Romero Games has a new publisher for the game Xbox abandoned, but its 110-person team is now just 16 devs: 'I needed to basically design a new game that could use as much of that stuff as possible' Champions adjust. In a new interview with VGC, FPS legend John Romero revealed how things were going at Romero Games, the studio he leads alongside his wife, veteran designer Brenda Romero. After its unannounced shooter project was canceled by Xbox last year, Romero Games managed to secure a new publisher, but there's a catch: The team is now only a tenth the size it was while funded by Xbox. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.
Grand Theft Auto represents the pinnacle of AAA games, not just in huge-scale production values, but in the kind of innovation that rewrites the rules for what games can even be. It seems only Rockstar is capable of fully nailing this style of game. Scarface: The World Is Yours (2006) Scarface: The World is Yours GTA clones may imitate GTA, but you can also argue that GTA very consciously pastiches popular crime and gangster dramas, such as Vice City's amalgamation of Miami Vice and Scarface. Watch Dogs 2 (2016) Watch Dogs 2 Ubisoft may already specialize in open-world games like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry, but Watch Dogs' contemporary urban setting puts it firmly in the category of GTA clone, though its hacking mechanics also set it apart.

EA reportedly closed BioWare because it was forced to choose between Mass Effect 5 and Star Wars Battlefront 3 And it chose the "less risky, more predictable bet". A new report has revealed that EA closed BioWare because it was forced to choose between investing in one of two sci-fi projects: a new Mass Effect game or a new Star Wars Battlefront game. The revelation comes from Bloomberg, which heard from "people familiar with the company's strategy" that the "recent emergence" of an opportunity to develop a third Battlefront game meant EA - a company saddled with $18bn in debt because of the recent leveraged buyout - would have two sci-fi projects, each likely to cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make. Key Preview Takeaways: - This isn’t a straight retelling of the anime, but it does follow the same overall storyline. - The designers aim to include something in combat for more advanced/experienced players too. - The moments in-between big battles are some of my favorites so far. And then he's going to kind of play the role of Eren and others' mentor, but then they will work together and then they recover from the trauma and grow after.” After playing with the character creator, I’m assigned to the 104th cadets, where I’ll be instructing Eren Jaeger, Armin Arlett, and Mikasa Ackerman, among others.
Like the repeating pattern effect afflicting its warped Manhattan, Control Resonant threw me for a loop. One minute I would be brutally slashing and smashing my way through hordes of inhuman enemies, enacting a never-ending chain combo of bellowing violence with my Aberrant, and the next minute I would be scanning nearby rooftops for signs of a squeaking purple dragon plushie to give to a very wiggly dog (who, I was pretty sure, could teleport). Combat often felt desperate and bloody; knockdown-and-drag-out brawls that had me limping away like John Wick after a particularly messy gunkata affair. Still, these fights all ended eventually, and in their place was not always more action-RPG battling but, more often, an odd sense of melancholic peace and quiet.
In 2023, an anonymous modder released one of the best horror games of the decade, and they still haven't broken character MyHouse.wad barrages players with horrible things they've never experienced in a game before. For a lot of people, the appeal of horror is being surprised and disturbed by something they've never seen before. In recent years, I've sourced this rare feeling from movies like Obsession, where the gender dynamics of that story made it feel a bit dangerous, or Speak No Evil, which has one of the most shocking and nihilistic endings that I can recall. I even find that freshness in a modern classic like Pearl, which isn't really scary, but contrasts a technicolour old Hollywood style with a singularly unsettling Mia Goth performance to great effect.
To anyone listening closely to what Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been saying over the past couple of years, this week felt like the clearest sign yet that AI is about to fundamentally change the size of Microsoft’s workforce. Microsoft is now offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India. Microsoft now employs around 223,000 people as of June 30th, 5,000 fewer than the 228,000 people it employed in 2025. Xbox hardware and content and services were also down, but a whole third of Microsoft’s revenue came from Azure ($33.17 billion of the $92.3 billion).
Modern Warfare 4 arrives at a strange time for the Call of Duty series. Despite being a solid multiplayer shooter, 2025’s Black Ops 7 became the franchise’s lowest-selling game since 2008’s World at War in the US. Activision itself recently admitted that following up 2024’s Black Ops 6 with another Black Ops, after doing the same with Modern Warfare 2 and 3, didn’t offer the variety that fans wanted. Verdict Modern Warfare 4 stands alongside Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare 2 (2009) as one of the most complete Call of Duty titles to date.
James Gunn has clarified DC Studios’ 8-10 year roadmap and confirmed its focus on Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as its “diamond characters.” Gunn shared this information on Threads in response to a now-deleted post, where he urged the original poster to study up on his quotes from January 2023 in regards to what his version of the DCU will end up looking like. “I said some stories would be standalone like the Guardians movies were (which is what Clayface is), and some stories would have part of a larger narrative structure, which is what the Superman Saga is. All that said, each piece of the larger story should work on its own with or without having to see everything else,” he said. He went on to clarify that the “often-cited 8-10 year roadmap” for the DCU doesn’t just apply to story points, but also outlines the plan for “DC as a whole.” This includes focusing on “diamond characters,” which Gunn confirmed are, perhaps unsurprisingly, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, as well as “smaller characters we could turn into diamonds.” These smaller characters were listed as Krypto the Superdog, John Stewart, and Peacemaker.
