Ubisoft have announced that they aren't working on any more Assassin's Creed remakes for the moment, despite learning a "tremendous amount" from Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. Instead, it's all shoulders to the wheel for a thrilling future that contains witches, a stronger sense of narrative cohesion, and possibly some kind of Assassin's Creed Smash Bros equivalent. In the shorter term, Ubisoft are still adding things to both Resynced and Assassin's Creed Valhalla.
To anyone listening closely to what Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been saying over the past couple of years, this week felt like the clearest sign yet that AI is about to fundamentally change the size of Microsoft’s workforce. Microsoft is now offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India. Microsoft now employs around 223,000 people as of June 30th, 5,000 fewer than the 228,000 people it employed in 2025. Xbox hardware and content and services were also down, but a whole third of Microsoft’s revenue came from Azure ($33.17 billion of the $92.3 billion).
BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has spoken out about the closure of BioWare last week, which saw 50 jobs lost as part of 400 cuts across the company, along with the cancellation of Mass Effect 5, which we've now come to learn (via a leaked internal trailer) was called Mass Effect: Universe. Speaking to 80 Level, Zeschuk lamented the end of the studio but said he went through his own emotional goodbye to the studio after he and fellow co-founder Ray Muzyka departed it on their own terms back in 2012, several months after the launch of Mass Effect 3. We showed you could do something really special in a place that was not known for doing things like that.” Regarding the Saudi Public Investment Fund's $55 private buyout of EA, Zeschuk said he wasn't surprised that BioWare was ultimately shut down. Meanwhile, composer Austin Wintory revealed he'd been in discussions with EA and BioWare about composing the soundtrack for Mass Effect 5 and was such a fan of the series that he even went so far as to release 22 minutes of Mass Effect music he'd created to help convince the publisher to hire him.
Canada could expand its proposed social media ban for children under 16 to include gaming platforms such as Roblox, Minecraft, and Discord, potentially introducing new restrictions on how young players interact online. The Canadian government introduced its Safe Social Media Act in June, proposing to prevent anyone under 16 from holding social media accounts unless platforms can demonstrate sufficient safety protections. However, gaming platforms were left out of the legislation, something Canadian officials are now reconsidering amid growing concerns about online predators. According to The Globe and Mail, Canadian Identity Minister Marc Miller said he would “absolutely consider” expanding the bill to address certain aspects of gaming.

Breaking up established game development teams in favour of "AAA veteran" start-ups and "magic bean" technologies is like "setting fire to millions of dollars of property and equipment", in the words of Star Trek Online executive producer Thomas Marrone. He thinks it's "wildly irresponsible and self-sabotaging", and that videogame company shareholders should be absolutely furious about it. Marrone's comments come in response to EA closing BioWare yesterday , but he takes aim at closures and layoffs across the industry. He notes that many of the most successful teams owe their accomplishments to lessons learned from screw-ups, and suggests that if big game publishers just want "number to go up", they should get out of the game-making trade and pour all their cash into investment funds.
Following shock BioWare closure, scope of EA job cuts becomes clear as layoffs hit Respawn, Maxis, Full Circle, EA Motive, and more EA previously said 400 jobs to be cut. EA announced overnight it's closing Mass Effect and Dragon Age studio BioWare in a new round of cuts that include the elimination of 400 roles across the publisher. But while it confirmed BioWare's 50 workers are affected, and that Skate studio Ripple Effect was being downsized, it did not say where the other 350 job cuts would come from. While EA shuts down BioWare, developers of The Sims, Skate, and Battlefield say they've also lost their jobs Maxis and others appear hit by 400-strong layoff wave Apparently the cliché "when it rains, it pours" also applies to corporate feculence. In addition to shutting down storied RPG makers BioWare, EA are reportedly cutting staff at The Sims developers Maxis, as well as Skate studio Full Circle and Battlefield 6 co-devs Ripple Effect. And I hope everyone's proud of what we did together." Word of cuts at Ripple Effect, who've worked on Battlefield 6, Battlefield 2042, and the Battlefield Portal UGC platform, has also been corroborated by posts from character artist Corey Thomas, technical animator Juan Meza, and technical artist Turner Spring. EA has closed BioWare, canceled the next Mass Effect, and, most importantly, upended the lives of even more game developers in a tumultuous time for the industry. In response, developers are paying tribute to the legendary RPG studio online, with many calling its games pivotal to their own creative paths. 17-year BioWare veteran and longtime director Michael Gamble shared the studio's news post. New Bungie head Josh Deane replied to Gamble's post, saying, "Thank you and to everyone at Bioware who has built worlds that have been such an important part of our lives." In a separate post, Deane adds, "This studio is magical and an existential part of my favorite gaming memories, I refuse to believe this..." CD Projekt Red veteran Paweł Sasko, a face of the studio to many fans of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher, says "Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 shaped my imagination and the desire to create games.
