As an OG Crazy Taxi lover, its new remake might just not be crazy enough Not ya ya ya ya ya, I fear. I've played just about every damn iteration of Crazy Taxi there is. My first exposure to it was the PlayStation 2 EyeToy version included in Sega Superstars, which involved me wildly gesticulating and yelling in order to get Axel's attention. Yes, for some reason you are the passenger in the EyeToy version of Crazy Taxi.
Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail's final story patch is exactly what the game needed, and has the 4-month wait for Evercold suddenly feeling a whole lot longer Setting the stage to perfection. The reception to Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail's story has been as much of a journey as the expansion itself. It was never going to be easy, being the first expansion to build a brand-new arc following a decade of excellent storytelling, and unfortunately it didn't quite land initially. Criticisms around its core narrative have largely abated over the last few patches, though, as we near the next expansion Evercold in January.
Riot MMO's future is 'incredibly bright' despite co-founder likening its development to the grail: 'Many a brave knight are going to die' Things are still chugging along over there, it seems. Despite a cloud of doom and gloom hanging over Riot's mysterious MMO in the wake of 2XKO's closure–including well-founded concerns from our own Harvey Randall—its co-founder seems confident in its ongoing development. At least, that's what I'm parsing from his relative non-answer when pressed about it during a panel at PAX West over the weekend. Marc Merrill dropped a mention of the MMO while answering a different question during the panel, which was immediately chased up by host Greg Miller with half-joking prompts for further morsels of information.
Riot co-founder doesn't think 2XKO was 'a mistake' but perhaps a tough sell: 'You're not just competing against games, you're competing against everything' The tag fighter failed to capture newbies and veterans alike. After years of development, a shaky launch, and layoffs a mere three weeks later, the inevitable came for Riot's tag fighter 2XKO in August: shutdown of future development after this year, and refunds for everyone who had made in-game purchases up to that point. In its announcement post, Riot admitted that it was unable to find the momentum to keep 2XKO sustainable, a sentiment that co-founder Marc Merrill echoed during a panel at PAX West this weekend. When asked about mistakes the developer has made over the years—while tangentially mentioning the tag fighter—Merill responded: "Well first of all, I wouldn't characterise 2XKO as a mistake." Merrill says that following a meeting with EVO founders and 2XKO developers Tom and Tony Cannon , he and fellow Riot co-founder Brandon Beck "thought that there were a lot of opportunities in and around the competitive scene; thought that there were going to be benefits to the free-to-play model; thought the League IP could be incredibly cool both for League players and players in the FGC.
In a sea of failed live service games, I'm shocked to see someone trying to make a MOBA Project Zeta is trying to crack a near-impenetrable market. Making a live service game these days feels like trying to shoot an arrow at a flea while blindfolded. Striking gold with a hot new shooter or other team-based multiplayer game with a quirky twist seems like an exercise in futility, but that isn't stopping developers and publishers from trying to be the next big thing. Personally, if I was trying to enter an already-volatile market, I'd probably be steering well clear of MOBAs.
Age Twisters is a simple yet charming spin on the co-op adventure that aims to feel like watching a Pixar movie The puzzles won't stump you, but Piccolo Studios says they're not supposed to. As I'm making my way through the beginning of two-player co-op adventure Age Twisters alongside the founders of developer Piccolo Studios, I'm told the goal was to create a game that evokes the same feelings as watching a Pixar movie with your child. Now I am admittedly sprogless, but it wasn't difficult to latch onto those similar fuzzy feelings of nostalgia and familial love even as I completed puzzles alongside a man I'd only met minutes prior. Age Twisters is the studio's attempt at a game like It Takes Two or Split Fiction, albeit much lower on the toughness scale—something which the developer itself admits, instead going for a game that's constantly evolving and different rather than outright difficult.
