In 2023, an anonymous modder released one of the best horror games of the decade, and they still haven't broken character MyHouse.wad barrages players with horrible things they've never experienced in a game before. For a lot of people, the appeal of horror is being surprised and disturbed by something they've never seen before. In recent years, I've sourced this rare feeling from movies like Obsession, where the gender dynamics of that story made it feel a bit dangerous, or Speak No Evil, which has one of the most shocking and nihilistic endings that I can recall. I even find that freshness in a modern classic like Pearl, which isn't really scary, but contrasts a technicolour old Hollywood style with a singularly unsettling Mia Goth performance to great effect.
Modern Warfare 4 arrives at a strange time for the Call of Duty series. Despite being a solid multiplayer shooter, 2025’s Black Ops 7 became the franchise’s lowest-selling game since 2008’s World at War in the US. Activision itself recently admitted that following up 2024’s Black Ops 6 with another Black Ops, after doing the same with Modern Warfare 2 and 3, didn’t offer the variety that fans wanted. Verdict Modern Warfare 4 stands alongside Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare 2 (2009) as one of the most complete Call of Duty titles to date.
The Philippines is far from the first country you think of when it comes to the video game industry, but it’s quietly evolved into a budding hub for game development. The island nation initially had a tenuous relationship with the medium, as for a brief period of time in the 1980s, video games were banned in the country. Now, the Philippines has a reputation for its thriving esports scene , and the output of quality Filipino-made games is gradually rising. To observe Filipino American History Month, we’re looking at several recent games made in the Philippines, many of which include distinctly Filipino cultural elements showcased for players around the world.
Our Verdict Modern Warfare 4 is the bar that this series should regularly aspire to, and a reminder that Call of Duty benefits when it actually tries to change. These back-to-back games, shouldered by Treyarch, Sledgehammer, and Raven, had cracks and compromises that suggested the Call of Duty machine just can't keep up with both "good" and "fast" anymore.

Modern Warfare 4 is live with Call of Duty's new DMZ extraction mode, where scavenging guns, equipment, and resources is crucial to survival. Coen's mortal family survive, but he never sees them again Without the vampire's blood as protection, the Black Plague returns to Vale Sangora With no replacement for Brencis, Vale Sangora descends into lawlessness – leaving the manumit rebels to defend the valley Lacra continues her work with the Augurs Xanthe continues to live with her daughter – but I'm pretty damn miffed, as she goes back on our deal and returns to killing young women The nun's convent from part one remains cursed (oops) As for Coen, he learns to live with his vampirism – a slight understatement, given I've spent a month forcing gallons of blood down his throat.

Filthy environments, terrifyingly warped monsters, psychological horror, and a positively miserable experience? Yep, Silent Hill: Townfall is a Silent Hill game, all right. With its innovative approach to familiar series staples, it feels like a game that can please both newcomers and veterans to the franchise. Silent Hill: Townfall will come out on September 24, 2026 for the PS5 and Windows PC.
I had only played about an hour of Virtue and a Sledgehammer prior to sitting down to speak with a few of the game's devs. The third-person, narrative-driven exploration game is essentially a walking simulator, in that you methodically explore a space and slowly uncover a story. You learn about what's happening by swinging a sledgehammer, which can shatter buildings, break open painful memories, crush generators, and destroy the androids that each house the digitized ghost of a person who was once one of your neighbors. How?'" According to the developers, the demo I played only included the first 75% or so of the full game, so I still haven't seen what kind of concluding statement Virtue and a Sledgehammer ultimately makes, or how the game's ending will react to the choices I've made.
If life is but a dream, then The Blood of Dawnwalker's Home Sweet Home mission must be a nightmare. I stumble into it as a bit of an afterthought, having fought my way into the alchemist's tower while investigating the clay-baked gargoyles plaguing the city of Svartrau. But instead of leaving to show Marat the alchemist's notes, as per my next objective, I head up the spiral staircase and ascend further into the tower. After 894 hours in Slay the Spire 2, these are our 12 strongest opinions Our three editors have hundreds of runs in Slay the Spire 2. - Evan Lahti - Strategic Director, PC Gamer: 426 hours, 441 runs as Silent, Monster Train 2 evangelist, 30-minute wins with every character, plays fast and loose - Harvey Randall - Staff Writer, PC Gamer: 212 hours, won at least once at A10 on every character - Austin Wood - Senior Writer, GamesRadar+: 256 hours, won an A10 streak of every character, one by one Act 1 is too punishing and too boring The easiest way to clear Act 1 reliably is just to rest at every opportunity. —Evan Lahti, Strategic Director Monster Train 2 is a better game Hi, millions of Slay the Spire 2 players, especially those of you who are willing to watch 1.5-hour applied epistemology and machine learning lectures on YouTube to get better at this simple game—you should be playing Monster Train 2. Compared to Spire's basic actions of attack, block, draw/discard, potion, the list of levers I can pull in Monster Train 2 is pleasantly irregular: - The deployment phase: where and when to play a unit matters - Sacrificing your own units - Repositioning units or enemies for offensive or defensive purposes, or to trigger effects - Using room cards to buff, debuff, or just microwave your problems away - Sacrificing Pyre (train) HP for gold or other benefits - Dazing enemies, or even your own units in some edge cases - Farming kills on permascaling weapons to prepare for later fights (it's kind of wild that Slay the Spire 2 features no permascaling, other than HP, I guess?) - As Pyreborne, making cost-benefit decisions about generating eggs, a clan-specific currency I haven't even mentioned Soul Savior, the mode introduced earlier this year that puts every system in the game on steroids.

What we've been playing - "I don't think this is this game's biggest problem" A few of the things that have us hooked this week. 11th September Hello and welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little about the games we've been playing. This week, Kelsey takes solace in assassination; Connor revisits a foundational Korean MMO; Chris has some more thoughts about Marvel's Wolverine; Bertie tries to get to the end of Big Walk and then realises he doesn't want to get to the end of Big Walk at all; and Marie plays Spyro again, because why not? Hitman World of Assassination, Switch 2 It's been a whirlwind few weeks so I've decided to sit down with a comfort game of mine: Hitman World of Assassination.

Plenty of things are terrifying about a man in a boiler suit creeping up behind you, but it's hard to be scared of Halloween: The Game's Michael Myers when he strolls around the neighborhood with all the urgency of a retiree on a golf course. Admittedly, my early experience with the latest asymmetrical survival horror based on a famous movie came without the obligatory day one patch, so everything I’ve seen so far comes with that giant, flashing caveat. But after several hours, my immediate reaction is that this just isn't ready. I had a great time with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's spin on asymmetrical horror back in 2023, but within days it was clear no one wanted to play as Leatherface because it was so much easier — and considerably more fun — to clock up XP and escape as a survivor.
