Originally slated for this year, At Fate's End has been delayed to 2027. And while I'm bummed that the next game from Spiritfarer studio Thunder Lotus is now months (maybe even a year) away, the new Steam demo that dropped alongside the delay announcement has been an excellent consolation prize. Having finished the one-hour slice of the upcoming action-adventure, I'm more convinced than ever that this game would have been a serious contender for everyone's Best Of lists this year had it managed to stick to its original release window. Like Spiritfarer, At Fate's End appears to combine an engrossing gameplay loop with an emotionally devastating story.
Long-time stealth-game players may be familiar with this scenario: Your character discovers a path to infiltrate a facility or an enemy camp, or the game instructs you on how to get the drop on an enemy, and what could have been a unique and thoughtfully designed environment ends up just being an area with patches of tall grass for you to crouch in. At the risk of summoning the Christopher Nolan criticism of "to identify the mechanism does not invalidate the mechanism," I have played video games long enough to grow tired of certain tropes, and this has become one of them. When I think about the dozens of hours I've spent crouched in tall grass across games, memories of Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel, multiple Legend of Zelda games, many Assassin's Creed titles, Ghost of Tsushima and Yotei, Death Stranding, League of Legends, Hitman, and Pokémon easily come to mind. Hiding in Tall Grass: A Brief History While gaming history can be a little unreliable on where tall grass stealth mechanics first showed up, it at least dates back to 2004's Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
The “hidden movement” genre of board games is one of my favorites and I still remember where I discovered this type of game. I was watching Wil Wheaton’s “Tabletop” series, when the game of the week was “Fury of Dracula”, a game where one person assumes the role of Dracula, spreading terror and attempting to grow his vampire forces around the globe, while the others are vampire hunters, try to track him down and drive a stake through his heart. Thankfully, at long last, the good folks at Avalon Hill have brought it back in a brand new 5th Edition, and fans around the world can once again hunt down dracula during their next board game night. For those familiar with either the Fantasy Flight Games’ 3rd or WizKids’ 4th editions, the 5th edition is largely the same but for everyone else, Fury of Dracula is a one-versus-many with one person playing as the count and up to four other players controlling the hunters.
The future of Cyberpunk 2077 was scary enough without thinking about being mowed down by cars moving like they've been shot out of a cannon. And yet, a modder has made this a reality, completely changing the experience of walking around Night City. This particular exercise in absurdity comes from Blurbs, a streamer who specializes in making ridiculous mods. For a session with CD Projekt's dystopian RPG, he decided to dial up the speed on every car to be "super sonic," and carnage ensued.
