Discord delays controversial age verification rollout, saying it "missed the mark" following community outcry "We know many of you believe the right answer is not to do this at all." Discord co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy has announced the company is delaying the global rollout of its controversial age verification requirements, admitting it "missed the mark". Earlier this month, Discord revealed it would begin a "phased global rollout" of a new update in March that would give all new and existing users a "teen-appropriate experience" by default. Essentially, this meant many of the platform's features - including access to age-gated channels, servers, app commands, and "sensitive content" - would be heavily restricted unless users had been age verified. This, the company said at the time, would enable it to give "teens strong protections while allowing verified adults flexibility".
How recent laws impact game design, from in-game chat to notifications How game developers can stay on the right side of current and upcoming legislation affecting the industry 2026 is already proving to be the year when the reality of video game regulation hits home for the industry. Games studios are suddenly confronting a host of new and impending regulations, and it can feel an impossible task to sift through the alphabetti spaghetti of laws, rules and guidelines (OSA, DMCCA, DFA, DSA, AI Act, CPC…) in order to know what this actually means for the day-to-day practicalities of developing and releasing games. Kabam, Nexters and My.Games recently fell afoul of this in the UK and Netherlands with Marvel Contest of Champions, Hero Wars: Alliance RPG and Rush Royale: Tower Defense TD. Kennedy has crossed the threshold into middle age in Resident Evil Requiem, but like the series he’s become the poster child for, he’s aged like a damn fine wine. The ninth entry in Capcom’s zombie-slaying series is a tale of two halves. Unlike 2021’s Village, which attempted to make survival and action-horror work in a single campaign, Capcom decouples the styles and hands them off to Requiem’s dual heroes. For Leon, it’s a fitting exploration of the guilt he’s carried with him since the original Raccoon City incident, making Requiem feel more like a direct sequel to Resident Evil 2 than 3 ever was.
I would not assume that it'd be an easy task to encapsulate 30 years of storytelling and several gameplay styles across dozens of releases, but Capcom was up to the task when it comes to Resident Evil Requiem . With Requiem , Capcom is set to close out an entire era of the franchise while highlighting the variety offered over the past few decades. From humble PS1 beginnings to third-person action, then first-person fear, Resident Evil Requiem pays homage to them all in an exceptional display of everything that makes the franchise so great for those who love it dearly. Cower in fear Screenshot by Destructoid The ninth mainline title in the Resident Evil series stars co-protagonists, the first of which is series newcomer Grace Ashcroft.

Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model has landed on Netflix, taking a look back at the long-running competition show’s controversial past, including an incident involving former contestant Shandi Sullivan. Like many pop culture moments of the ‘00s, America’s Next Top Model has been looked back on with a collective side eye, and the new documentary series wastes no time in delving into the show’s most uncomfortable moments. The opening scene alone is host Tyra Banks’ infamous Cycle 4 meltdown, when she screamed “we were all rooting for you” at contestant Tiffany Richardson. Then there’s the incident involving Cycle 2 star Shandi Sullivan, who appears in Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model to give her side of the story.
Good news, UK Discord users, we're part of a Peter Thiel-linked data collection "experiment" "The information you submit will be temporarily stored for up to 7 days..." Discord have belatedly confirmed that they're working with Persona, an identity detection firm backed by a fund directed by Palantir chairman Peter Thiel, as part of Discord's new global age verification system rollout. The collaboration is described as an "experiment" involving people in the UK specifically, whereby Persona will store user information on their servers for up to seven days. Always good when your personal data forms part of an "experiment", isn't it? As PCGamer note, Persona's lead investors during two recent rounds of venture capital funding were The Founders Fund, who valued them at $1.5 billion in 2021.
Discord advises UK users that they "may be part of an experiment" where instead of their age verification data never leaving their phone, it will now actually leave their phone "All details are blurred except your photo and date of birth, so only what's truly needed for age verification is used." UK Discord users have raised concerns about the company's new age verification processes, claiming that while it had originally promised that "video selfies submitted for facial age estimation will never leave a user's device", a change in service provider allegedly now suggests otherwise. Discord announced its new "teen-by-default" approach to its platform last week, revealing that age-verification will be a mandatory requirement for all users around the globe in order to access certain settings, channels, and "sensitive content." Beginning in early March, Discord will implement a "phased global rollout" of a new update designed to give all new and existing users worldwide a "teen-appropriate experience" by default. Once live, users will be required to undergo age verification - either via facial age estimation or by submitting a form of identification - in order to access certain features. Building on changes previously rolled out to users in Australia and the UK, without age verification, users will be unable to bypass sensitive content filters, and will not be able to access age-gated channels, servers, or app commands, speak on Discord server stages, or access messages sent to their inbox from people they do not know.
Discord promise they won't force everybody to do a face scan following outrage at new age verification policy Also discuss their machine learning "age inference" system Social media company Discord are trying their best to reassure people irked by the recently announced global rollout of some new age verification measures, which include face scans and a background “age inference” system for determining whether the user is an adult. Amid predictable backlash against potential privacy violations – see, for context, last year’s cybersecurity breach that saw a hacker get hold of personal information used for age verification via one of Discord’s customer service partners – Discord are promising that they won’t require every user to complete a face scan or upload some ID, and that the “vast majority of people can continue using Discord exactly as they do today”. Albeit, mostly because “the majority of Discord users don’t access age restricted content”. “For the majority of adult users, we will be able to confirm your age group using information we already have,” the platform holders write in a clarification on their official blog.

I hope it's not true because it would be depressing to wait for over a year for Quake 2 and Ultima Online: 1994 Doom, Doom 2 1995 Abuse, SimCity 1996 Inner Worlds, Quake 1997 Nothing? I thought that LinCycles from 1996 was a commercial title, but a comment from the author is odd, and I have some doubts: https://happypenguin.altervista.org/sheet.php?gameid=57 Quoting: HamishOn a separate but related tangent, whether Call to Power was the first or second Linux game to be sold at retail is somewhat muddied by the fact that Macmillan Publishing announced their boxed Quake releases on May 13, 1999 (my fifth birthday) while Call to Power did not start shipping until May 15, 1999 despite being announced months earlier.I don't know it.
Discord have announced that beginning in March, they're starting a global rollout of forced age verification to access all features of the platform. Announced in an official blog post today, the Discord team noted that all accounts will end up as teens by default, with various restrictions in place, unless you go through manual age verification processes. Last edited by doragasu on 9 Feb 2026 at 4:31 pm UTC Gamers should never have abandoned mumble which is self hostable, open source and IMO superior for the purposes of simple accessible game chat. Last edited by Kimyrielle on 9 Feb 2026 at 4:44 pm UTC Sure do hate that so many communities decided they were too good for classic forums and decided to centralize all their valuable information on a non-open internet searchable IRC.
A month after introducing mandatory facial verification for access to chats on its platform, Roblox says 45% of its daily active users have undergone age checks as of January 31. Roblox’s launch of age checks followed a wave of lawsuits over child safety, including ones from the attorneys general of Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana. There are six age groups: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 plus. Of the 45% of users who have undergone age checks, 35% are under 13, 38% are between the ages of 13 and 17, and 27% are over 18.
