Plenty of things are terrifying about a man in a boiler suit creeping up behind you, but it's hard to be scared of Halloween: The Game's Michael Myers when he strolls around the neighborhood with all the urgency of a retiree on a golf course. Admittedly, my early experience with the latest asymmetrical survival horror based on a famous movie came without the obligatory day one patch, so everything I’ve seen so far comes with that giant, flashing caveat. But after several hours, my immediate reaction is that this just isn't ready. I had a great time with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's spin on asymmetrical horror back in 2023, but within days it was clear no one wanted to play as Leatherface because it was so much easier — and considerably more fun — to clock up XP and escape as a survivor.
The original Metroid and Castlevania both turn 40 years old this fall. As the two series most responsible for creating the “metroidvania,” we’re taking this occasion to take a comprehensive view of the popular genre. Within the vast and overcrowded Steam store, there are over 3,100 titles with the “metroidvania” tag . The 2009 release of Shadow Complex served as a nice throwback to a then-abandoned genre, and a 2010s resurgence of metroidvanias occurred in indie scenes through games like Axiom Verge, Hollow Knight, Ori, Dead Cells, and many others.
Sony has 'zero understanding for what their customers want' says gaming preservation group With Sony ending disc support, many fear what that means for game preservation going forward. PC gamers may have watched physical game discs disappear years ago, but there's a battleground happening over in console land right now. And it might only be getting more contentious as time ticks on. Just last month, we documented Does It Play's reporting, showing that 34% of physical PS5 games and 50% of tested Xbox Series X games don't fully work without a download first.
