AI-powered game development is 'leading to an explosion of content,' Roblox says, as it brags about 70,000 games published on its platform in the last 5 months alone Two days after Steam admitted it has an AI slop problem, Roblox basically bragged about the same thing. Now we have Roblox, speaking from the other side of that coin in its Q3 2026 shareholder letter, in which it bragged that the July release of Build, its AI-powered "prompt-to-game creation tool," users have published more than 70,000 games. Since its alpha launch in New Zealand, Singapore, Serbia and Thailand, more than 500,000 users have used Build—and have published over 70,000 games." Take a moment to think about that: Build launched in July, five months ago, which means we're looking at a rough average of 14,000 games per month. To further capitalize on that, Roblox has kicked off two new initiatives: Roblox Everywhere, revealed in September as a way to make Roblox games playable outside of the Roblox platform, and the Universal Player, which is basically the reverse of that: "AI is used to seamlessly import any existing game into the Roblox cloud platform while transforming it to run multiplayer, on any device (at the upper edge of the device's performance capabilities), with instant join, instant UGC updates, local 3D, and access to Roblox services for discovery, safety, communication, and monetization." That's interesting: Details are scant but the idea seems to be to make Roblox a platform for all game developers, akin to Steam, GOG, or the PlayStation Store, with minimal fuss or muss: Just make your game, then zippity-pow it through the AI machine, and suddenly you've got a full-on Roblox game and access to a massive audience that previously would've been much more of a headache to reach.