GOG's getting into publishing in its new, post-CD-Projekt life, and it already has games on the way Good… new games? Cast your mind back to January and you might remember a sit-down we had with some of the leaders of a newly-independent GOG. The DRM-free storefront had separated from its former owner—CD Projekt—and returned to the arms of its original cofounder, Michał Kiciński. But a big reason is that Retrovibe was also cofounded by Kiciński: in our January chat, he noted that he had a 50% stake in the publisher.
Palworld studio still hopes to release the game on Switch 2 one day, despite being in a legal battle with Nintendo A good Pocketpairing. Palworld, the survival crafting game featuring adorable animals seemingly inspired by Pokémon, has been embroiled in a legal battle with Nintendo over what the company alleges is patent infringement. But although the lawsuit is ongoing, Palworld developer Pocketpair still says it's keen to bring the game to Switch 2. Palworld has sold over 30 million copies since its release in 2024, with July's 1.0 update attracting almost 1 million concurrent players on Steam.
Dawn of War 4 may be the most generous RTS I've played Da boyz are back in DoW. Maybe the best way to understand the kind of game Dawn of War 4 wants to be is through a single button. If you're playing a campaign mission in DoW 4 and you're not really feeling it, or you made a silly mistake right at the end and got summarily wiped by the AI, or maybe you're in a hurry and just really curious about what happens next in the story, you have a quietly revolutionary option to hand: you can just hit the 'skip mission' button, and move on. Read this next - Dawn of War 4 gets a release date delay to "further refine the experience ahead of launch" - As Total War: Warhammer 40,000 and Dawn of War 4 show off more gameplay, 40K fans have become locked in a fierce debate: are the lasgun lasers the wrong colour?
Former Halo boss is now in charge of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games Dan Ayoub joined WotC in 2024 and previously served as the company's SVP of digital games. Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games have a new boss, and it's kind of the old boss. Dan Ayoub, who spent the past couple years as senior vice president of digital games at Wizards, has been promoted to the big chair, where he'll head up Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, Duel Masters, and Hasbro Digital Games. Despite going hard on videogames in the immediate aftermath of Baldur's Gate 3, Hasbro has struggled to actually follow up on it: The company recorded a $56 million non-cash impairment earlier this year arising from the cancellation of several games in development that were expected to release "in 2028 and beyond." Potentially complicating matters further, Cocks, the Hasbro CEO, is a vocal AI enthusiast.
The 1993 first-person shooter Doom is legendary. Its place in history is both untouchable and inarguable. It started with Petersen posting a thread titled, "How Doom changed the world." He discussed his history in the video game industry prior to getting hired at id Software to work on Doom – specifically on a real-time strategy game released in 1990 called Command HQ, and how designer Danielle Bunten Berry "thought that since 65% of gamers had modems it would mostly be played head-to-head. For my part, Doom is one of my favorite games of all time, and I was fortunate to get to check off a personal and career Bucket List item by playing through the entire legendary first episode of Doom (called "Knee-Deep in the Dead") in co-op with Romero to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2013.

If last week's mysterious Mass Effect: Universe trailer leak wasn't painful enough for you in the wake of BioWare's sudden closure , we've gotten yet another taste of The Game That Could Have Been, this time courtesy of award-winning video game composer Austin Wintory. Known for his beautiful and haunting soundtracks for games like Flow, Journey, ABZÛ , Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Sword of The Sea , John Wick Hex, and Hades II , Wintory was also evidently working on the Mass Effect: Universe soundtrack. From the sounds of things, EA and the now-defunct BioWare were considering having Wintory produce the game's OST. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBO8s_McKjU "In 2007, when the credits rolled on my first playthrough of Mass Effect, I remember calling a friend and saying, 'I can't believe I already know this will be among my favorite all-time games.' Usually, it takes the passage of time before we can be so sure something truly belongs to the ages, but in this case, the confidence was instantaneous," Wintory wrote.
Mass Effect Universe "looked incredible" says creator who claims he advised BioWare "And now we may never get to play it." A content creator who claims to have served on a BioWare community council has shared alleged details about the cancelled next Mass Effect game, titled Mass Effect Universe. In a lengthy Twitter/X post (thanks, PC Gamer), YouTuber Dantics claimed the cancelled game was set more than 600 years after the Reaper War. • Set 600+ years after the Reaper War • You play as a customizable N7… pic.twitter.com/69b1HP1wm9 They would also have had experimental technology implanted, giving them the ability to hack and manipulate the environment, see through walls, identify systems, and remotely trigger hazards. The EA job cuts, which took place only a few months after Saudi Arabia's $55bn leveraged buyout of the company, also hit developers at Respawn, Maxis, Full Circle, EA Motive, and other EA-owned studios.
