Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy faces a difficult balancing act. Can it move away from its predecessors' terrifying waves of rats and still deliver a supernatural terror that ties into rewarding environmental puzzles? Can it ditch the series' sibling protagonists and still tell a moving story focused on two people learning to lean on one another? Set in 1334, about 15 years prior to the first two A Plague Tale games, Resonance follows Sophia instead of series protagonist Amicia de Rune.
It was impossible for me to play The Sinking City 2 for more than 15 minutes without coming to the obvious realization that this is Resident Evil in a fedora. That might sound dismissive, but I really enjoy the recent Resident Evil games, so comparing Frogwares' Lovecraftian survival horror sequel to some of the best of them – which feels especially similar to 2019's Resident Evil 2 remake – is much more of a compliment than a put-down. What sets it apart begins with its unique, rich, 1920s New England setting flush with loving detail that instills a strong sense of personality over the top of the mechanics it so clearly imitates. You play as Calvin Rafferty, a likeable occultist waking up to an apocalyptic flood set to wipe out the entire city of Arkham, Massachusetts in 1929.

I adore the first A Plague Tale, and while the second game, Requiem, did not grab me as much as the first, I do have a soft spot for it. A huge part of my love for these games is its protagonist, Amicia de Rune, who undergoes this incredible transformation from countryside noble to hardened espionage agent. So I was a little disappointed to see that the third game, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, is a prequel that goes back and focuses on a completely different character: Sophia, who Amicia met during the events of the second game. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is set to launch for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on August 27.

Despite its title, Resident Evil Requiem feels like a celebration of the series with its myriad mechanics from past titles. It beautifully blends different play styles in one coherent title, but what could have been the best Resident Evil game in the series is marred by its strange story. Whereas previous games featured annoying sections that I despise replaying ( RE2R 's Sewers, RE5 4-2, and RE6 Jake Chapter 2), almost all the segments here were fun in their own ways. Resident Evil Requiem will come out on February 27, 2026 for the PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.
