The top 10 scariest RPGs I've ever played—and one I'm too afraid to try
As both a woman and complete and utter nerd, nothing makes me giddier than when those two core facets of my personality come together in an inspired way. Such is the case of Mooncat's Death Note collaboration, which sees the manga-turned-anime-turned-live-action-film adapted into something a bit different: nail polish. Each polish runs between $17-18, and a magnetic wand--which assists in the application of magnetic polishes and making cat-eye effects--can be added to your cart for free with any purchase. The collector's box set retails for $139--about $20 less than if you were to buy each polish individually--and comes with an exclusive sticker set and magnetic wand.

Baldur's Gate 3 custom campaign mod channels World of Warcraft with an adventure about undead former slaves fighting to reclaim a kingdom From the creator of the Act Two Expansion mod which came out in September The opening act of a Baldur's Gate 3 custom campaign mod which injects an adventure set in the World of Warcraft universe into Larian's RPG has been released. The mod, Forsaken, is another ambitious bit of work from a modder who recently expanded the second act of BG3's main story with a new region to explore before you head into the final chapter. This time, they've abandoned the D&Dverse for a tale of undead slaves rising up after being freed from serving a Lich King. Over the three decades of its existence, BioWare rightfully earned the reputation of a legendary role-playing game studio. The news of its closing understandably has fans in mourning, and we’re left reminiscing about game franchises like Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. But every studio has at least one oddity within its gameography, and the clear outlier for BioWare has to be Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. And it wasn’t some small, side project for BioWare; the studio assembled a team of 30 developers, led by director Mark Darrah , who also directed the first two Dragon Age games, and writer Jay Turner, who wrote for Mass Effect 2 and 3.

Silent Hill 2 Best For: Old-school horror hounds Release date: September 25, 2001 Few games feel as emblematic of the PS2 as Silent Hill 2. Spider-Man 2 Best for: Classic superhero antics Release date: June 28, 2004 Don't shoot the messenger – I know Spider-Man 2 is one of the most beloved PS2 games of the early '00s, but I don't rate it quite as highly as some others might. James Bond 007: Nightfire Best for: Competitive FPS coach co-op Release date: November 18, 2002 There was only ever going to be one front-runner for my favorite PS2 game that still runs like a dream in 2026, and that crown goes to 007 Nightfire.
Bringing From Software's Elden Ring to life on the big screen is no small feat, and it won't be cheap. A new report claims the upcoming Alex Garland-directed film has a whopping budget of nearly $200 million, making it the most expensive movie distributor A24 has ever financed. The Wall Street Journal reported the figure, and if true, Elden Ring's budget will eclipse A24's most expensive movie to date, the $70 million Marty Supreme. Movies are typically expected to make double their production budgets to be considered box office hits, and in the case of Mary Supreme, that flick has a lifetime global gross of $96 million, well below the $140 million it would have needed to be a success story.
Overshadowed by October's biggest releases. October has been a pretty spectacular month for videogame bangers. It started with the likes of Ace Combat 8 , Star Wars: Galactic Racer , Silver Pines , and my personal GOTY, Gears of War: E-Day launching within the space of nine days. And that’s before we get to Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen , Castlevania: Belmont's Curse , Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 .
BioWare's incredible legacy will continue as long as there are RPGs EA is shutting down the venerable studio, but its impact will persevere. For my column this week I was going to write about climbing all over monsters in Dragon Dogma 2's chilly Dark Arisen expansion, but then EA decided to finally murder BioWare after years of slowly poisoning it. So sadly I am pivoting to this eulogy. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Fraser is the UK online editor and has actually met The Internet in person.
Kirby has always been one of Nintendo's more consistently successful franchises. While the little pink puffball never had anything remotely resembling a 'dark era' like many other Nintendo series, there was a time around the turn of the century where Kirby began to spin his wheelies a bit. After the 2000 release of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards , developer HAL Laboratory immediately began work on Kirby’s next big adventure. Glimmers of a mainline Kirby title for the GameCube featuring the return of the helper system from Kirby Super Star with four-player co-op popped up in various circles over the years, including E3 2005, but a full-on game never materialised.
'I'm forever grateful to BioWare': 16 game developers share the moment a BioWare game inspired them to join the industry BioWare was the catalyst for a generation of game development careers. When my party approached Redcliffe Village in Dragon Age: Origins, my reluctant sidekick Alistair stopped the party for a big confession about a secret he'd been keeping from me. I finally realized how massive and complex the story was, how many contingencies had been planned, written, and voice acted. In what seemed to be an inevitability, Electronic Arts announced the closure of BioWare this week, including the cancellation of its current project, a future iteration in the Mass Effect series. The writing has been on the wall for some time, and EA's recent sale to Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) sealed its fate. Much can (and should) be said about BioWare's ability to create fully realized, original worlds like those of Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic The creators of Knights of the Old Republic had the vision to set it in a new era of Star Wars, thousands of years before the events of the original movie, separating its story from the main continuity of films that has become a crutch for lots of modern Star Wars stories both in and outside of games.
BioWare is dead, and my feelings are a strange cocktail of anger, sadness, and Jack’s Complete Lack of Surprise. The legendary RPG studio was bought by a private investment group earlier this year, and history shows that venture capital frequently kills what it touches, extracting whatever value out of it that it can before moving onto the next victim. Everyone knows Baldur’s Gate now on account of Larian Studios’ Game of the Year-winning, 10 out of 10 Baldur’s Gate 3 from 2023, but what younger gamers might not know is that the first two Baldur’s Gate RPGs were built by BioWare in the late ‘90s. It was the runner-up for IGN’s Best Role-Playing Game of 2002, finishing behind just one game: a little project you might have heard of called The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.
Dawn of War 4 clearly loves the Warhammer 40K strategy games that came before, but it misses that they loved to reinvent themselves Retreading hallowed ground I may have set my expectations for Dawn of War 4 too high, but it's a series that, to my mind, never retreads the same ground. It's therefore been disappointing to feel, having played it across two its campaigns that this long-awaited sequel may have taken too few risks - or been too reverent of the games that came before. Back in the hands of Relic Entertainment, the original Dawn of War was closest to a traditional RTS game.
