As Skydance merges with Warner Bros. and Paramount, the company offers voluntary redundancy and mandates return to the office Who'd have thunk it. Skydance - the newly formed corporate megazord combining Warner Bros and Paramount - has issued a full five-day return-to-office mandate to employees, and offered voluntary buyouts as the merging of the companies begins. The company was formed earlier this month following a much-debated $110bn Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros., in which both companies were squished together to be led by a refreshed board, which includes former UK prime minister Tony Blair (in an advisory role), philanthropist Laurene Powell, and former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick.
The upcoming Call of Duty movie aims to show the "cost of war," according to director Peter Berg. He told ComicBook that the film, set in the Modern Warfare universe, will strive to capture the spirit of those games, which means lots of guns and violence, but also heart and soul. "So Modern Warfare, if you really look at the missions, and the storylines, and the characters--like Captain Price, and Soap, and Ghost, and Alex--these are complicated humans,” Berg said. The newest Call of Duty game, meanwhile, was Modern Warfare 4 , which just launched on October 23.
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has responded after the cast of the Street Fighter movie were vocally enthusiastic about the idea of making a crossover film with Mortal Kombat, and it looks like he’s open to the possibility, too — as long as a game gets made first. I got the chance to chat with the cast of the Street Fighter movie ahead of its October 16 release, and many of the actors involved told me they’re absolutely game for a crossover with the Mortal Kombat films. In fact, Andrew Schulz joked that this was the real goal of his infamous jab at the MK cast during the 2025 Game Awards. They were enthusiastic about Yujiro Hanma joining Tekken 8, for example, and even seemed open to the idea of collaborating with Baki again, which previously enjoyed a partnership with Street Fighter 6 in 2023 and 2024.

This despite costing a fraction of what a blockbuster film usually costs; Backrooms was made for an estimated $10 million, while Obsession cost less than $1 million. Few games have had as lasting an impact on the overarching gaming space through one mechanic alone as the Nemesis system presented in Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War . First released in 2014, it's hard to believe such innovation has been stuck locked away for over a decade since Monolith Productions, its original developers, closed their doors, leaving the Nemesis system locked behind them thanks to Warner Bros.' patent, but Aspyr, following their recent port for Lord of the Rings: War in the North , have brought back arguably one of the most celebrated Tolkien-esque games to Switch 2, either sold separately, or together with its sequel as part of the Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle . Bobby's back The former Activision Blizzard CEO has joined the board of directors at Skydance, the company formed by Paramount's acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery. Former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, who left the company and the videogame industry at the end of 2023 following its acquisition by Microsoft, is back in the game. The matter was ultimately settled in December 2023, shortly before Kotick's departure: Activision paid $54 million to the state to settle pay and promotion inequity claims, and set aside another $47 million to handle accusations of gender discrimination; the California Civil Rights Department (formerly the Department of Fair Employment and Housing) dropped its sexual harassment suit, stating in the settlement that "no court or any independent investigation" has substantiated allegations of "systemic or widespread sexual harassment at Activision Blizzard" or that Kotick acted improperly with regard to handling workplace misconduct. Earlier in 2023, Activision Blizzard paid $35 million to settle an SEC complaint that it had violated rules for the protection of whistleblowers and failed to disclose information to investors.

"It's less risky to be the masters of our own fate" – The AAA developers going indie Veterans from Warner Bros and 2K explain why the low pay and uncertainty of the indie space beats "doomscrolling on LinkedIn" Justin Fischer and Brock Feldman suddenly found themselves out of a job in 2025, when Warner Bros decided to shutter their studio, Player First Games, the developer of Multiversus. Netflix has been experimenting with video games for a while, but is the streaming giant going to eventually drop out of gaming? That's the question Bloomberg's Lucas Shaw put to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos at the Screentime event this week . Regarding whether Netflix will still host games in five years, Sarandos said, "I think so." He said Netflix's push into mobile gaming was "a gateway to cloud gaming," which is something Netflix is "much more interested in." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lsV9I2NDO8 Netflix hosts a variety of mobile games, including Red Dead Redemption, Sonic Mania Plus, and RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch, just to name a few. Netflix has also said it's still very early days for its gaming output, saying the company has “tons more work to do." Netflix's financial investment in gaming is minuscule relative to its other business areas, and management sees gaming as a "significant market opportunity." Netflix investors no doubt want to see Netflix find new ways to make money; after all, Netflix stock has crashed more than 25% in 2026 so far.
