Xbox CEO reportedly warns firm will "not survive" if it only relies on existing franchises Platform needs to "find new ways, and courage, to have invention on new IP that reach new sets of audiences" Xbox boss Asha Sharma has reportedly warned that the organisation will "not survive" if it relies on existing game franchises. During a recent town hall (via Windows Central), Sharma was said to have told employees that Xbox needs to "continue to create enduring new IP" as it "will not survive if we only rely on the past." "We have to find new ways, and courage, to have invention on new IP that reach new sets of audiences." She also said Xbox is "backing [its] strongest franchises" and that she wants Xbox's "great games to become great global billion-dollar franchises." Before Sharma took over from Phil Spencer, Xbox cancelled new IP projects last year, including Rare's Everwild, ZeniMax Online Studios' Project Blackbird, and Ninja Theory's Project Mara. Last month, Xbox proposed closing Ninja Theory as part of its ongoing "reset" of the business, which has seen the loss of an estimated 3,200 jobs and the divestment of five studios. During the same town hall, Sharma told staff that "after an all-time low, [Xbox] has started to return to growth," and that the firm is "making the right decisions to reinvest in the business." Yesterday, Xbox announced a new team to test new projects called Xbox Labs.
"It genuinely breaks my heart"- Confusion and frustration reign as gaming communities react to Xbox's drastic restructuring this week "Finally gonna put COD into the sea?" It's been another difficult week for Xbox and the many studios it operates, as a second wave of layoffs has ripped through the company. The saddest news surrounds the impending closure of Hellblade studio Ninja Theory, but layoffs have all but dismantled Halo Studios and halved Age of Empires developer World's Edge as well. Turn 10 and Playground Games The decision to merge Forza developers Playground Games and Turn 10 hasn't caused much commotion, partly because, as many people on the Forza subreddits point out, Turn 10 doesn't seem to exist in a meaningful capacity any more. The news was announced via an Xbox Wire post this morning, and followed earlier reports of planned layoffs. In the blog post, the company said that attempts to sell Ninja Theory had failed, and it was beginning a consultation process on its proposed closure. The firm said: "Undead Labs has now successfully transitioned on similar terms and, with a new publisher, will release State of Decay 3 day one on Game Pass." Microsoft said that the next Halo title would be "led by a new, purpose-built team that is separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty.
The contract was first signed for it in 2017. Over the past 10 years, we've seen a lot of great Xbox games ship on Series X and Series S (amongst other platforms) despite their long development cycles, but others have unfortunately fallen by the wayside along the way. We're talking games like Everwild and Perfect Dark — projects that clearly had a lot of potential behind them, but for whatever reason were ultimately canned by Microsoft. The same thing could have happened with Fable considering it was announced all the way back in 2020, but it's finally almost ready to launch at the start of 2027.

It's hard to get much more explicit than that, but the uploader, who goes by FvckAsha&Phil online – an apparent reference to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and her predecessor, Phil Spencer – goes even further to explain why Project Dream is surfacing online now of all times. Former Rare design director Gary Napper has shared a little about what his forthcoming dinosaur survival project The Lost Wild shares with Rare's mysterious nature fable Everwild , which was cancelled by Microsoft during a round of Xbox cuts last summer . He's also said more about how The Lost Wild compares to the game Napper is best known for, Creative Assembly and Sega's Alien: Isolation . According to Napper, Isolation was in some ways an "easier design challenge" than both Everwild and The Lost Wild, because there was less need to make the Alien feel like it had an agenda besides trying to murder the player.
Last July, when Microsoft made sweeping cuts to its gaming division, axing employees at King, Raven Software, Rare, Blizzard, and more, shuttering The Initiative, and cancelling the Perfect Dark reboot, Everwild, and ZeniMax Online's Project Blackbird, I said it was Microsoft's darkest day since the last one .
Microsoft spent a large chunk of time--and cash--acquiring new studios throughout the 2010s and 2020s, but its biggest move was the $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023. Trumpeted as a deal that would greatly bolster its portfolio of first-party studios and further enhance the appeal of its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, the acquisition has been followed by several waves of restructuring since then. January 2024 Project Odyssey The first big wave of layoffs hit in January 2024 , with 1,900 people out of 22,000 from Microsoft's video game division being cut from the company--almost 9% of all Xbox employees. Some of the affected studios included Call of Duty developer Raven Software, Forza Motorsport developer Turn 10 Studios, which reportedly lost nearly 50% of its staff , Rare's long-in-development game Everwild was canceled , and a new MMORPG from The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios, reportedly codenamed Blackbird , was also dropped.
