"It was a pretty harrowing three months" – Undead Labs head Philip Holt on what happened after Xbox cut the studio loose The CEO explains what the new employee-owned structure looks like, why State of Decay 3 has taken so long, and how the studio is embracing co-development Back in July, Xbox announced plans to divest five studios. Among them was State of Decay maker Undead Labs, which Microsoft had acquired back in 2018. But yeah, I think it's highly unlikely that we spend as much time on the next game as we did on State of Decay 3." Undead Labs currently has around 8,000 players testing out State of Decay 3, and is working on a post-launch roadmap. State of Decay 3 is being birthed into an uncertain world where $1,000+ consoles look set to be the new normal, and Holt is aware that many players will stick with older, less-powerful consoles and PCs, so the studio is ensuring that "our minimum spec is as broad as we can make it".
DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn has defended the DCU's approach to interconnected stories, saying he doesn't want movies like Clayface to exist just to "set up" crossovers. Clayface poured into the DCU when it brought the tragic story of Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) to theaters yesterday. Despite solid scores from critics and fans (IGN gave it a 7/10 review), there are DC watchers who have continued to complain that executives like Gunn and co-chairman Peter Safran haven't done a good job of using smaller stories to build toward bigger tie-in projects. Speaking of the Superman sequel, a small group of people has now seen director's cuts of the film, with Gunn calling the process "exciting" as he tries "to recut over the week and screen the latest version for a few new eyes every Friday." Meanwhile, Elseworlds sequel, The Batman Part 2, is still seemingly on track for its February 18, 2028, release date despite recent behind-the-scenes shuffling.
Epic Games is holding a competition for AI-made games, with $50,000 grants and cash prizes up for grabs. Earlier in October, a report claimed that developers working on Epic’s upcoming Marvel and Star Wars crossover shooter had been instructed to adopt an “AI-first” approach, using the technology to generate code and artwork. Epic Games wants to pay you $50,000 for AI-made games Epic has announced the 2026 AI MegaJam, a four-day competition running from November 12 to 15, where participants must create a playable game using Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). The best overall Unreal Engine and UEFN games will each receive $7,500 for first place, with another $7,500 awarded to the best student project.
Electronic Arts is developing an American football experience unlike anything it's made before, the company said in a memo shared publicly after closing BioWare and laying off 400 people across the company . In trying to spin the news positively and toward the future, the memo's attributed writers, chief studios officer Cam Weber and chief operating officer David Tinson, spoke about several of the publishing giant's upcoming games, including something EA is calling Project Gridiron. The memo's exact phrasing calls it a "social-first open-world experience for our American Football team." In other words, EA is getting closer to something I've been writing about for years: Madden (and possibly College Football) heavily cribbing from NBA 2K's The City mode and giving football fans a virtual social space of their own. The company that gave us viral bad news like " Project $10 ," day-one DLC , and paid crafting materials in Dead Space 3 simply hasn't earned a tempered response from players, and so there won't be one.
EA cancels unannounced The Sims project, trims the Skate team and reportedly plans to lay off 400 workers: "We're the number one publisher in Western HD gaming" Respawn is also collaborating with DICE on a new game. Not only is EA closing down BioWare and cancelling the next Mass Effect - Electronic Arts has now announced a heap of drastic changes that include cutting 400 jobs across the company, pausing development on a project connected to The Sims, and bringing together Respawn and DICE. A group of investment firms led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund took EA private earlier this summer, in a deal worth around $55 billion. When EA was acquired by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, many expected major changes at the gaming company, including layoffs and game cancellations, among other shakeups. Now, those have begun, with EA on October 21 confirming a series of significant changes impacting the people and teams that worked on many storied franchises. As for Apex Legends, EA said it will continue to "invest heavily" in the franchise by adding new gameplay modes and "other new experiences." Iron Man and Star Wars Jedi While EA may have canceled its Black Panther game already, the company's other big Marvel game, Iron Man, remains in development. The biggest leveraged buyout of all time The PIF, along with Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, took EA private in a $55 billion sale that was constructed as a leveraged buyout, or LBO.
BioWare, the legendary studio behind RPGs like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is shutting down, the company confirmed in a statement. Alongside the closure, Electronic Arts has chosen not to continue development on the next Mass Effect game that was in the works, according to an announcement sent to EA staff. The changes follow EA being taken private by an investor group led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners in a $55 billion deal that closed in August. Other major gaming companies have made sweeping changes this year as well, including Xbox’s “reset” that will include 3,200 cuts, Bungie’s “significant” layoffs, and Fortnite maker Epic Games laying off over 1,000 staff.
Lucasfilm wants to do more Star Wars games like Zero Company and Galactic Racer: 'We’ve tried to be more flexible about who we’re willing to take pitches from' Not every Star Wars game has to be a big-budget blockbuster to be successful. We've had two Star Wars games in 2026, both of them quite good and neither of them quite what you might expect from the Star Wars mould: Zero Company, an XCOM-style tactics game, and Galactic Racer, an arcade racing game but Star Wars. Both Zero Company and Galactic Racer were developed by independent studios—Bit Reactor and Fuse Games, respectively—and that "very much is part of the strategy," Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly told The Game Business. Of course, there are plenty of familiar-looking Star Wars games in the trench too: Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new addition to the Knights of the Old Republic series, was announced at The Game Awards in 2025, the third and supposedly last Star Wars Jedi game is in development, Quantic Dream is still plugging away on Star Wars: Eclipse, despite recent reports of struggles, and yes, that KOTOR remake is, somehow, still happening.

