Xbox staff among up to 60,000 Microsoft employees offered voluntary exit The offer spans staff in the US, UK, Canada, and India Microsoft is offering voluntary exit to employees. In a memo, EVP chief people officer Amy Coleman announced the time-limited Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) is open to "eligible staff in participating teams" in the US, UK, Canada, and India at level 70 and below. The Verge reports that up to 60,000 employees could be eligible, and sources familiar with the situation say staff in numerous teams are eligible, including "AI experiences, Copilot, CoreAI, Windows + Devices, Xbox, finance, and human resources." Microsoft's cloud + AI, MicrosoftAI teams, and corporate, external, and legal affairs are "partially participating," the sources say. "The Voluntary Exit Offer is new for us," Coleman wrote.
With Xbox cuts not done, Microsoft offer voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 workers across the company in latest attempt to get rid of staff That's around a quarter of Microsoft’s total workforce, according to reports Staff at Microsoft continue to recieve emails they'd probably rather not be getting. After telling some the other week of plans to mandate four days in the office starting in February and presiding over multiple rounds of layoffs at their gaming division Xbox, Microsoft are now offering volutary buyouts to 60,000, roughly 25% of their overall headcount. Business Insider report that staff in the US, Canada, India, and the UK, but that not every team within the company is on the eligibility list. There's no indication at current as to whether Xbox will be affected, with exec Matt Booty having noted when announcing September's layoffs that the division was "roughly three-quarters of the way" through efforts to get rid of 3200 staff in total.
"It was a pretty harrowing three months" – Undead Labs head Philip Holt on what happened after Xbox cut the studio loose The CEO explains what the new employee-owned structure looks like, why State of Decay 3 has taken so long, and how the studio is embracing co-development Back in July, Xbox announced plans to divest five studios. Among them was State of Decay maker Undead Labs, which Microsoft had acquired back in 2018. But yeah, I think it's highly unlikely that we spend as much time on the next game as we did on State of Decay 3." Undead Labs currently has around 8,000 players testing out State of Decay 3, and is working on a post-launch roadmap. State of Decay 3 is being birthed into an uncertain world where $1,000+ consoles look set to be the new normal, and Holt is aware that many players will stick with older, less-powerful consoles and PCs, so the studio is ensuring that "our minimum spec is as broad as we can make it".
'This is the bit where the comet hits the earth and the dinosaurs die:' Tim Sweeney revisits scathing 26-year-old eulogy for beloved studio Looking Glass Sweeney's assessment of the games industry in the 2000s hits close to home today, but I still hold out hope that the future can be better. On May 24, 2000, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney shared a public statement (the specific platform or venue eludes me) on the closure of Looking Glass Studios, a canonical PC gaming institution and originator of the immersive sim genre (maybe don't call it that, though). The statement was resurfaced by immsim enthusiast account Sinnoware on Twitter, and Sweeney has since responded. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Ted has been thinking about PC games and bothering anyone who would listen with his thoughts on them ever since he booted up his sister's copy of Neverwinter Nights on the family computer.

Nevertheless, we're talking about a console around the same size as a Nintendo Switch that runs physical cartridges in the year 2026, and I know many of you would take that over whatever Xbox Project Helix will do for upwards of $1,800. The main issue I have is that if Fortune's report that the next-gen console could cost "between $1,200 and $1,800" holds true, then many players won't even have a next generation to consider. You could instead opt for the far cheaper Super Pocket since it will run all the same games for $69.99, or you could even get a bit fancy and invest in an Evercade Alpha, a bartop arcade machine that works as its own standalone console (a bit like a modern-day Vectrex).
Automation and factory-building games have become pretty popular over the past few years, with Coffee Stain Studios' Satisfactory being one of the stars of the genre. I have always admired the sprawling conveyor belts and mega structures of the factory-building powerhouse from a comfortable distance, dipping my toe into the waters with messy (but kind of functional) factories of my own. Soon, factory builders will have a whole new way to build out their process, as Mood Publishing, the same publisher behind Hitman: The Board Game, is looking to bring the beloved factory sim to your tabletop with Satisfactory: The Board Game and the launch of their latest crowdfunding campaign over on Gamefound. We were sent an early prototype copy to check out, in addition to playing a demo with the game’s designer, David Thor Fjalarsson, to see if a tabletop game can capture and refine the Satisfactory experience down to the size of a kitchen table-sized factory.
Earlier this year, SEGA revealed a life-size Sonic statue that contained the hedgehog's "DNA" (yes, really), housed in the Shibuya SEGA store. In the months since, a trip to Tokyo has been the only way you could get a look at the weird creation, but you'll soon be able to have one in your home... if you can stomach the insane price tag. As brought to our attention by Dexerto , the "DNA"-filled statue will soon be available as a smaller figurine for an eye-watering ¥3,300,000 (which is around $20,000 or £16,000, for those wondering).

