The top 10 scariest RPGs I've ever played—and one I'm too afraid to try
It's those bloody typewriters all over again. Developer Wych Elm Games' Silver Pines is fantastic in a whole bunch of ways, from its woozy small-town ambience to its mix of taut survival horror and exploratory Metroidvania. But from the very first moment I saw its save system, its please-insert-coin phone box demands, I knew our relationship was going to be a fractious one.

Our Queen's Domain Guide teaches you the basics of the game, teaches you the combat system, explains status effects, tells you how to fast travel, and more! Before we get into the meat of the Queen's Domain Guide and explain the game's mechanics, we'll go over the HUD and what all of the elements mean. Queen's Domain HUD Explanation - Dagger Belt Charges: This shows how many charges you have of your currently equipped throwing weapon. - Luck: We're not 100% sure on this one, but it probably influences things like loot drop rates.
Bethesda reportedly revealing The Elder Scrolls 6 next month, and we may know what its subtitle is going to be Wealth beyond measure, outlander. Bethesda's hugely anticipated and long-awaited fantasy role-playing game The Elder Scrolls 6 could be revealed "as soon as next month", a new report has claimed - right in the midst of Microsoft's ongoing restructuring efforts. Per The Verge, this new Elder Scrolls adventure carries the subtitle "Sentinel", which aligns with fan speculation, and the outlet corroborated prior reports that the game takes place within the Tamriel region of Hammerfell. If the game is revealed next month - presumably The Game Awards in early December is a good place for it - it would mark eight years after The Elder Scrolls 6's initial reveal trailer, and 15 years since the release of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
In 2023, an anonymous modder released one of the best horror games of the decade, and they still haven't broken character MyHouse.wad barrages players with horrible things they've never experienced in a game before. For a lot of people, the appeal of horror is being surprised and disturbed by something they've never seen before. In recent years, I've sourced this rare feeling from movies like Obsession, where the gender dynamics of that story made it feel a bit dangerous, or Speak No Evil, which has one of the most shocking and nihilistic endings that I can recall. I even find that freshness in a modern classic like Pearl, which isn't really scary, but contrasts a technicolour old Hollywood style with a singularly unsettling Mia Goth performance to great effect.
To anyone listening closely to what Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been saying over the past couple of years, this week felt like the clearest sign yet that AI is about to fundamentally change the size of Microsoft’s workforce. Microsoft is now offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India. Microsoft now employs around 223,000 people as of June 30th, 5,000 fewer than the 228,000 people it employed in 2025. Xbox hardware and content and services were also down, but a whole third of Microsoft’s revenue came from Azure ($33.17 billion of the $92.3 billion).
Wendy’s is taking its beef with McDonald’s to a whole new level, releasing a free Final Fantasy-style RPG where players battle fast-food-inspired monsters to save the world. The fast-food giant is entering the world of gaming with WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones, a retro-inspired JRPG featuring turn-based combat, pixel art, and enough food puns to make even the most dedicated dad groan. Developed by 81monkeys, the game puts Wendy’s iconic redheaded mascot in the role of a sword-wielding hero tasked with saving the kingdom of Savoria from an evil organization known as Mech Corp. Perhaps the funniest detail is the game’s description proudly declaring: “WendyQuest is 100% fresh and 100% human-made!” Related Even the PC requirements are a joke.

It's hard to be a fan of D&D and anime on the internet and not have heard about Obojima, a 5e Source Book taking inspiration from 90s aesthetics and classic anime like Studio Ghibli to create a world where you might be purchasing a new cassette tape when a spirit drives by to offer you a Taxi ride. Obojima: Tales From Yatamon delves deeper into the city of Yatamon, detailing city life, places of interest, and new player options for your next whimsical adventure. After building out the greater world of the Island of Obojima in the initial book's release in 2025, fans of the setting can now return. Of the Sub-Class options in Obojima, you can pick from: - Fighter - Neko Duelist - Rogue - Fortune - Warlock - Coven Patron The Neko Duelist is very Obojima-specific in their relation to the cats of the city of Yatamon.
BioWare is dead, and my feelings are a strange cocktail of anger, sadness, and Jack’s Complete Lack of Surprise. The legendary RPG studio was bought by a private investment group earlier this year, and history shows that venture capital frequently kills what it touches, extracting whatever value out of it that it can before moving onto the next victim. Everyone knows Baldur’s Gate now on account of Larian Studios’ Game of the Year-winning, 10 out of 10 Baldur’s Gate 3 from 2023, but what younger gamers might not know is that the first two Baldur’s Gate RPGs were built by BioWare in the late ‘90s. It was the runner-up for IGN’s Best Role-Playing Game of 2002, finishing behind just one game: a little project you might have heard of called The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.