Though it may not be a sales juggernaut on the scale of Mario or The Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem is one of Nintendo's preeminent franchises. Like so many of its vaunted stablemates, the series is almost as old as Nintendo's gaming ambitions, debuting on the Famicom and appearing on nearly every home and handheld console since. Given this prominence, it's almost difficult to believe that Fire Emblem's future was ever in jeopardy, but such was indeed once the case; there was a point in time when the series was very much on the verge of cancellation, and it took a dramatic shakeup to reverse its fortunes. The series' second worldwide release (and final GBA installment), The Sacred Stones , arrived in 2005 and moved more than 700,000 copies over its lifetime, while GameCube's Path of Radiance followed later that same year and sold more than half a million copies–well enough to satisfy Nintendo's expectations, considering the system's age and comparatively small user base.
Epic Games is under fire once again this week for its stance on AI, as the company is apparently pivoting to "AI-accelerated development"--and supreme overlord Tim Sweeney has been trying to make it seem as though he and his company are not bothered by the backlash even a little bit. But everything that Sweeney and his spokespeople have said this week makes them look like they're embarrassingly out of touch with the reality of our present moment. Maybe it's time for Sweeney to go outside and get some fresh air and remember what it was like to be a regular person who doesn't have a billion dollars and a powerful corporation that he rules with an iron fist. Disney gave Epic $1.5 billion a couple of years ago, and all they have to show for it so far are a bunch of Fortnite skins and some Creative islands that nobody plays--perhaps Disney is getting annoyed about that.
How Star Wars: Galactic Racer kept the core team small and sustainable through "distributed development" "When you shrink, there's a personal impact to people, but you also lose an incredible amount of knowledge, which I think is probably way more expensive to retrieve" Matt Webster, CEO of Fuse Games, is "thrilled" with the critical reception to Star Wars: Galactic Racer, which is currently sitting on a Metacritic score of 88 for the PS5 version. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at Game Republic New Horizons this week, he says it "felt like we had something good", but you "never really know" how a game will land. He cautions that it's "too early to tell" whether the game has met sales expectations – "I mean, we're only really through our first weekend" – but he's been pleased to see the audience is receptive to innovation. "If sports is the biggest entertainment medium on this planet, then surely the same would be true in a galaxy far, far away." "The intrigue and the excitement off track is as compelling as it is on track" He says that a big inspiration for Galactic Racer right from the start was the Netflix series Drive to Survive, which follows the trials and tribulations of Formula 1 drivers across a season of the F1 World Championship.
Control Resonant becomes the fastest-selling game in Remedy's history, outpacing Alan Wake 2 and the original Control Series far from Faden away. The latest game to pass a 1 million copies sold milestone is Control Resonant. Developer Remedy Entertainment broke the news yesterday, roughly three weeks after the game's release, revealing that Resonant is now the fastest-selling game in the Finnish studio's 31-year history. Control Resonant joins the likes of The Blood of Dawnwalker, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Star Wars Zero Company, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve as recent releases that have all sold over 1 million copies.
Dune: Awakening developer Funcom is pivoting to focus on its two ongoing online projects, Conan Exiles and the more recent survival MMO based on Frank Herbert's universe – a pivot that means reshuffling the team and, unfortunately, layoffs. The news comes from GamesIndustry.biz alongside a direct statement from Funcom CEO Rui Casais, who says he's stepping down at the end of 2026 after 11 years as studio lead. Chief product officer Scott Junior will step into his role – but that's not the only change in the books for the team. Those previous redundancies also accompanied words on how Dune: Awakening "has already shown incredible potential" and was "the biggest release we've had in our 32-year long history of making great games." Dune: Awakening boss reveals movie director Denis Villeneuve once feared the survival game's name "could be a little too close to Star Wars"
Epic Games claims its new "vibe coded" launcher runs 46% faster than Steam from cold start to store page AI was "used as a tool as part of [its] development process" to "allow a small team to rewrite the code base and be able to launch it faster across platforms" Epic Games has released a beta version of its new launcher, claiming it is 46% faster than Steam from cold start to the store page. The launcher, currently available in preview mode, is also reportedly 14% faster than its competitor when restoring from system tray to library. "The library loads 30 times faster [than in the previous launcher]," Martin Keely, vice president and general manager of Epic Games Store, told IGN. In an internal message seen by Bloomberg, one of the game's directors told staff: "No more hand-written code." The director also said all of the game's art would be "generated with full AI workflows." Epic communications director Jake Jones stated that the firm is "embracing AI-accelerated development, led by Epic developers who are the visionaries and creative drivers for everything we do." On social media, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney wrote: "We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration." "The aim isn't to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal."