Nintendo showed roughly 20 minutes of footage from the Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct this morning. Producer Eiji Aonuma said this project is largely a faithful remake of the N64 classic, reborn on Switch 2 with modern controls and a strong focus on detail. Here are 40 changes I saw when comparing Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 to the N64 version, from things as large as the art style all the way to small menu changes and UI differences. A Special Edition Console and Controller On October 29, one week before Ocarina of Time's launch on November 5, Nintendo is releasing the first special edition Switch 2 console themed around The Legend of Zelda's 40th anniversary.
Guild Wars 3's approach to combat and movement is like nothing I've ever seen in an MMO before: 'One of our big goals when we make a new game in the Guild Wars franchise is to set out and try new things' Wall running, mantling, aerial attacks, multiplayer combos—it's a lot of new stuff. There are few things as exciting as the prospect of a new MMO. Having seen Guild Wars 3 in action at Gamescom, and spoken to game director Colin Johanson and lead combat designer Kevin Stocker, my excitement has been justified. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Fraser is the UK online editor and has actually met The Internet in person.

One of the world's biggest gaming shows, Gamescom , is now underway in Cologne, Germany, and hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend. The organizers sold out the entire 233,000 square meter exhibition floor at the Koelnmesse exhibition center, with more than 1,600 exhibitors signing up to show off their games and products. It might not be the world's largest gaming event, as that title belongs to ChinaJoy, which had more than 438,000 attendees this year. That increased to 320,000 in 2023, 335,000 in 2024 and 357,000 visitors from 128 countries in 2025.
Can the Epic Games Store turn things around? 'I don't see how they can recover at this point,' says Newzoo analyst Adding features to the storefront and making its launcher run more smoothly might be too little, too late. Back in February Epic Games told us about its plan to overhaul the Epic launcher, with an update in June mentioning it would start up five times faster on average. While Epic's own games and those of games that launched as exclusives like Borderlands 3 have a history of showing up in Fortnite, now you look at the current season and see Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Mega Man have joined the roster alongside Sora from Kingdom Hearts and Joker from Persona 5.

"People want to play arcade racers again" – How the developer of Wreckreation went from a company-wide redundancy notice to working on a sequel Fiona Sperry, the former head of Burnout maker Criterion, explains what happened to Three Fields Entertainment When we last heard from Fiona Sperry in December, she had just put the entire team at Three Fields Entertainment on notice of redundancy. The studio had released driving game Wreckreation barely six weeks previously. But in a LinkedIn post, Sperry – who was previously studio head at Burnout maker Criterion – explained that Three Fields would "not see revenue from game sales for the foreseeable future," and that without "the enthusiasm or financial support from our publisher [THQ Nordic] to continue development, we simply cannot sustain the studio in its current form." Eight months later, a lot has changed. "So in order for us to be able to secure the future for our staff and not end up back in a redundancy position, making a new game was the only path forward." Starting a new game was inevitable, it being another Wreckreation was decidedly less so: Video Game Insights estimates that Wreckreation sold around 32,500 units across Steam.
How recent laws impact game design, from in-game chat to notifications How game developers can stay on the right side of current and upcoming legislation affecting the industry 2026 is already proving to be the year when the reality of video game regulation hits home for the industry. Games studios are suddenly confronting a host of new and impending regulations, and it can feel an impossible task to sift through the alphabetti spaghetti of laws, rules and guidelines (OSA, DMCCA, DFA, DSA, AI Act, CPC…) in order to know what this actually means for the day-to-day practicalities of developing and releasing games. Kabam, Nexters and My.Games recently fell afoul of this in the UK and Netherlands with Marvel Contest of Champions, Hero Wars: Alliance RPG and Rush Royale: Tower Defense TD.
