Helen Chiang, Xbox’s first-ever chief operating officer, is no longer in the role just three months after it was created, as told by CEO Asha Sharma in an internal memo today. The memo, verified by The Verge, included a brief statement from Sharma regarding Chiang’s exit. “Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft today. “We’ll share more on COO leadership as plans are finalized.” Chiang had been with Xbox for an astonishing 21 years.
After hearing the disappointing news that EA has shuttered BioWare , putting an end to two of my favorite RPG franchises— Mass Effect and Dragon Age —I have been, like so many other players, feeling pretty bummed out. But I consoled myself with the fact that, given the environment at BioWare in recent years, the now-canceled Mass Effect 5 probably wouldn't be that good anyway. Like many players, I enjoyed the Mass Effect trilogy, but felt that Mass Effect: Andromeda fell short. Similarly, BioWare's other recent titles— Anthem and Dragon Age: The Veilguard —struggled with messy development cycles marked by frequent changes in direction, mixed messages from higher-ups at EA, constant staff turnover, and other issues that ultimately led to an underwhelming gaming experience.
BioWare is dead, and my feelings are a strange cocktail of anger, sadness, and Jack’s Complete Lack of Surprise. The legendary RPG studio was bought by a private investment group earlier this year, and history shows that venture capital frequently kills what it touches, extracting whatever value out of it that it can before moving onto the next victim. Everyone knows Baldur’s Gate now on account of Larian Studios’ Game of the Year-winning, 10 out of 10 Baldur’s Gate 3 from 2023, but what younger gamers might not know is that the first two Baldur’s Gate RPGs were built by BioWare in the late ‘90s. It was the runner-up for IGN’s Best Role-Playing Game of 2002, finishing behind just one game: a little project you might have heard of called The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.

Thief designer Randy Smith Evergreen refused to work for Xbox because it would be like 'walking past some stakes with human skulls on them' and pretending 'it's probably fine in this direction' The immersive sim will find a way outside of AAA. A nonviolent RPG, in tune with the values of the Looking Glass games he worked on in the '90s, about a young American woman searching for her missing uncle in Eastern Europe. You're talking about a three to $10 million budget, a passionate team led by some of us folks who have experience with immersive sims or newcomers who just played a lot of immersive sims and really get it, making something that's a little bit smaller, more passionate, and can be made more quickly." The original Thief cost $3 million to make, Smith Evergreen points out. It's not clear to me that the $3 million dollar Thief or Deus Ex-style immersive sim that you want to make in the year 2026 is going to sell disproportionately different amounts of copies than the $250 million one that comes out of a big studio." There's only so much fidelity a game needs, Smith Evergreen suggests.
So far, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is shaping up to be another solid and charming entry in the sub-series. The monster-collecting style of RPG is a fairly crowded market these days, but Square Enix's efforts to double down on the charm and wholesomeness of Dragon Quest's world are what make this series so unique and fun to dive into. I had a blast with my limited time with Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, and I can't wait to see what other oddities and weird creatures to uncover.

Double Fine Productions, who recently regained the rights to its entire catalog following its pivot back to independence after Microsoft parted ways with several studios during its "Xbox reset," is honoring Tim Curry by making Brutal Legend free to download and own on PC for 666 minutes – until 3:06am PT/6:06am ET on Thursday, August 27. Curry, who passed away today at the age of 80, voiced Doviculus in Double Fine founder Tim Schafer's 2009 heavy metal strategy game Brutal Legend. IGN's own Daemon Hatfield loved Brutal Legend, giving it a 9 out of 10 in his review. "You haven't played a game quite like this before and won't want to miss it." Curry was perhaps best known for his role in the cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but also appeared in many video games besides Brutal Legend, including Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (back in the FMV cutscene days!), Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, and Dragon Age: Origins.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros isn't even out yet and it already feels ancient A by-the-numbers RTS based on a TV show that ended seven years ago. "But why?" That's the question I kept asking myself as I played through a few skirmishes of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, an RTS based on HBO's TV show. It's a competent, workmanlike creation that nonetheless fails to capture any of what made the show and the books that inspired it such a phenomenon. It's not due out until 2027, but Game of Thrones concluded in 2019, with a final season that even GoT defenders such as myself had to acknowledge was a bit of a dud.
The Duskbloods gameplay leaks ahead of tomorrow's closed beta, showing tense PvP battles with guns, wolves, and velociraptors From dawn till... A snippet of gameplay from The Duskbloods - FromSoftware's Switch 2 PvPvE action game - has leaked online ahead of an upcoming closed beta test. The Duskbloods leak was originally and accidentally posted online by 4Gamer, and was uploaded to Bilibili (a popular social media platform) before the original leak was hastily taken offline. The video showed the final climactic brawl between the three top-performing players at the climax of a Duskbloods match, where players duke it out for the top spot.
