EA has officially been sold, and with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund now the majority shareholder in the video game company, talks are reportedly underway to merge it with Savvy Games Group, the gaming and esports holding company that's also owned by the PIF. Speaking to Bloomberg , sources said the PIF is aiming to foster "better coordination" between its gaming assets, and the merger could happen once it completes its plan to acquire Chinese mobile gaming company Moonton, a deal valued at $6 billion. The PIF also owns Pokemon Go developer Scopely and game publisher SNK, and it holds sizable stakes in video game publishers like Nintendo, Capcom, and Koei Tecmo. The PIF is the majority owner of EA Games, with a 93.4% stake in the company, while its partners Silver Lake and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner's private equity firm, Affinity Partners, own 5.5% and 1.1% of the company, respectively.
EA's new Saudi Arabia owners are reportedly looking to shuffle the publisher into a new gaming giant that would combine and spearhead the country's gaming strategy. Bloomberg reports that early considerations at Saudi Arabia, the supermajority owner in a new consortium of investors that took EA private in a deal that closed August 4, would see EA merged with Savvy Games, a group established by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) in 2021 as the bedrock for yet more billions in investment. Latest Videos FromGamesRadar+ The report stresses that final decisions have not been made and are unlikely to come until, at the very least, Savvy can close the $6 billion acquisition of Chinese studio and Mobile Legends maker Moonton. On the Public Investment Fund website, Savvy Games' stated goal is "achieving leadership status in the games industry by 2030." "Savvy has been growing rapidly since being established, with ESL FACEIT Group, the world’s #1 esports company, and Scopely, the #1 mobile games company in the United States, under its portfolio," it adds.
Stop Killing Games has joined a lawsuit against Sony's move to digital-only sales: 'You won't have any choice at all' Sony-only. Sony's decision to stop selling physical disks for its games makes a certain kind of sense from a mercilessly realist point of view—I'd be a hypocrite if I, a person with the majority of my games on one platform (Steam), shook my fist and wept for the end of physical media. Such is the argument of one Dutch consumer group that's currently suing Sony for their proposed changes, stating last month that "no discs means no second-hand market and no alternative to the PlayStation Store, so from 2028, Sony alone decides what a game costs and even how long you are allowed to use it." At the very least, despite Steam's monolithic popularity, Valve's not capable of forcing anybody to use it. The blockbuster buyout of Electronic Arts has been completed, with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund taking ownership of the gaming giant in the biggest leveraged buyout (LBO) in the history of commerce . The $55 billion deal includes billions in debt for EA, which has prompted fears of massive cost-cutting with projected layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations. EA stockholders will get $210/share as part of the buyout, which represents a tidy 25% premium over the company's stock price on the last full day before the deal came to light and subsequently sent the price soaring. EA's $55 billion sale is not the biggest-ever gaming acquisition, as that record belongs to Microsoft, which paid $75.4 billion to acquire Activision Blizzard.
