If last week's mysterious Mass Effect: Universe trailer leak wasn't painful enough for you in the wake of BioWare's sudden closure , we've gotten yet another taste of The Game That Could Have Been, this time courtesy of award-winning video game composer Austin Wintory. Known for his beautiful and haunting soundtracks for games like Flow, Journey, ABZÛ , Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Sword of The Sea , John Wick Hex, and Hades II , Wintory was also evidently working on the Mass Effect: Universe soundtrack. From the sounds of things, EA and the now-defunct BioWare were considering having Wintory produce the game's OST. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBO8s_McKjU "In 2007, when the credits rolled on my first playthrough of Mass Effect, I remember calling a friend and saying, 'I can't believe I already know this will be among my favorite all-time games.' Usually, it takes the passage of time before we can be so sure something truly belongs to the ages, but in this case, the confidence was instantaneous," Wintory wrote.
Composer Austin Wintory was once in talks to make music for Mass Effect 5. Now that EA has shuttered BioWare and canceled the game, he's released his drafts online. The award-winning composer behind Sword of the Sea, Journey, and a laundry list of other video games, movies, and shows revealed that he had been in talks to create music for the now-canceled Mass Effect revival in a post on social media. To even dream in your sandbox was a privilege https://t.co/wmq2N7s6Kp "Working on Mass Effect 5 was my career's biggest dream project, my white whale," he said in the description of his YouTube upload.

It’s easy to forget just how many Aliens games have been made over the years. You’d be forgiven for wondering whether there are actually enough to warrant an entire book, but at 176 pages, Mike Diver’s Aliens: The Video Games covers just about everything, from an unlicensed 1981 Commodore PET title right up to the anticipated release of Alien: Isolation 2 . Yes, Fireteam Elite 2 is missing, but it was announced long after the book’s completion. Much like Perfect Organism from Andy Kelly (who provides the foreword for this one), Diver's authority and high regard for the franchise is clear.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 is one of the most frustrating fumbles of 2026. I’m a huge Alien and Aliens fan, and I've loved the steady flow of video game adaptations over the years – everything from the daft Aliens Vs. Predator on the PS3, through to the iconic Alien Isolation on PS4. I'm even a pretty big fan of the first Aliens: Fireteam Elite as a schlocky but fun co-op shooter.
Aliens Fireteam Elite 2 (AFE 2) is a bigger sequel to its 2021 original. That may go without saying in the video game world: "More" is often the TLDR version of any sequel's intended scope. But AFE 2 is doing more in a way we don't often see, by revising its three-player co-op structure to suit teams of four. It was a lot of work, but it's worth it." Aliens Fireteam Elite launches on August 25 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
As much as I love horror in general, I particularly enjoy the licensed horror games we've been getting for the past few years. Even when some aren't as strong as others, I find the mere attempt so exciting. There have been so many examples lately, and I've previously dug into why Hollywood keeps chasing video game horror . With Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 due out next week, and Halloween: The Game just behind it in early September, you may be similarly excited to have two more such examples of horror legends turned video games.
