Modern Warfare 4 arrives at a strange time for the Call of Duty series. Despite being a solid multiplayer shooter, 2025’s Black Ops 7 became the franchise’s lowest-selling game since 2008’s World at War in the US. Activision itself recently admitted that following up 2024’s Black Ops 6 with another Black Ops, after doing the same with Modern Warfare 2 and 3, didn’t offer the variety that fans wanted. Verdict Modern Warfare 4 stands alongside Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare 2 (2009) as one of the most complete Call of Duty titles to date.
Over the three decades of its existence, BioWare rightfully earned the reputation of a legendary role-playing game studio. The news of its closing understandably has fans in mourning, and we’re left reminiscing about game franchises like Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. But every studio has at least one oddity within its gameography, and the clear outlier for BioWare has to be Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. These back-to-back games, shouldered by Treyarch, Sledgehammer, and Raven, had cracks and compromises that suggested the Call of Duty machine just can't keep up with both "good" and "fast" anymore.