This is an IGN opinion piece by Jackie Thomas, who has been playing and replaying Mass Effect for nearly 20 years now. I'm the sort of person who replays my favorite games whenever there's a big gap between releases. And those favorites usually end up being from the Mass Effect series, whether it's just the first game or a run through the entire original trilogy. So, for me, a Mass Effect 5 that captured the magic of the first three games has been something I've been looking forward to since before it was even announced in 2020.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent's co-founder explained the 'the dynamic of Steam' to Red Barrels after Outlast's sales slowed down "Basically, your sales curve becomes like a roller coaster." Knowing this, you could probably piece together the kind of person I have become—let's just say it explains a lot.
Poll 100 people on the scariest game they've ever played. Morin remembered potential partners telling him that they'd "rather invest $50,000 in 10 mobile games than $500,000 in [Outlast]." Ultimately, the Canada Media Fund (CMF), a publicly funded investment program meant to support homegrown media projects across Canada, helped bring Outlast to fruition. We were in a sprint to release the game before running out of money." Morin remembered potential partners telling him that they'd "rather invest $50,000 in 10 mobile games than $500,000 in [Outlast]." No publisher materialized, but the work continued, and eventually the team felt it could get the game to the finish line without an outside publisher, so Red Barrels did exactly that, though Morin admitted the team had no experience with that side of making video games. Once you have people coming for the food, then you can maybe hope to sell them $200 bottles of wine." Recently, The Outlast Trials quadrupled its personal-best Steam concurrent-player record , exceeding 120,000 players thanks to a hefty Steam discount, players' desire for scary games to play around Halloween , and a surge in China specifically.

To buy a Steam Machine, you first must join a waitlist. I wasn't actually going to buy one. That is, when I wasn’t playing my PS5, Xbox Series X, or Switch 2. While I had some initial problems trying to play older games that don’t support Steam cloud saves (and thus couldn’t pick up the progress I’d made on Steam Deck), I downloaded a handful of newer games (The Witcher 3 Remastered, The Order of the Sinking Star, ARC Raiders) and have been playing happily across devices.
Control Resonant has sold one million copies, becoming Remedy’s fastest-selling game in spite of leakers cracking the title and pirating it after its digital launch in September. Nivalis Nights might not have any combat, "but that doesn't mean it's a cosy game," so says its lead writer "If you want a cosy existence in this city, you're going to have to earn it" Discourse notwithstanding, there is a time and a place for cosiness in games. It's nice to chill out sometimes! I also just prefer a bit of friction in a game, something to put the edge on occasionally, even if there is cosiness to be found within it. And according to the lead writer of Nivalis Nights, Thomas Welsh, you can find some of that cosiness, it just isn't a cosy game, and you have to put some work in to get it.
Be warned: Nivalis Nights may not be the cozy game you expect: 'If you want a cozy existence in this city, you're going to have to earn it' It wouldn't be the first cozy game with horrific debts to pay, though. The popular user-added tags for Nivalis Nights on Steam are: Cyberpunk, simulation, life sim, management, and relaxing. It is definitely a cyberpunk shop/life sim, but relaxing? This one was on the wishlists of a lot of cozy gaming fans, including me.
