It feels like Xbox has been in a permanent state of turmoil for at least two years now, and this week is no different. Microsoft cut 268 jobs across its gaming division this week, shuffled major studios and franchises around, and continued its Xbox “reset.” The Xbox reset gets ugly Another round of cuts leaves big questions over the future of Game Pass and the Xbox platform. Layoffs have become a way of life for Xbox employees, after Microsoft started cutting thousands in early 2024 and hasn’t slowed down. Xbox lost $300 million in Call of Duty sales because of its addition to Game Pass, prompting Microsoft to quickly reverse course on bringing new entries in the franchise to the service.
Obsidian's "creative identity and strengths" will remain intact, promises Bethesda, as it takes control of Fallout: New Vegas studio "This structure supports the franchise-led model we've been strengthening" Xbox's massive and still ongoing reorganisation has pushed Obsidian Entertainment under Bethesda's umbrella. Despite the quite drastic corporate shakeup, Bethesda's president is promising folks the iconic RPG developer will hold onto its "creative identity." Xbox's so-called "reset" kicked off earlier this year with the console maker laying off 1,600 workers and parting ways with five first-party developers. This week's continuation saw a further 268 roles cut across the division, and plenty of studios have moved around Microsoft's various gaming divisions as a result.
