Дэн Гринэуолт (Dan Greenawalt), глава Turn 10 Studios, покидает Microsoft спустя почти 27 лет в компании. Об этом со ссылкой на источники в XBOX рассказал журналист The Verge Том Уоррен (Tom Warren).… […]
Dan Greenawalt, director, founder, and vice president at Turn 10 Games, has departed from the studio after spending 27 years as part of the company. This comes as Turn 10 is merged with Playground Games as part of Xbox's mass restructuring initiative that made headlines as it resulted in 3200 layoffs and four studio closures earlier this year.
There is currently a concerted and not-so-subtle campaign underway to try to manufacture consent for the use of AI in game development.
After 27 years, Dan Greenawalt retires from Microsoft. Dan Greenawalt is leaving Turn 10 Studios after 27 years, as the Forza Motorsport developer merges into Playground Games and is officially renamed Playground Games Redmond. Greenawalt was there from day dot for Team Green, shipping original Xbox title Project Gotham Racing in 2001 before going onto to lead the creation of Forza , founding Turn 10 Studios, and publishing eight phenomenal racing games. 'AAA publishers are abusing early access,' Denis Dyack says, and that's making things harder for everyone else Dyack believes that games like Subnautica 2 are "skewing player expectations" for early access games. "AAA publishers are abusing early access, skewing player expectations in such a way that it heavily disadvantages smaller independent developers." Denis Dyack, known for his work on games including Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, says big game developers are "abusing early access" by using it as a marketing tool for highly polished games that are ready for full release anyway. Ethan McKinnon, who joined Deadhaus Sonata developer Apocalypse Studios as creative director after the game's rough early access launch earlier this year, added that "players naturally compare everything in the same marketplace, so smaller teams are being held to a much higher standard than they were in the past." Interestingly, Subnautica 2 creative director Anthony Gallegos seemed to agree with at least part of Dyack's proposition, saying in the same report that early access is "not a few edge-case games participating anymore." "Early access could mean a game like ours doing long-term open development, or it could be a game three months from a 1.0 release that's effectively doing a paid beta soft launch and using the Early Access term as a way to soften player expectations," Gallegos said. In a lot of ways, we were too focused on what made our game so different and unique that it took our attention away from making sure we got the basics done right." McKinnon put it more simply: "Developers need to treat early access like a real launch, because players do." 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80.
To anyone listening closely to what Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been saying over the past couple of years, this week felt like the clearest sign yet that AI is about to fundamentally change the size of Microsoft’s workforce. Microsoft is now offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India. Microsoft now employs around 223,000 people as of June 30th, 5,000 fewer than the 228,000 people it employed in 2025. Xbox hardware and content and services were also down, but a whole third of Microsoft’s revenue came from Azure ($33.17 billion of the $92.3 billion).
James Gunn has clarified DC Studios’ 8-10 year roadmap and confirmed its focus on Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as its “diamond characters.” Gunn shared this information on Threads in response to a now-deleted post, where he urged the original poster to study up on his quotes from January 2023 in regards to what his version of the DCU will end up looking like. “I said some stories would be standalone like the Guardians movies were (which is what Clayface is), and some stories would have part of a larger narrative structure, which is what the Superman Saga is. All that said, each piece of the larger story should work on its own with or without having to see everything else,” he said. He went on to clarify that the “often-cited 8-10 year roadmap” for the DCU doesn’t just apply to story points, but also outlines the plan for “DC as a whole.” This includes focusing on “diamond characters,” which Gunn confirmed are, perhaps unsurprisingly, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, as well as “smaller characters we could turn into diamonds.” These smaller characters were listed as Krypto the Superdog, John Stewart, and Peacemaker.

"AAA publishers are abusing Early Access," RPG dev says, and Steam games like Subnautica 2 and Path of Exile have warped "the landscape and players' expectations" Denis Dyack – founder of Silicon Knights and current CEO of Apocalypse Studios – says that AAA publishers' use of Early Access is shifting player expectations and making it harder for independent teams. Specifically, he cites developers releasing a "polished product" and using the Early Access standing as "a marketing beat," the problem being that the quality of these titles, in turn, will lead gamers "expecting a near-perfect game," which Dyack asserts "defeats the purpose of Early Access, which is a collaborative development process based on player feedback." "AAA publishers are abusing Early Access, skewing player expectations in such a way that it heavily disadvantages smaller independent developers," Dyack continues, citing Subnautica 2 and Path of Exile as examples of titles that used the program "drastically changing the landscape and players' expectations." With Apocalypse Studios' Deadhaus Sonata, he says the team hit "significant barriers to entry" which in turn "significantly reduced" their market impact.
Our Verdict Modern Warfare 4 is the bar that this series should regularly aspire to, and a reminder that Call of Duty benefits when it actually tries to change. PC Gamer's got your back There is a new game titled "Call of Duty" every year, but it's not every year that Call of Duty is really back. These back-to-back games, shouldered by Treyarch, Sledgehammer, and Raven, had cracks and compromises that suggested the Call of Duty machine just can't keep up with both "good" and "fast" anymore.
