Online gambling has been in the news a fair bit recently, with the ease of getting into online sportsbook betting becoming a hotly contested issue in the United States and popular prediction markets being subjected to increased controversy and government scrutiny . It's hardly limited to the United States, however, as illicit online gambling has wide appeal across much of Asia, despite local laws forbidding much of it. To help combat the growing problem, the government has teamed up with one of the most famous figures in global esports, League of Legends prodigy Lee Sang-hyeok, better known by the handle "Faker." As reported by the Seoul Economic Daily , Faker has been made an honorary police officer with the title of Senior Officer. The rationale behind this appointment is that "Lee is an esports player with high recognition at home and abroad and has consistently practiced the values of self-management and restraint throughout his long career, serving as a role model for young people." In this role, Lee will be producing public service announcements, such as videos and posters, to help promote South Korea's Youth Cyber Gambling Voluntary Reporting System, which aims to help youngsters with online gambling problems.
Faker becomes an honorary Korean police officer to help discourage online gambling A year after Riot embraced "betting sponsorships" for League of Legends, the famous esports pro is now an "ambassador for cyber-gambling prevention." Lee Sang-hyeok, better known to his fans as Faker, is perhaps the most enduring and successful esports pro of all time, with—among a great many other honors—a record six League of Legends world championships to his name stretching back to 2013. When he re-signed with T1 in 2022, the team called him the "Unkillable Demon King," and fair enough because he went on to claim three of his six world titles—among a great many more honors—in an undefeated three-year stretch from 2023-25. Time included him in its 2026 list of the most influential people in sports; he's a member of the ESL Esports Hall of Fame and Riot's own LoL Esports Hall of Legends. Those who turn themselves in receive counselling and a "gambling addiction assessment" before being placed in a treatment program; the report says the police plan to grant "maximum leniency" to self-reporting cyber-gamblers, "taking into comprehensive account the gambling amount, degree of remorse, and treatment progress." The World Health Organization reported in 2024 that roughly 5.5% of women and nearly 12% of men globally "experience some level of harm from gambling." In 2025, Riot itself embraced sports betting sponsorships for Tier 1 League of Legends and Valorant teams in the US and EMEA.
Faker has added another unique accolade to his legendary career after the League of Legends icon was appointed as an Honorary Police Officer and Cyber Gambling Prevention Ambassador in South Korea. While he’s best known for dominating the professional League of Legends scene and winning multiple World Championships, Faker is now using his influence away from esports to help tackle youth cyber gambling in his home country. Since making his professional debut in 2013, the T1 mid laner has won six League of Legends World Championships, multiple LCK titles, and became the first inductee into Riot Games’ Hall of Legends, cementing his place as one of esports’ biggest stars. Now, the Korean National Police Agency has appointed Faker as an Honorary Police Officer and Cyber Gambling Prevention Ambassador during a ceremony held at its headquarters in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.