Behind his cheerful delivery and presentation, it turns out that Max Miller, known for turning historical recipes into entertaining yet educational YouTube lessons with his show Tasting History, is also quite serious about board games. Now, game designer Michael Shinall (Marvel Zombies, DCeased, and others) and publisher Salt Games are working with Max to bring him from his kitchen straight to your tabletop with a brand-new worker-placement game based on his popular series, which launched on Kickstarter this week. Recently, we had the chance to sit down with both Max and Michael to hear about how this new adaptation will play, a bit about how it all came to be, and why, whether you are coming at this as a fan of Tasting History or board games, there will be something on this plate you may like. Tasting History: The Board Game The game itself is split into five rounds, with 1-5 players taking turns placing their four chefs at the various spots on the era’s board, and is completed in only about 60-90 minutes.
After talking to Capcom, I'm a lot more optimistic about Onimusha 3 getting a remaster We need time-traveling Jean Reno on PC. Capcom now makes the majority of its money on PC and "expects this ratio to continue increasing," it said in a report earlier this year—a shift that's been in the works ever since 2018's release of Monster Hunter: World sold approximately three trillion copies. These days Capcom releases a healthy mix of new big budget games and remasters from its back catalog that have never been on PC, like Dead Rising and both Onimusha and Onimusha 2. At the end of an interview focused on the series' first new entry in decades, Way of the Sword, I asked Capcom if its sales success has led to new discussions internally about rereleasing 2004's Onimusha 3 or 2006's Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.
I played 20 cozy game demos in Steam Next Fest and these 5 made it onto my wishlist I swear they aren't all farm sims. The full time job of keeping up with cozy games always gets double difficult during the big demo-rama Steam Next Fest Events. It's extra hard this year because yikes there's a lot of AI junk in the store these days. I've waded through hundreds of cozy store pages, dodged the AI disclosures, downloaded 20 demos, and am coming to you with the five cozy games that I'm actually adding to my own wishlist after a busy evening of taste testing.
"This act is intended to demonstrate solidarity with Palestine" - Umurangi Generation studio blocks new game Penguin Colony from being sold in Israel "Developers have the right to control where their games are sold." Origame Digital, the studio behind 2020's critically acclaimed Umurangi Generation, has just released a new game but banned it from being sold in Israel. Penguin Colony is a Lovecraftian horror game experienced through the eyes of a penguin, based on author H.P. Lovecraft's story At the Mountains of Madness. Fellow Traveller, the game's publisher, confirmed that Penguin Colony is not on sale in Israel in a Steam community thread.
World of Warcraft : Forever is riding high thanks to its popular beta and upcoming launch, but retail WoW's Midnight expansion feels like it's in a state of crisis by comparison. The two different versions of WoW couldn't be in more different places. Forever seems to be extremely popular, with Blizzard developers commenting how its beta is breaking records . Its latest content update, patch 12.1.5, went live October 13.
Steam Week in Review: Steam Next Fest has over 8,000 demos, as worthless vibe coded slop levels up All the interesting Steam facts for the week ending October 18. Steam Next Fest, which kicks off tomorrow, currently has 8,011 matches on its press preview landing page. That's roughly double the amount of demos featured in Steam's June 2026 Next Fest. In June 2022, Next Fest boasted just over a thousand demos.
Gameplay footage emerges of reportedly cancelled Assassin's Creed game Destiny Leap of fate. Footage of a reportedly cancelled Assassin's Creed game set in ancient China has emerged online, including stealth kills, the series' leap of faith, and a spinning umbrella weapon. Called Assassin's Creed Destiny, it was reportedly being made for current platforms at Tencent-owned TiMi Studio Group, which also worked on mobile game Assassin's Creed Jade. According to MP1st, the clips were taken from portfolios belonging to people who worked on it, and most come from a prototype built in February 2025.
Spoilers follow for Street Fighter. Put on your gis and gloves, fighting fans, because Street Fighter is now in theaters. The latest attempt to adapt the venerated fighting game franchise for the big screen may not be getting off to the best start with critics, but fans of the series will likely go check it out for themselves. Given how important the Mortal Kombat tournament is to the series mythology, the film couldn’t help but make me and many others feel like Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park: “You do plan on having Mortal Kombat in your Mortal Kombat movie, right?” It didn’t work, and much of the fan backlash to the reboot had to do with the movie excising the tournament and making unwelcome changes to MK lore, like the infamous “Arcana” tattoos that provided champions with special powers.
