Why private equity acquisitions like the one that just claimed BioWare are so dreaded BioWare is just the latest casualty in a long history of private equity carnage. The LGBTQ-inclusive developer of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, which hadn't managed to transmute development mayhem into sales success and whose games aren't ideal environments for loot boxes, did not seem likely to be admired by its new owners, Saudi Arabia and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner. A report using S&P data found that in 2024, private equity-backed companies accounted for more than 10% of all corporate bankruptcies and over 50% of bankruptcies with over $500 million in liabilities—but "despite their role in precipitating bankruptcies, private equity firms often emerge financially unscathed." "There have certainly been instances of this—the 2017 bankruptcy of Toys 'R' Us is top of mind for me," Venema said. And Dell, Venema said, went from a $25 billion buyout in 2013 to being valued today at nearly $100 billion after going public again in 2018.
Splash Damage acquired this studio just 3 months after laying off a bunch of people—now it's laying them off, too An undisclosed number of employees have been let go from the studio behind survival game Scum. The closure of BioWare and layoff of roughly 400 people at Electronic Arts is being rightly excoriated as an example of the corrosive effects of capital on pretty much everything good. So, to recap: - Splash Damage gets bought up by private equity - Splash Damage lays off employees - Splash Damage, backed by private equity, acquires Gamepires - Gamepires lays off employees The number of people put out of work wasn't revealed, but in response to our inquiry Splash Damage issued the following statement: "Gamepires is part of Splash Damage Group and has reduced the size of its team in response to challenging market conditions and to support the studio’s long-term sustainability. "Development of SCUM will continue, and we’ll keep working with our colleagues at Gamepires to support updates and new content." 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80.