Rockstar developer union could end up over 1,600 workers strong and encompass nearly all UK staff below senior management, IWGB claim Organisers say a successful vote would create "the biggest recognised union in the UK games sector" As we've previously covered, a vote on recognition of a union made up of UK-based Rockstar Games devs is set to take place around GTA 6's console launch on November 19th. The Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) union, whom the Rockstar staff are working with in their efforts to organise, have now revealed just how many workers the Rockstar could end up encompassing if the recognition vote is successful. As reported by Game File, when asked to put a number on their claim that the vote could result in "the biggest recognised union in the UK games sector", the IWGB said that the union’s bargaining unit would be made up of more than 1,600 workers. 'None of these people have ever made a game,' BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk says of game industry executives: 'They just don't know how it works' In a rare interview, Zeschuk said the closure of BioWare is sad, but his greater concern is for the people put out of work. It's been almost 15 years since BioWare co-founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka announced their retirements from the videogame industry, and they've been resolute about staying out of it ever since: Muzyka continues to head up the ThresholdImpact investment firm he founded in 2012 and holds multiple roles at the University of Alberta, while Zeschuk owns Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company, also based in Alberta, where he works with a small handful of other BioWare veterans. But Zeschuk stepped back into the videogame spotlight, briefly, following last week's closure of BioWare by parent company Electronic Arts, telling 80lv that he got the news hours after it happened because he was on a fishing trip, and by the time he flew home a couple days later, he'd "already shelved it away." "I wasn't there to share in the moment, which in some ways was nice because I was able to kind of just take my time with it," Zeschuk said. Having gone through the crucible of game development, I'm not going back in there." 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80.
'AAA publishers are abusing early access,' Denis Dyack says, and that's making things harder for everyone else Dyack believes that games like Subnautica 2 are "skewing player expectations" for early access games. "AAA publishers are abusing early access, skewing player expectations in such a way that it heavily disadvantages smaller independent developers." Denis Dyack, known for his work on games including Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, says big game developers are "abusing early access" by using it as a marketing tool for highly polished games that are ready for full release anyway. Ethan McKinnon, who joined Deadhaus Sonata developer Apocalypse Studios as creative director after the game's rough early access launch earlier this year, added that "players naturally compare everything in the same marketplace, so smaller teams are being held to a much higher standard than they were in the past." Interestingly, Subnautica 2 creative director Anthony Gallegos seemed to agree with at least part of Dyack's proposition, saying in the same report that early access is "not a few edge-case games participating anymore." "Early access could mean a game like ours doing long-term open development, or it could be a game three months from a 1.0 release that's effectively doing a paid beta soft launch and using the Early Access term as a way to soften player expectations," Gallegos said. In a lot of ways, we were too focused on what made our game so different and unique that it took our attention away from making sure we got the basics done right." McKinnon put it more simply: "Developers need to treat early access like a real launch, because players do." 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80.
Years ago, Indieszero and Nintendo made this amazing GBA game called Sakura Momoko no Ukiuki Carnival. In it, our goal was to prepare a carnival for Colortown, inviting the people who lived there to it and getting the blessing from the gods to ensure a good time is had by all. It never got localized, which is a tragedy. However, Gingham Games, Melos Han-Tani, Mogumu, and Sandy Powder’s Danchi Days features that same sort of spirit and neighbor-collecting initiative in the hopes of once again holding a happy summer festival.
Any reminder of Red Dead Redemption 2 's temperature sensitive horse testicles brings a smile to my face. In truth, I can't say I've ever zoomed in close enough to properly take in the spectacle of Arthur Morgan's mount having its nuts dynamically expand and contract based on whether he's riding through snowy mountains or across baking plains, but I do always get a kick out of knowing such a thing's happening as I play. To this point, the horse balls have been the most infamous or meme-worthy example of Rockstar's obsession with going all-in on realistic detail to an arguably unnecessary degree, one that borders on overindulgence which players could conceivably never notice if they weren't expressly told about it. That philosophy's gone nowhere, so GTA 6 was always going to have a feature that'd become as much of a metaphor for excess as those beloved balls.
Epic Games chief Tim Sweeney claims 'Valve has held gaming back for years' Sweeney says locking developers into the "walled garden" of Steamworks is a real problem. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney dropped another hot take about Steam earlier this week, saying that Valve's online storefront "has held gaming back for years" by locking developers into Steamworks. Sweeney's comment came amidst a conversation started by Kiaran Ritchie, a former principal animation programmer at Epic, who decried the 30% cut Valve takes from game sales on Steam. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80.
Witchbrook is delayed again, now set for release in 2027 We finally have a solid launch date, and it's not in 2026 as planned but it's not too far off, either. One year after the cozy witch-life sim Witchbrook was delayed from 2025 to 2026, it's happened again, as the game is now slated to come out in 2027. The good news is that unlike that previous delay, this one comes with a solid release date, and it's not too far off: The game is now slated to come out on January 28, 2027. We hope you’ll enjoy immersing yourself in our magical pixel art world as much as we’ve enjoyed making it." It's been a long road for Witchbrook, which we first covered back in 2017, before it even had a title: Chucklefish merely teased it as "something like Stardew Valley meets Harry Potter." In 2020, Chucklefish unveiled a dramatically overhauled visual style, and five years after that we finally got a release window, which didn't really work out.
Valve admits Steam has an AI slop and cloning problem, but says 'we don't want to be gatekeepers telling developers which tools they should or shouldn't use' Steam Next Fest is being flooded with thousands of low-effort games, while developers are becoming reluctant to share their work for fear of seeing it quickly cloned. The rise of AI slop is a real problem for Steam. Developers are growing wary of sharing their concepts and demos for fear of them being cloned, while Next Fest events meant to showcase upcoming games are being choked by literally thousands of demos hastily cranked out by 'developers' who are throwing everything imaginable at the wall in hopes that something will stick. Speaking at the Steam Indie Connect event in Busan, South Korea, Valve's Tom Giardino and Marc Wilkinson acknowledged the problem, which as reported by Inven Global included at least one instance of a developer reporting extortion threats: "If you don't pay, we'll clone your game with AI and release it first." But the pair suggested that Valve isn't really in a position to do much about it, at least as far as regulating what is and isn't allowed on the platform.

GOG's getting into publishing in its new, post-CD-Projekt life, and it already has games on the way Good… new games? Cast your mind back to January and you might remember a sit-down we had with some of the leaders of a newly-independent GOG. The DRM-free storefront had separated from its former owner—CD Projekt—and returned to the arms of its original cofounder, Michał Kiciński. But a big reason is that Retrovibe was also cofounded by Kiciński: in our January chat, he noted that he had a 50% stake in the publisher.

Former Halo boss is now in charge of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games Dan Ayoub joined WotC in 2024 and previously served as the company's SVP of digital games. Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games have a new boss, and it's kind of the old boss. Dan Ayoub, who spent the past couple years as senior vice president of digital games at Wizards, has been promoted to the big chair, where he'll head up Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, Duel Masters, and Hasbro Digital Games. Despite going hard on videogames in the immediate aftermath of Baldur's Gate 3, Hasbro has struggled to actually follow up on it: The company recorded a $56 million non-cash impairment earlier this year arising from the cancellation of several games in development that were expected to release "in 2028 and beyond." Potentially complicating matters further, Cocks, the Hasbro CEO, is a vocal AI enthusiast.
