Can the SideWinder Game Pad, Microsoft's first game controller, work on modern PCs? I bought three of them to find out The past and fiddly present of the Xbox controller's ancestor 1996 gave us two incredible gifts. The second, arguably more impactful on the course of human civilisation, was the Microsoft SideWinder Game Pad 1.0. Launched in 1995 with the 3D Pro and Standard joysticks, the hardware family would eventually comprise gamepads, racing wheels, a game voice device to talk with friends and vocally control your game, and a massive mouse with more buttons than my nana’s vest.
Can you name the horror games these deeply unpleasant bathrooms are from? Bring holy water and Clorox wipes The second scariest thing about any haunted house is always the bathroom, with the first obviously being closet doors that are ever so slightly ajar. Public restrooms are scary in general, but homes always have some manner of bathroom cryptid playing peekaboo with the shower curtain, and I can't handle that. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Civilization 7's game changing update was 'personally challenging' for its creative director, as being able to play as a single faction 'wasn't part of the original vision' The development and release of Civilization 7 has been a rollercoaster for both fans of the series and developer Firaxis. The most recent entry in the long-running 4X series shipped with an age-transition mechanic where players would switch between civilisations at multiple points during a game. Earlier this year, Firaxis introduced an update to Civilization 7 that made age transitions optional and reimplemented the traditional, single-civ mode of play. "So we’ve been working ever since to keep putting in things that will surprise and delight our new audience, really re-engage our existing older audience and have them take a second look." 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Rick has been fascinated by PC gaming since he was seven years old, when he used to sneak into his dad's home office for covert sessions of Doom.
Award-winning sci-fi author NK Jemisin joins BioWare's mourners and scorns a broken industry for killing geese that 'laid the golden eggs' "The [Mass Effect] and [Dragon Age] games were a literal inspiration." The death of BioWare has provoked a whole lot of tributes, memorialisation, and plain old nostalgia as all sorts of people come together to remember the bangers the erstwhile king of RPGs put out in its prime. CD Projekt Red, imsim founding father Warren Spector, and we here at PCG have all been trading BioWare memories (and sometimes lamenting the influence of EA, which acquired the studio back in 2007). But the BioWare classics were big enough bangers to transcend videogames in their influence.

When my party approached Redcliffe Village in Dragon Age: Origins, my reluctant sidekick Alistair stopped the party for a big confession about a secret he'd been keeping from me. I finally realized how massive and complex the story was, how many contingencies had been planned, written, and voice acted. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 | Critical Consensus After 2025's poorly received Black Ops 7, critics say Modern Warfare 4 is a return to form for the franchise Activision has a lot riding on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. IGN's Simon Cardy noted that Infinity Ward has "handled this challenge well" in his review-in-progress for the game's story campaign, resulting in "a genuinely exciting string of missions that are great when they focus on what is new, rather than getting bogged down in the past." Game Informer's Michael Murphy, who rated it 8.5/10, agreed: "MW4 arrives at a crossroads for the series, thanks in large part to the inconsistent quality of recent entries. With a shaky predecessor, Infinity Ward had a lot to repair and conclude, especially with 4 set to bookend the rebooted Modern Warfare series." MW4 is also the first CoD to launch on a Nintendo console since 2013, and Nintendo Life's Gavin Lane said the title does not disappoint in his 9/10 review, calling it "impressive". MW4 is a strong return to form that serves as a solid sendoff for the rebooted subseries." 007 First Light gets Switch 2 release date, with IO Interactive saying time for "optimisation and performance" was needed Form an orderly Q. The Switch 2 version of 007 First Light will be released 18th March, 2027, IO Interactive has announced. The game had originally been expected this summer but IOI announced a delay to an unspecific date in March roughly a month ago. "Since announcing additional development time to ensure the quality of experience players expect, IO Interactive has brought hands-on builds of 007 First Light to both gamescom and Tokyo Game Show, where players and press had their first opportunity to experience Bond's world running on Nintendo's hardware," the company said in a press release statement.
Epic throws shade at Steam, admits to vibe-coding the new Epic Games Launcher with AI "to be faster than the other guy" "Will it have some bugs? Yes." Epic Games isn't lifting its foot off the gen-AI pedal. The company behind Fortnite and Unreal Engine has now vibe-coded a new Epic Games Launcher in an attempt to outrun Steam, by far the most popular digital games marketplace on PC. In an online post, CEO Tim Sweeney also suggested the gen-AI pivot could seep into Unreal Engine, the widely-used game development tool behind everything from Gears of War: E-Day to Final Fantasy 7 Revelation: "The aim isn't to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to enable everyone here to build more and better stuff, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal." The Epic Games Store has long struggled to pull the vast majority of PC players away from Valve's Steam platform.
"Have you ever seen Napoleon Dynamite?" I'll admit it: When I sat down with former Blizzard developer Jeff Kaplan to discuss his legacy and what comes next, I hadn't anticipated being asked questions myself--especially ones pertaining to one of the early aughts' most iconic (and absurd) comedy films. Yet it took only 20 minutes until we reached this point--when discussing the tragedy of Uncle Rico felt like a both a natural and important conversation to have. Despite being a self-proclaimed introvert, it's easy to see how the World of Warcraft developer went on to become not just the director of Overwatch, but the highly public face of the game. "Oh, are we getting bought for $69 billion today?" It all feels like Monopoly money.
Since the release of the first game of the trilogy in 2020, I have been heavily invested in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga. I've spent over 100 hours between the first two games, Remake and Rebirth, entrenching myself in this remade version of Gaia, re-acquainting myself with Cloud and the gang, and peeling back layer after layer of this reimagined story. Revelation, the upcoming third installment, is a finale 11 years in the making (if you start counting from FF7 Remake's initial E3 2015 reveal trailer), and I went into the latest demo for Revelation ready to learn more about this final chapter. It's been 11 years since we first saw Final Fantasy VII Remake at E3 2015, and six years since we first entered this new remade version of Cloud Strife's adventure.
I've spent years judging games on things like combat, story, graphics, or how satisfying their open worlds are. But something occurred to me recently--I've not put enough thought into where exactly I would live if I had to move into one of these games. Sure, legendary weapons are nice, and okay, fine, maybe I should be concerned about the fate of the world. The Bakers' House, Resident Evil 7 At first glance, the Baker family home is a lovely rural property.

2026 is a low-key revolutionary year for player movement in games Big Walk, Cairn, Baby Steps and the new generation of games that make masterpieces from everyday actions. A lot of the 3D games I consider touchstones of thoughtful player movement are a decade or more old: Mirror's Edge, of course, Titanfall 2, Dishonored 2, Doom Eternal or ARMA 3. That's by no means a comprehensive list, but these are the games that come to mind when I think about in-game movement that feels incredibly considered. And if ARMA 3 feels out of place in that list, its sim-style tactical physicality is memorable to anyone who plays it even briefly (me).