"Developers need to treat Early Access like a real launch, because players do" – Early Access games are on the rise, but so are player expectations The studios behind Valheim, Subnautica, Hades, Phasmophobia, Paralives, and Deadhaus Sonata discuss the highs and lows of Early Access The number of games released through Steam's Early Access program has risen significantly in recent years. According to SteamDB, 2,924 Early Access games launched on Valve's platform in 2026 (as of mid-October), an 18% increase from 2025 and a 60% increase from 2020. As a percentage of the overall number of Steam games released each year, Early Access titles are on the rise, going from a 10.4% share in 2024 to 11.3% in 2025 and 13.7% in 2026. Daniel Knight, CEO and game director at Phasmophobia maker Kinetic Games, says that whether Early Access or 1.0, new releases need to be at "a much higher quality." Paralives developer Alex Massé says he ended up delaying the game's Early Access launch from December 2025 to May 2026 after pre-release tests revealed the tutorials and some other features weren't up to scratch.
CD Projekt marks the 19th anniversary of its first Witcher RPG with a tribute to BioWare: 'Their support helped turn our vision into Geralt’s first interactive adventure' The Witcher was developed on BioWare's Aurora engine, but the Dragon Age studio did more than just share its tech. Over many years, I've written tens of thousands of words covering the Remedy Connected Universe, the Finnish studio's world tying the Alan Wake and Control series together. This is a team that loves rewarding players who notice the smaller details and go off the golden path in search of morsels of understanding. Connecting dots is often much of the fun in a Remedy game. Time after time, I couldn't find anything relevant to the lingering plot threads we were left with from 2024's Alan Wake 2 and 2019's Control.
BioWare's incredible legacy will continue as long as there are RPGs EA is shutting down the venerable studio, but its impact will persevere. For my column this week I was going to write about climbing all over monsters in Dragon Dogma 2's chilly Dark Arisen expansion, but then EA decided to finally murder BioWare after years of slowly poisoning it. So sadly I am pivoting to this eulogy. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Fraser is the UK online editor and has actually met The Internet in person.
'I drank from the chalice of blood': indie dev scrubs his game of AI-generated voice lines, having previously described the technology as 'anti-human and anti-art' Well, here's a headscratcher. Paolo Pedercini, developer of Future? In the second blog, he stated that he believes that "the game is worse not, but only, like, 0.001% worse." He also included a "personal update" through which he responded more broadly to the backlash. Why private equity acquisitions like the one that just claimed BioWare are so dreaded BioWare is just the latest casualty in a long history of private equity carnage. The LGBTQ-inclusive developer of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, which hadn't managed to transmute development mayhem into sales success and whose games aren't ideal environments for loot boxes, did not seem likely to be admired by its new owners, Saudi Arabia and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner. A report using S&P data found that in 2024, private equity-backed companies accounted for more than 10% of all corporate bankruptcies and over 50% of bankruptcies with over $500 million in liabilities—but "despite their role in precipitating bankruptcies, private equity firms often emerge financially unscathed." "There have certainly been instances of this—the 2017 bankruptcy of Toys 'R' Us is top of mind for me," Venema said. And Dell, Venema said, went from a $25 billion buyout in 2013 to being valued today at nearly $100 billion after going public again in 2018.
Xbox reportedly mandate four days a week in office for staff close to Microsoft's Washington HQ, up from three day requirement brought in last year Change set to take effect from beginning of February next year, it's claimed Xbox have reportedly informed staff that, from the start of February 2027, those within commuting distance of Microsoft's Washington base will have to come into the office four days a week. This follows the mandating of three days in office last year, and comes as the company are looking at cutting more staff as part of ongoing efforts to eventually get rid of 3200 people in multi-round mass layoffs. "Starting February 1st, 2027, Xbox employees in Puget Sound who live within 50 commuting miles of Studio D are required to work from the office a minimum of four days a week," Xbox's chief people officer Jacinda Chislum Pearson wrote in an internal memo seen by The Verge. Pearson continued that the company have "thousands of Xbox employees within commuting distance of Redmond" and couched the move as being about the idea that "working together in person makes it easier to review work, resolve issues, and make decisions without the burden of scheduling another meeting".
BioWare is dead, and my feelings are a strange cocktail of anger, sadness, and Jack’s Complete Lack of Surprise. The legendary RPG studio was bought by a private investment group earlier this year, and history shows that venture capital frequently kills what it touches, extracting whatever value out of it that it can before moving onto the next victim. Everyone knows Baldur’s Gate now on account of Larian Studios’ Game of the Year-winning, 10 out of 10 Baldur’s Gate 3 from 2023, but what younger gamers might not know is that the first two Baldur’s Gate RPGs were built by BioWare in the late ‘90s. It was the runner-up for IGN’s Best Role-Playing Game of 2002, finishing behind just one game: a little project you might have heard of called The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.
Founder of bankrupt Samson studio mulls how to use AI for his next attempt: 'Cutting corners in game development has a habit of coming back to bite you in the ass' Christopher Sundberg said the goal for his next studio is to make "a game we can afford to finish without needing every sales forecast to come true." Christofer Sundberg, the founder of Samson developer Liquid Swords, has confirmed the studio's closure, saying that while the console version of the game enjoyed "much greater success" than the PC release, it "wasn't enough to get the company across the finish line." Reports over the weekend revealed that Liquid Swords had gone bankrupt just six months after the PC release of Samson, which was followed by a console launch in September. "It's been a hell of a ride and a lot of fun, even when the circumstances gave us very little to laugh about," Sundberg wrote. I can look honestly at what went wrong and still be proud of what we built." Samson wasn't especially well received when it debuted on PCs, and while post-launch updates have tightened it up, it still holds a very "mixed" rating on Steam, where just 55% of user reviews are positive, and a 51 aggregate score on Metacritic. I can do that too, but it's quite exhausting in the long-run." 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80.
