not as a game console, but as an all-in-one home entertainment box, which would work as a sort of souped-up DVR that would integrate with cable subscriptions.

These days, you're looking at around $100 for an original "fat" model or up to $120 for the slim model, typically with a controller and the cords, on eBay in the US, while the UK site has listings for under £30. Therefore, I would advise spending a little more on something like a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 or beefier, like the Retroid Pocket 5 or Mangmi Pocket Max, as you'll then have room to play with x2 or x3 scaling.
