Spoilers follow for Street Fighter. Put on your gis and gloves, fighting fans, because Street Fighter is now in theaters. The latest attempt to adapt the venerated fighting game franchise for the big screen may not be getting off to the best start with critics, but fans of the series will likely go check it out for themselves. Given how important the Mortal Kombat tournament is to the series mythology, the film couldn’t help but make me and many others feel like Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park: “You do plan on having Mortal Kombat in your Mortal Kombat movie, right?” It didn’t work, and much of the fan backlash to the reboot had to do with the movie excising the tournament and making unwelcome changes to MK lore, like the infamous “Arcana” tattoos that provided champions with special powers.
Street Fighter has long been more than just a fighting game. It’s impossible to discuss the most popular video game characters of all time without mentioning Chun-Li, Ryu, or Ken. Street Fighter's massive popularity is also a curse when it comes to live-action video game adaptations: 1994's Street Fighter and 2009's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li were poorly received, despite both films having big budgets and being hyped among fans. It was certainly a welcome choice to have '90s hits like Montell Jordan’s “This is How We Do It” and 4 Non Blondes’ "What's Up?” feature on the soundtrack, but the movie goes on to then disregard the era the movie takes place in by blasting “Who Let the Dogs Out?,” a song that came out in 2000.

Wizards of the Coast has announced it will end a play format in Magic: The Gathering Arena. The Alchemy format, a digital-only format for the digital version of the iconic card game, will end shortly after the launch of the latest set, Reality Fracture. A fan-made browser game has transformed Super Smash Bros into a battle royale where 45 Nintendo fighters use guns to survive on an island. Super Smash Bros has been reimagined in just about every way possible, but a new browser project has taken Nintendo’s platform fighter into completely uncharted territory. Created by developer Rishi, Super Smash Royale drops characters from Melee and Brawl onto a sprawling island where they must collect weapons, outrun a closing storm, and eliminate their opponents. Its 45-fighter roster includes Mario, Link, Pikachu, Sonic, Kirby, Snake, Mewtwo, and more, while matches can feature up to 32 combatants.