Crimson Desert's upcoming DLC decides it's The Sims now, I guess Charting the Unknown somehow adds even more stuff to the game that does everything. Crimson Desert is like the videogame version of a 6-in-1 shampoo—it does just about everything, and with its upcoming DLC Charting the Unknown, I guess that also includes The Sims. Today's State of Play showed off a trailer with what we can expect to see, and there's a lot. Some other bits I noticed include: - Running on water - Underwater traversal, including grabbing onto a shark like some sort of aquatic Uber - Both a traditional looking ship and something more steampunk-looking - Fellow Greymane Andrew cheffing it up in the castle - Some crazy laser-eyed mechanical cyclops monster The most surprising part of all of this, though?
PUBG's new spin-off game is 'faster, meaner, and more aggressive' with sword hands and 'a little bit of light cannibalism' "PUBG is deliberate and thoughtful and tactical. This is not that." PUBG remains one of Steam's most-played games, which makes it all the more surprising that PUBG Studios and publisher Krafton haven't made more attempts to milk it over the years. PUBG: DED NET might be the biggest yank of the udder to date though, revealing an entirely new spin-off roguelite FPS set in the '90s. And if you didn't know the game was set in the '90s, you sure will after the game's trailer beats you over the head with period-accurate vibes.

Where's the weirdest place you've heard videogame music? Why does hearing it in public places feel so… wrong? Welcome to Critical Hit, where I (or someone else on the PC Gamer team) celebrate and lament all things videogame music, audio design, and the ways our favourite games make our ears tingle. Videogame music is ridiculously good, a behemoth that encompasses just about every damn genre out there.
Marvel Tōkon's simple but effective combo trials are an elegant tutorial solution that I wish more fighting games had Make me use my noggin, please. The humble combo trial is a time-honoured tradition in fighting games. It's a quick and relatively easy way of trying out a new character, feeling out their general flow and kit in a low-pressure environment. They are, also, fundamentally useless.
Marvel Tōkon's first big PC patch has mostly fixed performance woes, though it hasn't done much for its Steam reviews Things are looking up, at least. Marvel Tōkon—the all-out 4v4 tag fighter from 2D fighting game veteran ArcSystem Works—didn't get off on the best foot with PC players. Forced PSN logins and frame drops that were leading to a whopping eight frames of rollback in online modes saw the game launch to "Mixed" reviews, before eventually tanking to "Mostly Negative" over the weekend. And while there's zero chance of the PSN stuff going away, ArcSys has at least been speedy about trying to tackle those pesky frame drops.
Stellar Blade boss completely misses the point of why people are upset with Blood Rain's AI slop video: 'The AI is not creating [Evie] from scratch' ShiftUp is marketing its Stellar Blade sequel with an AI-generated music video. Last week, developer ShiftUp released a video marketing its upcoming sequel Stellar Blade: Blood Rain. A so-called "music video" which was riddled with generative AI, from Evie's harrowing grin to a very rubbish song with cringeworthy robotic vocals. The video has garnered a whole bunch of backlash—from myself included—as people wondered why on earth a company raking in good gacha money (its other game, Nikke: Goddess of Victory, is a consistent high ranker on gacha revenue charts) felt the need to put out something so utterly devoid of soul.
Yoshi-P is looking into ways to make FF14's 5 expansions and hundreds of hours less daunting for new players As it stands, the game's an awful big commitment. Final Fantasy 14 may be an MMO, but it's certainly never sacrificed the series' talent for excellent storytelling. It's stuffed with incredible worldbuilding, a cherished cast of characters, and heart-wrenching story beats that'll get players shedding a tear from just hearing a few notes from a song that played during a cutscene. It is, however, also a story that requires hundreds of hours to experience the full breadth of its narrative—spread across A Realm Reborn and five meaty expansions, with a sixth one on the way.
How do you feel about AI videogame music? Does your music require the human touch? Like it or loathe it—and for the record, I am firmly in the latter camp–generative AI has continued to seep into every aspect of game development. What felt like the odd shovelware AI thumbnail here or generated texture there has transformed into "developers" parading around entirely vibe-coded videogames as if it's something to be celebrated, rather than looked upon with sheer horror at the willing dismantling of human creativity and spirit.
I thought Overwatch's new Arcade mode was a glitch, but it's actually a ridiculous cat-stuffed free-for-all where spamming 'meow' is mandatory Meow meow meeeooww.
