Netflix has announced three new adaptations of Sega games: a Crazy Taxi film, a Sonic animated series “built for kids who want to feel a little edge,” and a live-action movie based on the upcoming Stranger Than Heaven from Yakuza developer RGG Studio. The Crazy Taxi movie will be the first project released, though it doesn’t have a debut date yet. Netflix also already has three seasons of a Sonic show called Sonic Prime. Hey hey hey, it's time for Netflix to make some crazy money (as if they don’t have enough already)! As part of a major push for more video game adaptations, the streaming service's has partnered with Sega to adapt the publisher's beloved 1999 racing game, which will switch lanes and become a feature film. To ensure that the level of ridiculousness on the road meets demand, Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who wrote The Naked Gun reboot, have been tasked with taking the wheel and penning a script (per Netflix). Set in Japan across different eras between 1915 and 1965, the game lets players control Makoto Daito, a Japanese-American orphan who ends up in Japan and eventually forms the Tojo Clan.
Gen-AI controversy aside, Crazy Taxi: World Tour feels like classic arcade Sega - and it's an absolute blast Cabby fever. Crazy Taxi was not my favourite Dreamcast game (please don't ask me to choose between the triumphant rhythm triptych of Rez, Space Channel 5, and Samba de Amigo, however), but there's a specific bit of it that's forever seared into my brain: the giddy thrill of cresting over that one San-Francisco-inspired hill and barreling down toward the ocean, all while The Offspring's All I Want 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah'ed me into a state of gaming nirvana. As a moment, it's the kind of perfect melding of style and blissful arcade purity that seemed to define so much of Sega's Dreamcast-era output. And my recent half-hour hands-on with the upcoming Crazy Taxi: World Tour at Gamescom suggests the original's 90s skate-punk spirit and taut arcade thrills are - if perhaps not equal - alive and well in this, Sega's long-awaited revival.

The hall was packed, without an empty seat in sight, and there were plenty of gaming celebrities in attendance: Xbox head Asha Sharma could be seen near the front, gamely forming an 'X' with her arms as the camera panned over her. It was a sign of things to come, with a strong presence from Chinese and Korean companies in this year's Opening Night Live, which included titles like Cinder City and Like or Die from NC, PUBG: Ded.Net from Krafton, Ananta and Sea of Remnants from Netease, Zoopunk from Ti Games, and Tides of Annihilation from the Chengdu-based Eclipse Glow Games, not to mention another Hoyoverse title in the form of the life-simulation game Petit Planet. Among the indie standouts were Lofsöng from Unrelated Studio, Dust: Origins from Airship Syndicate, and Daniel Mullins' wild-looking Pony Island 2: Panda Circus, which is coming on April 27, 2027.
