MachineGames is rumoured to be working on a third Wolfenstein game.
All eyes may be on Grand Theft Auto 6's release in November, but this fall has kicked off with plenty else to play. Be it a new friendslop horror game, a relaxing driving experience, or a Mission: Impossible-style deception simulator, we've been enjoying a wide range of games in October. -- Mark Delaney See at Steam Lego Batman's Mayhem Mode Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight was one of my favorites earlier this year, a fun mash-up romp through various Batman continuity with combat inspired by the Arkham series. -- Gabe Gurwin See at Steam Also playing: Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2: The sequel to an already-wonderful boomer shooter is somehow even better, with a new playable character, branching paths, and more varied enemies.
Bethesda and Xbox development studio id Software, maker of the Doom franchise, has deepened its partnership with fellow Bethesda and Xbox studio MachineGames, makers of the most recent Wolfenstein games as well as 2024's Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. At a press event earlier this week for id Software's Doom: The Dark Ages - Revelations DLC, which was released this summer, studio co-director Marty Stratton was asked how the studio is doing in the wake of the layoffs that affected id as part of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's ongoing Xbox "reset." He answered, "We're doing great. Not to handwave the [layoffs] away...everybody knows we had about half of our studio exit as part of that. We're both really really bullish on what we have ahead." This is purely speculative on my part, but might the two decorated first-person shooter studios be co-developing MachineGames's next project, which is heavily rumored to be Wolfenstein 3 – with studio head Jerk Gustafsson saying, "We're not done with Wolfenstein yet"?

In 2023, an anonymous modder released one of the best horror games of the decade, and they still haven't broken character MyHouse.wad barrages players with horrible things they've never experienced in a game before. For a lot of people, the appeal of horror is being surprised and disturbed by something they've never seen before. In recent years, I've sourced this rare feeling from movies like Obsession, where the gender dynamics of that story made it feel a bit dangerous, or Speak No Evil, which has one of the most shocking and nihilistic endings that I can recall. I even find that freshness in a modern classic like Pearl, which isn't really scary, but contrasts a technicolour old Hollywood style with a singularly unsettling Mia Goth performance to great effect.

First Xbox COO Helen Chiang leaves company after three months in the role Chiang allegedly "terminated for policy violations," Xbox says it does not "discuss individual personal matters" Xbox's first COO Helen Chiang has left the company after only three months in the role. In an internal memo circulated on October 23 and obtained by The Verge, Xbox head Asha Sharma stated: "I'm grateful for her years of service and wish her well." Chiang's role will be split between other Xbox execs until a successor is appointed. According to our sister site Eurogamer, a source alleged that Chiang was "terminated for policy violations." Eurogamer stated it has "not been able to independently verify this claim." In response, Xbox vice president of communications Kari Perez said: "We don't discuss individual personal matters. We're grateful for Helen's years of service and wish her well." Chiang was appointed COO in July, coinciding with Xbox's announcement to lay off 3,200 employees and divest five studios as part of a company restructuring.
Our Verdict Modern Warfare 4 is the bar that this series should regularly aspire to, and a reminder that Call of Duty benefits when it actually tries to change. Microsoft has announced a new program called the Voluntary Exit Offer that it's extending to thousands of workers at the company, including people on the Xbox team. Microsoft is doing this to shed employees, but the messaging is that a program like this could be appealing to someone who was already thinking about leaving and can now do so with a pay package. The report said 60,000 workers are eligible for the Voluntary Exit Offer, and this works out to more than 25% of Microsoft's entire workforce. For the latest period, Microsoft reported $90 billion in revenue (up 18%) and a profit of $35.8 billion (up 22%).

Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive has responded after confirming Chucky would be removed from stores last week, explaining that horror icons will "continue to have an open invitation to join (or rejoin)." There was a bit of confusion amongst fans when the studio behind the hit asymmetrical horror game announced Chucky as the latest icon to leave its roster. Following the removal of Pinhead last year and Michael Myers just months ago, fans were sad to see another Killer exit stores so soon. However, it's ultimately not up to Behaviour when it comes to the date some franchises may depart. In a statement sent to IGN, Behaviour said that, while its "goal is always to keep licenses" in Dead by Daylight forever, that can't always be the case.
