Inside Buckshot Roulette developer Mike Klubnika's terrifically nasty horror universe of post-Soviet malaise Atrocity exhibition. In Mike Klubnika's growing oeuvre of brilliantly deplorable games, the same elements tend to recur. Across three excellent games in almost as many years - 2023's Buckshot Roulette, 2025's S.p.l.i.t, and 2026's Machine Party - Klubnika has remixed each of these elements with design verve and stylistic aplomb. Klubnika's desktop PC, then, was both a creative instrument and portal into exotic worlds and taboo-feeling media: Klubnika remembers pirating the edgy top-down shooter Hotline Miami when he was 10 or 11 years old before discovering the music of Aphex Twin in one particularly strange level of the Half-Life multiplayer mod Sven Co-op.
With the recently released Control Resonant, Remedy Entertainment returns to its weird Control universe of teleporting toy ducks, nightmarish creatures, and explosive action, all of which is grounded by a deeply personal central story. But when considering its predecessor, Control, I was struck by just how much this sequel not only differs from the first game, but deliberately inverts or twists what players previously experienced--much as the central Big Bad does to the entire borough of Manhattan. Control Resonant begins with our protagonist Dylan, barefoot and in dire need of a shave, awakening from a seven-year coma. With his sister--the series' former main character, Jesse Faden--missing and Control's Oldest House now a crime scene of corpses, Dylan finally leaves the building he’s been imprisoned in for over two decades.
