Masahiro Sakurai revealed that the Game Designers Award won’t return to the Japan Game Awards, as he has failed to find an adequate replacement to take up his mantle. The Game of the Year Division of the Japan Game Awards took place yesterday, September 14, recognizing the best and brightest in Japanese game development. Masahiro Sakurai, creator of Kirby and Super Smash Bros., founded the Game Designers Award in 2010. We always need new discoveries and innovations to keep the industry fresh and alive." A second translator noted that Sakurai said he hopes players will “keep being interested in creative games even after the award is gone.” Winners of the Game Designer Award over the last three years were Sad Owl Studios’ Viewfinder, Odd Meter’s Indika, and RPG Time: The Legend of Wright.
The Witcher 3's story director says an ideal quest is 'constructed in such a way that the player puts the controller away, stands up, and starts walking' "Then [the player] goes back, and then the player picks one of the choices." The Witcher 3, being one of the best RPGs of its era, naturally has a lot of very good quests—quests with weighty, significant choices that give you pause to think. In speaking with PC Gamer's Joshua Wolens, story director Marcin Blacha says that pause is a sign that he and his team have done something right in a story choice. "First of all, the choice has to make you think," Blacha says, "So it cannot be obvious. So I can promise that you will have both in Songs of the Past, and sometimes you will regret [your choice] and you will need to load the game to repeat your choice." The developers of Fable are confident that they have stuck the landing when it comes to the ending of the upcoming RPG. The Fable series is home to some fairly beloved games when people get past the perhaps overhyped pre-release comments about everything you can do in them, with Fable 2 generally being the favorite of many. However, Fable 2 simultaneously has one of the worst endings ever put to a game. Latest Videos FromGamesRadar+ "It's easy to look at industry metrics saying 100% of people start a game and only 25% finish, and decide not to invest heavily in the finale," Fulton explains, adding: "We relentlessly pursued quality here." What that ending is remains to be seen when the game releases next February, but Fulton teases that "in great Fable fashion, it culminates in a choice that really challenges you to think about who you are, with a real personal cost to weigh against the outcome." Amid relentless layoffs at Xbox, Fable lead says "so many people" at the company see the RPG as "vital to the DNA of the platform," which "protected us over a long development cycle."
Why switching main characters for your game's sequel might be a mistake IP consultant Christian Fonnesbech thinks games like Control Resonant and God of War Laufey are taking a big risk Christian Fonnesbech is a well-known name in the North European games industry. He was previously head of IP development at Nordisk Film Games, but in 2019 he founded Leverage in Copenhagen to help game studios develop their IP. What he can say is that among many others, he has worked with the teams behind Dead Island, Metro, Conan Exiles, Dune Awakening, Exoborne, and the Dark Pictures Anthology – although not necessarily on those games. Business-wise, I'm not so sure." Hades 2 is far from the only big-name to switch main characters: the upcoming titles Control Resonant, God of War Laufey, and The Witcher 4 are all changing their leads.
Those years of Valve’s benign neglect of VR make the imminent release of the $1,059 Steam Frame—which starts taking reservations today—more than a little surprising. The Frame even sports fancy extras like eye-tracking for effective foveated rendering in the center of your vision and an SD card slot for expanded storage (you can also splurge for a $1,299 Frame version that upgrades the internal storage from 256GB to 1TB). But the relatively weak Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor in the Frame means the games are limited to relatively undemanding 2D titles or older 3D titles (Portal 2, anyone?) Even a game like Returnal, which can hit a “Playable” 30 fps on the aging Steam Deck, managed a paltry 9 fps in benchmarks on the Frame at 720p “Low” graphics settings. Late to the party For most players, it’s hard to recommend the $1,049 Steam Frame over a $599 Meta Quest 3 (or even a $349 Quest 3S for the more budget-minded).
For nearly three weeks, I’ve been testing the limits of Valve’s Steam Frame, the company’s new wearable PC. At $1,059 with 256GB of storage or $1,299 for 1TB, it costs two to three times as much as similar-looking headsets from Meta. Steam Frame The Good - Lightweight and comfortable to wear - Precise wands double as a full gamepad - Plays so many games so many ways - Included 6GHz dongle allows short-range PC streaming even if you have questionable Wi-Fi The Bad - Doesn’t feel like a finished product - Crashes, bugs, other assorted instability and inconsistencies - Not enough performance for many standalone games - Short battery life of one to two hours - Some audible fan noise The Steam Frame is primarily a gaming device. You can effortlessly add color passthrough to the Frame if you want, by the way — Arcturus, which helped build the Frame’s entire vision system, is now selling a perfect-fit 5K60 10-bit HDR stereo camera for $150.

This is an IGN opinion piece from Matt Purslow, who has been there from day one for every PlayStation generation since the PS2. He loves the style of narrative single-player adventures that Sony's studios have historically championed. First announced during a Sony State of Play in early 2024, Physint was described as “a completely new 'Action Espionage' for the next-generation.” That specific wording, of course, is intended to evoke Metal Gear Solid, which sports the tagline “Tactical Espionage Action” across each of the series’ logos. Four of this generation’s major first-party exclusives – Ghost of Yotei, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok, and Horizon Forbidden West – are almost indistinguishable from their PS4 predecessors when it comes to how they play.
Goodwill Hunting: Consoles’ brand value and loyalty is being tested | Opinion When Sony and Microsoft need to get consumers on board for hugely expensive new hardware launches in the coming years, they’ll need every drop of goodwill they can muster. There’s a really important piece of context that looms behind every decision, every announcement, and every news story about PlayStation or Xbox at the moment. It’s a ticking clock; a countdown to the moment when Sony and Microsoft are going to have to start talking about their next-generation hardware – and begin the process of convincing the world that an almost certainly astronomical price point isn’t a deal-breaker. Death Stranding was generally very well received critically, but the franchise was not a particularly big commercial hit; sequel title Death Stranding 2: On The Beach reportedly sold around 2 million copies.
